Fakemon Design Contest - Prompt #2

We're still waiting a bit for the Prompt 1 results, but we might as well already release the second prompt.

As we all know, today's real world ecology is vastly different from the world of the past and will likely be very different from the one in the future. Climate change, pollution, over hunting, invasive species, hybridization (as well as, or perhaps, despite conservation efforts) among many of other things means that species that thrived in the past are now forced to adapt to new surroundings, and species that had a very niche place now find themselves able to breed and expand and reach new horizons (even if it's to the detriment of every one around them, including themselves).

And we also know these sort of things happen in the Pokemon world as well.

The Past and the Future

You (and your pair, if you have one) should design a Fakemon that is a past or future variant of one of the existing Pokémon released before Generation IX (no spoilers ~ ).

What do we mean by that? Here's a non-exhaustive list of ways to interpret the prompt:

• Temporal & Regional Form of a Pokémon (you can specify a particular region, think of it as the past / future version of a regional form)
• Fossil revival (if the species die out today, how would it look if its bones remained as fossils for the future?)
• Fossil origins (what did a fossil species look like in its hey day?)
• Pokémon evolution (Basically a temporal / regional form, but also evolving at the same time. Can you explain why it's only available in the future, or no longer available now?)

General Tips

The prompt should influence both the visual design aspects (how much does the final result looks like they're a future / past version of an existing Pokemon) and textual aspects (how much does stuff like name, species, dex entries, etc. reflect the evolution process).

As such, despite having a "prompt check" session, in a perfect entry, it'd be completely superfluous because the design would tell us the same thing. You might want to use this as a sort of litmus test.

It can be funny, creepy, heartwarming, scientifically impossible, whatever you want! The important part is telling a story with your writing and your art.

The key point for this prompt is Temporal, or I guess you could say it's all about Darwinian Evolution / Devolution.

Whether you're doing a temporal form of a "normal" Pokémon or a "regional" form is up to you, that said, regional variants are seen as regional variants precisely because it's implied (or in some cases like Alolan Meowth, outright stated) that they were brought in from another region and then changed, so it doesn't really make for sound lore to talk about "Past Alolan Meowth" for example, since that's either Kantonian Meowth or just "Past Meowth".

That said, you could make the argument that all regional variants are some kind of "Future Pokemon" since they do exactly what I'm describing here: they changed (from a base form) to adapt to their surroundings.

Primals are absolutely allowed and while Mega Evolutions aren't necessarily ruled out, they don't fit the prompt by themselves. You'd need to do some explaining regarding how that Mega Evolution fits the concept of Past or Future.

[... I]t didn't provide any answers about the mysteries of evolution. I still don't know why some Pokémon evolve and others don't. Ultimately, it only deepened the mystery. But having mysteries to solve... That adds to my enjoyment!

The results

First and foremost, I'd like to thank and congratulate all the people who participated! You all put a lot of work into this and it's teeming with creativity. Some of these were very tough choices for us to rank!

From last (but certainly not least) place all the way to the winner, the entries for the first prompt were:

#10 - Malydict (Gimmepie) with 8.25 / 10

Typing: Ice/Psychic

Evolution Family: Smoochum family (Jynx)
Evolution Method: Evolves when a different Pokemon in the party reaches max friendship while its own is less than max.

Pokedex Entry:

• When a Jynx is filled with jealousy and rage, it can develop such a powerful vendetta that it fuels its evolution. The powerful curses Malydict subject their enemies to have become the source of many scary folktales.

Pair: N/A

Comments:

While the evolution method itself was interesting and the dex entries were fun, the visual aspect of the design felt a bit like a normal Jynx evolution instead of incorporating the method per se.

You offered a very interesting twist around perhaps the most annoying evolution method, and it's highly appreciated. Visually speaking, it could've used a bit more of work, but in everything else, this is brilliant.

#9 - Mansparce (Megan) with 8.5 / 10

Species Name: Hammer Snake Pokemon
Typing: Normal/Dragon

Evolution Family: Evolves from Dunsparce
Evolution Method:
In the far away region Polenia there flow hidden deep under the surface streams of life regarded to as Mana by the inhabitants. Researchers have for the longest time tried to study this phenomenon but to no avail.
Mana is toxic to humans which means they can't get exposed to it for too long. Pokemon resist its poison but are greatly limited in its grasp. It is said that once certain Pokemon reach the spring of such a Mana flow they may reach a new level of power.

Springs of Mana are located on different underground places all over the region. The player can enter them only in a special suit. But even then they can only stay for a limited amount of time. If they fail to reach the end, they pass out and find themselves back at the beginning.
Pokemon can deal with these conditions just fine. However, Abilities are negated and Eggs don't hatch. There's a chance, if the player carries a Phione Egg, for it to turn into a Manaphy Egg. Any Pokemon caught inside the dungeon will always have its hidden ability.
At the end of the dungeon awaits the source of Mana which will take on the form of whatever Pokemon engages it. If the Pokemon that can evolve this way manages to beat its reflection in a fight it'll attempt to evolve at the end of the battle. After the battle is won the spring will dry up and it'll take a while for it to recover.

Dunsparce is one of the Pokemon who evolve that way.

Pokedex Entry:

• When it feels threatened it uses its tail to jump high up in the air. It escapes once its pursuer is startled.
• It's big wings aren't useful for long flights. Instead it uses them for short glides

Comments:

Interesting design, but it seems disconnected from the evolution. I suppose part of it is that the evolution process itself needed some kind of stablishing presence so we were aware of its graphical conventions. In a more minor note, it also reads a bit as regional variant instead of an evolution, since it has more or less the same general body shape and approximate proportions.

Writing entire lore around an evolution method is honestly brilliant, so props for that. Sadly, the textual design in specific fell a bit flat. Building up on how Mana affected Dunsparce specifically for it to become a dragon type and gain this form would've made this almost perfect.

#7 - Hypnaku (Apro) with 8.7 / 10

Evolution Family: Drowzee line (Hypno)
Evolution Method: Knock out an asleep opponent

Pokedex Entry:

• Hypnaku is said to originate from the world of dreams. It induces nightmares and then consumes the fears of those it had put to sleep.

Comments:

It's a design that makes sense for the line, but it also feels exactly like what I'd expect a Hypno evolution to look like, regardless of the evolution method.

Interestingly enough, we don't have a Pokémon that evolves by beating another one a specific way. I like how you integrated many of the different aspects of the Baku without making the design feel too saturated, but the third eye didn't really work for me and I wish we could've gotten a bit of context around it in the PokéDex entries.

#7 - Chariogoul (Vision of Milotic) with 8.7 / 10

Name: Chariogoul
Species Name: Pumpkin Coach
Typing: Grass / Ghost

Evolution Family: Pumpkaboo family
Evolution Method: Cycling. Put a Pumpkaboo in your party, and race at top speed on your bike for 4,884–5,140 steps to trigger Pumpkaboo to evolve into a Chariogoul, instead of Gourgeist.

Pokedex Entry:

• It hides in processions of vehicