Exclusivity

An oft-lamented yet seemingly essential aspect to differentiate between various platforms, exclusive games often determine which system we buy and which we don't. Whilst many titles will make the jump to other systems over time - Ori and the Blind Forest recently made the jump to Switch, for example, and the Epic Games Store has (to the dismay of many) been paying for timed exclusive video games to separate itself from the competition - there are many that will often remain on only a single platform.

How do you feel about exclusive games? Are there any on one system that you wish were on another? Have you ever bought a console just for one or two exclusives?

it's wishful thinking but i kinda wish that, if not for the PS4/PS5, then i'd wish Monolith would at the very least remaster the old Xenosaga games on the Switch. :s sadly, these are old gems that are only exclusively on the PS2 of all things, never to see the light of day of a modern console. @__@

Exclusivity is both irritating and dumb. It would make sense for console companies to do it if they developed their own games, as it would force people to buy their console if they wanted to play a certain game, but they generally don't. I have no idea why game developers do this because it limits potential profit by narrowing the pool of those who can buy the game.

I definitely wish more games were available to PC. From how I understand it, they can theoretically run and release certain games on PC, since it's where these games spend most of their time in development. I could be wrong, though.

For series in particular that I wish made the jump, Kingdom Hearts is probably my top one. The Nintendo Switch deserved at least the ones it could handle, like KH 1.5 and 2.5. Especially since CoM, Days, Re:coded, and Dream Drop Distance, all on Nintendo consoles, helped keep the franchise alive.

It's funny you say this. I always feel like PC has by far the widest catalogue of games thanks to Steam/Epic and probably the most overlap as a result.

PC definitely gets the most games out of any platform, but that's mostly because Steam has absolutely no quality control whatsoever. In terms of major releases there is usually a delay in getting them to PC if they're not scheduled to be released same day with consoles, but when you consider two major Playstation 4 titles - Red Dead Redemption 2 and Death Stranding - have made it to PC (or will, in the case of the latter) it shows a pretty prominent shift in attitude towards PC gaming generally. PC has the advantage of emulation as well, which kinda nulls the exclusivity factor...well, eventually. I'm not sure how we're doing with current generation emulation.

PC is kinda problematic though, because there is an exclusivity split on the platform itself, with the Epic Games Store buying up anything that looks even remotely promising if they can, and developers like EA creating their own storefronts. The versatility of the platform is actually working against it, kinda - you have one system, but you may need various clients to play what you want to play. It's better than a single store owning a monopoly, or needing a new client for every single developer, but...god, does it show the disadvantages of digital gaming pretty clearly, in my opinion.

Exclusivity sucks big time, but it's a big way in which people want to sell their consoles. PC having the most games out of any platform isn't too suprising considering PC has been around for ages whereas with consoles to keep up with hardware and advancements in what can be possible in games, they need to build a whole new console whereas with PC it's just replace hardware and we're golden without the need of a PC 2.0 (though not cheap in any way either).

About the internal struggles within PC and it's storefronts, there have been rumors that EA does return to Steam, though you still need Origin to play these games, much like how Ubisoft's Uplay works. Epic Games however is another story in and of itself that is for another topic.

I feel though as if exclusivity is slowly dying off, with Halo coming to Steam, RDR2 and Death Stranding as Dawn mentioned moving to the PC platform (or have moved), etc.

I mean, if there was no exclusivity, what would be the point in having different consoles? I chose PS4 over Xbox for exclusive reasons. Although a lot of stuff is now moving to different platforms, I am truly grateful and appreciative for some exclusives. Like sure - sometimes it's sucks when I see a game come out for Xbox that I think seems pretty awesome but wont be coming to PS4. But then I guess I'll just have to buy an Xbox if I want to play it that badly, and that's how they get ya. Hahaha

The only thing I wish would happen more often when titles are on multiple platforms is the ability to play CROSS PLATFORM. I will say I'm starting to get tired of buying the same game twice on different platforms just to play with different friends. One reason why I have been such a huge fan of Final Fantasy 14.

Cross platform would be such a big thing to have, and well with how things are progressing, one would be correct to think that that already should have been a thing were it not for certain companies being against it just so they get more green potentially.

Yeah, cross platform would be AWESOME for so many games. Example - You can pretty much play Diablo 3 on everything. But it would super cool if you just chose the platform you felt most comfortable playing on, but still play with all of your friends who chose to go a different route. Monster Hunter World would be another one that would serve as a great game for Cross Platform.

Destiny 2 comes to mind to me, almost had a thought that would go cross-play but ended up just being cross-save :(

Provided they actually give consoles mouse/keyboard support, then D2 should definitely be crossplay. If they don't though, then they need to stay seperate.

I play Final Fantasy 14 from my PS4 with mouse/keyboard from time to time. So the possibility is there, it's just not always the case for all games. :3

Same, it's 100% on the actual game's devs to do it. The fact that it isn't pretty much universal boggles my mind.

It does not. You can use third-party tools to trick your console into accepting KBM inputs, but that is very not legit. The game itself does not have native KBM support on consoles, only on PC.
