What is Mafia?
Mafia is a game of love, betrayal, and murder. Kind of. Normally there's two factions: the innocent, uninformed majority and the murderous, informed minority, and sometimes some unaffiliated roles. In this game, the main factions are the Arxians, who are the Innocents; the Shepherds, who are the Mafia faction; and five Unaffiliated roles. It is the primary goal of each faction to wipe out the others and come out victorious.

The game is played in two phases: a cycle of Day and Night. During the Day phase, all players will deliberate among themselves to decide on who to burn, in attempts to wipe out the Shepherds and Unaffiliated roles. Of course, it would be too simple if these factions weren't present in the discussion under the guise of innocence, so Arxians will have to be wary of all of their fellow players. During the Night phase, the thread will be "locked" and the mafia faction will deliberate among themselves and decide on one player to kill. Their choice will be revealed at the beginning of each Day phase. Certain roles also have Night actions, which can be activated by sending a Private Message to me during the Night phase. When a competitor is killed, their alignment, but not their role, will be revealed.

This game also contains a "Whispering" mechanic. Whispers are private messages that may be sent to other players in the game. However, there is a chance that these messages may be Overheard by the other players, publicly revealing what was said in the Whisper. These chances rise the longer a Whisper message is, and with each successive Whisper that is sent by a player during a single phase. Similarly, there are also Notes in this game, which are essentially the same thing as Whispers, but are sent during the Night Phase instead. Notes cannot be overheard by other players, but any player that visits a player that receives a note will also see that note, and may or may not interfere with it.

Another important mechanic to note is that of Last Wills. Wills are short messages that are shared publicly after a player has died. Wills may be no longer than one hundred characters in length, and should be sent to the Game Master directly via Private Message. Players may only write Wills during the Night Phase.

Finally, if a player fails to meet a certain quota of posts, they may become Suspicious. This quota is dependent upon how many players are currently alive in the game, and how many total posts are made each day. Suspicious players are more susceptible to being Burned during the Day Phase.

Roles will be assigned at random at the start of the game, and the game will commence once all roles have been sent out.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me by PM or VM.

Introduction

The stars shone brightly on the meticulously up-kept cobbles of Arxium tonight. It was a night not unlike any other of these past few years; a gentle breeze blew through, faintly shaking the lanterns that cast a warm, orange glow across the shadowed streets upon which one could not go two minutes without passing another soul wandering the darkness. Faint torchlight crackled in the few windows that had yet to go dark, some of which seemed to never go dark. There was always something happening in the capital of the Empire, even if it was not always pronounced enough to be noticed.

But something was amiss. The typically cool air felt frigid, and its shadows moved in a most unsettling manner. The normally welcoming atmosphere had been perturbed by something sinister.

Little Bo-Peep moved gracefully through the streets, crook in hand. She gave curt nods and faint smiles to anyone and everyone she passed, leaving them none the wiser to her true ambitions.

On the other side of the city, Moses strode past earthen homes and their everyday inhabitants. He knew that tonight was the night. He could feel it. He could finally begin carrying out the Lord's Will once again, cleansing this city of its filth as His harbinger.

Something was drawing evil to the city. More than had been hiding beneath its surface for decades. Tonight marked the beginning of the end for Arxium. No matter who came out on top, the city would never be the same after tonight.

Was Arxium prepared to fight off the terrors that now plagued it?

= Canine role, affected by the Dog Whisperer
= Bird role, affected by certain events

The Queen
The beloved ruler of Arxium. As she has final say in all matters, she can override the target of a burning once in the game, either switching it to another person or canceling it altogether. Should anything happen to her darling son, the Prince, she will not rest until those that brought him harm pay the ultimate price. Should she herself be killed, the entirety of Arxium will be in mourning for the next day, skipping the day phase completely.
The Prince
The adored son of her majesty the Queen, and heir to the throne of Arxium. He's naught more than a child and is practically defenseless, save for his guardian, Baldassare, but he is likewise a threat to no one. So long as Baldassare lives, anyone that targets the Prince will be killed, and their action nullified. Should the Prince be selected as the target of a burning, his role will be publicly revealed and the execution will be canceled.
Baldassare
The vampiric guardian of the royal family, and the Queen's trusted adviser. His word is valued greatly by both her majesty and the people of Arxium, so his votes are always counted for twice the normal amount. As the Prince's vigilant protector, he will slay anyone who visits the young boy during the night, without exception. The rest of his role is a Secret.
Kharis
Sister to the royal adviser, Baldassare. She and her lover were the only two beyond Naku and Zami to survive the journey to Arxium from Haven, thanks to the interference of Baldassare. Her only loyalties are to her lover and her brother. Should her brother be killed, she and her lover will go rogue, owing loyalty only to themselves, as well as whoever else she deigns to make into her pawns from that point on. Should her lover, The Banshee, be killed, she will end her own life out of grief. She will always know the identity of the Banshee and Baldassare, but Baldassare will not know her identity.
The Banshee
A heraldic spirit of death, and lover to Kharis. Should anyone visit her during the night, she will cry out, revealing their identities publicly. Should her lover die, she will end her own life out of grief. She will always know the identity of Kharis.
Hansel
The boy who once was lured into a Witch's trap and nearly consumed by her, but a boy no longer. Now he is a man grown, and, alongside his twin sister, Gretel, he serves as a lawkeeper of Arxium. Each night he can fashion a one-shot pistol to give to another player, with the exception of Gretel, which may be used during any subsequent day phase to kill another player, with a fifty percent chance of revealing the shooter. Should he be subject to execution, he will use his own pistol to kill one other player of his choosing right before his death. So long as he and Gretel are both still alive, they may recruit another Arxian as an apprentice each night. Should Gretel die before him, he will gain the ability to hand out two of either a pistol, a magical ward, or a magic crystal, but only one of each.
Gretel
Now a powerful young woman, she is most well known for being nearly killed by a cannibalistic Witch alongside her twin brother, Hansel. Now the two serve as lawkeepers of Arxium. Each night, Gretel can investigate another player, learning their true motivations. So long as both she and Hansel are alive, they may recruit another Arxian to be their apprentice each night. Should Hansel perish before her, she will gain the ability to learn the true name of another player each night, as well as to carry out the law's judgment on her own once every night.
The Valkyrie
A female spirit of Valhalla, and chooser of the slain. So long as the Valkyrie lives, only one player may die each night, maximum. Should more than one player be destined for death, the Valkyrie will choose one of these souls to usher to the next world. Once she has carried five souls to Valhalla, she will attain an independent victory and return to her home among the gods.
The Sandman
The man responsible for the dreams of all. Each night he may visit another player and dust their eyes with sand. When they awaken, they will recall a dream that either showed a single, innocent person, or three people, among which one is an enemy. Should anyone else visit The Sandman's target during the same night, however, the dream will be disturbed and the dreamer will not recall it when they awake.
Calliope
A beautiful woman who has inspired art throughout the ages. As one of the Muses, she may approach another individual every other night, fueling their creativity. Anyone she visits will be forced to speak through art or verse for two days. If their soul is pure, they will be left alone after these two days. If they are a person of malice, Calliope will consume them at the end of the second day.
The Dragonkeeper
A brave soul with power over dragonkind. So long as he remains alive, all of Arxium's dragons will remain in captivity, and players with dragon roles will not know which dragon they are nor will they know their abilities. Dragon players' day votes will also be nullified; instead, their votes will be added to the Dragonkeeper's. As there are seven dragons, the Dragonkeeper will begin with his vote counting as eight votes, but his vote value will go down every time a dragon is killed. If the Dragonkeeper is killed, the dragons will be released and will gain control over their roles. Passive dragon abilities will always be active, despite dragon players not knowing their role.
The Wyrm
A dragon of classical western mythology, renowned for inflicting the infamous dragon sickness. Anyone who visits him will be driven mad. Once during the game, he may burn another player with his fire breath, instantly killing them. However, if he kills an innocent, his day vote will be permanently negated. He will be revealed when he uses his fire breath.
The Phoenix
A beautiful bird dragon known for its ability to rise from the dead. Each night, she may visit another player, protecting them from death and preventing them from being converted.
The Gargouille
A great dragon with the power to flood the land. Once during the game, she may cause flood conditions, during which time she will be immune to all night kills.
The Dragon Turtle
A wise creature of legend. Twice during the game, he may withdraw into his shell, becoming immune to all actions for that night.
The Hydra
A beast feared for its ability to grow two heads whenever one is cut off. His abilities are a Secret.
The Cockatrice
A serpentine bird with a look that can kill, much like its cousin, the basilisk. His abilities are a Secret.
The Wyvern
A two-legged dragon with frigid breath. Every other night, she may freeze another player solid. Frozen players are unable to do anything until they thaw at the end of the second day phase after being targeted. During blooming conditions, a target only remains frozen for a single day phase. During flood conditions, they remain frozen for three day phases.
The Mermaid
A beautiful siren skilled in the arts of healing magic. Each night she can visit another player, curing their madness. If she targets The Gingerbread Man, she will render him harmless for the rest of the game.
The Dog Whisperer
A man skilled with the training of animals. He has control over the city's kennel. Each night, he chooses one of his dogs to release, for that night only. If he is killed, all of the hounds will be released permanently.
The Teumessian Fox
A legendary fox that is said to be impossible to capture. He is immune to all forms of death, with one exception: if he is targeted by Laelaps, a paradox will ensue, and both creatures will be turned to stone.
Laelaps
The golden hound of legend that is said to never fail to catch what she's hunting. Each night she may set out to track another player, learning any and all movements that they make during that night. If she targets another animal legend, she will kill it. If she targets the Teumessian Fox, however, a paradox will ensue and both creatures will be turned to stone.
Cù-Sìth
A hound feared as a harbinger of death. Each night, he will bay, and five selected players will hear the sound of his bark. If any of these five players dies, he may bay again. Three successful predictions will yield a solo victory. Cù-Sìth's targets will die even if "saved" by the Valkyrie.
The Unicorn
A wondrous horned horse of great renown. Each night he may choose another player to save from death, but he will also roleblock that player in the process, preventing them from performing any actions that night.
The Thunderbird
A majestic winged creature of power. Each night she may visit another player and supercharge them, strengthening their action during that night. This boost is chain reactive, and anyone who visits the supercharged player, or anyone that the supercharged player visits, will also have their action strengthened. The shock of the charge has a fifty percent chance of killing water dwellers, however.
The Tanuki
A sly creature once revered as a deity. He loves to change his shape and make others appear foolish, with disguises said to top even those of a Kitsune. Each night he will shape shift, becoming another role at random while retaining his alignment. He will never become the same role twice. During the day, he may send out public, anonymous messages for everyone to hear.
The Kappa
A river-dwelling yōkai that is often said to lure people into the water and drown them. If the Kappa is targeted by a killing action, he will instead turn against his brethren and join the side of his attackers.
The Pixie
A mischievous, playful little creature that likes to interfere in everyone else's business. Each day she selects two players who she shall make a meal for. During the following night, those two players will enter into an anonymous chat with one another, during which they will learn each other's roles, but not their identities.
The Sylph
An elusive spirit of the air. The Sylph is immune to being converted, and will learn the identity of anyone who attempts to convert them during the night after said attempt.
The White Stag
A beautiful beast known to be a messenger of the otherworld. Each night he may visit a dead player, learning their role and initiating a temporary chat with them. The chat will only last for the duration of the night phase; if the other player does not respond, then the communion simply fails. The same player may not be visited twice, regardless of whether or not the communion was successful.
The Ichneumon
An ancient enemy of all dragonkind. If any dragon should target the Ichneumon, she will slay the dragon instantly. She is immune to all dragon actions.
The Pygmy
A small faeries notorious for constant inebriation. He may visit another player each night, pestering them and preventing them from performing any actions.
The Firebird
A radiant bird with mystical plumage. Each night he may give one of his feathers to another player. Upon dying, all of the Firebird's feathers will fall, granting one each to a proportion of the remaining players at random. His feathers are so radiant, albeit only to those that truly love beauty, that any Arxian who visits him will instantly learn his identity. Additionally, he may sing once in the game, bringing all of Arxium into bloom.
The Dryad
A lovely tree spirit in mortal form. Once during the game, she may choose to merge with the tree that she is bound to. When she does, she will become unable to vote during the day phase, but she will become immune to most actions and will remain free to converse in the thread. Her role will also be publicly revealed at this time.
Little Bo-Peep
A young, innocent woman who wishes only to attend to her flock. That's how she appears, at least. Using her mystical crook, she has the ability to take control of the will of other beings. Each night, she may select another player who made an identical vote to her own during the preceding day phase, permanently gaining influence over who they vote for. She may only do this to players that voted before her. Additionally, she may target another member of her Flock each night, allowing them to appear as a member of Arxium should anyone look into them.
Moses
A charming, pious man made famous by the great feats he once performed in the name of his God. He claims to have been sent to Arxium as an emissary of God, tasked with cleansing it. Each night he may select another player who made an identical vote to his own during the preceding day phase, permanently gaining influence over who they vote for. He may only do this to players that voted after him. Additionally, he has the ability to override one burning during the game, turning it onto a player of his choice.
The Baku
A creature famous for its ability to devour nightmares. This particular baku has a habit of taking dreams and replacing them with fabricated prophecies, "revealing" some rather false information. If she manages to eat the dream of someone that the Sandman targets in the same night, she will become immune to all actions and forms of death for two day and night phases.
The Sphinx
A lioness with the head of a person who thoroughly enjoys her riddles. Each night she presents a single player with a riddle of her own making. That player will be trapped and unable to speak during the following day phase, and if they fail to solve the riddle before the next nightfall, they will be killed.
The Imp
A chaotic, mischievous little creature that often interferes in the affairs of others. Each night he may visit a person and do one of three things: he may silence them, preventing them from posting during the following day; he may sabotage any and all items that they possess; or he may sacrifice himself in order to convert the player he visits into a member of the Flock. Regardless of what action he performs, he will also always learn the role of whomever he visits.
The Troll
A lumbering creature of great strength, but not always of great intelligence. Each night he may target another player, and if that player is visited by another role that is not a member of the Flock, they will die. They may be saved by protective roles, however. Additionally, he will learn the role of any player that visits him. If he chooses not to target another player, he also has a fifty percent chance of killing anyone that visits him.
Arion
A horse sired by the gods themselves. Whether you believe that he is the product of Poseidon and Demeter, or the child of the very Earth herself, it cannot be denied that he is a stallion of true majesty. Now he rides for Bo, and his abilities are a Secret.
The Hippocampus
A horse of the sea who may have once even served Poseidon himself. He now serves Moses, the Shepherd who can part the seas. His abilities are a Secret.
The Gingerbread Man
A graceful, albeit psychotic, man surrounded in infamy. Each night he will visit another player, killing them. He can either attain a solo victory by being the last player alive, or he may win alongside the Shepherds should Arxium fall before he or the Shepherds are eradicated.
Grendel
A reviled creature of legend. Each night, he will visit another player and transform them into a Grindylow, stripping them of their previous role and adding them to his forces. Due to his past experiences with inebriated mortals, he will instantly kill the Pygmy should it visit him.
The Kitsune
During Night Zero, the Kitsune may choose to become aligned with either the Arxians or the Shepherds, gaining a new ability dependent on this choice. Also, each night starting Night One, the Kitsune grows an extra tail. Should it survive to grow nine tails, something will happen.
The Doppelganger
A creature with the ability to physically copy another individual, from aspects such as their appearance to their abilities. On Night Zero, the Doppelganger will target another player, becoming a perfect copy of their role, including their alignment. If the Doppelganger targets a role with Skype Chat capabilities, it will not gain access to that chat.
Baba Yaga
An old woman of the forest, and one of three sisters bearing the title Baba Yaga. Each night, she may visit another player, randomly empowering or hindering their abilities. If the Firebird is dead, she may also randomly kill her target. Any player that visits her, regardless of whether the Firebird yet lives, may be randomly killed, unless they are carrying a Firebird Feather. If they are not killed, then their action will be randomly empowered or hindered during the following night.
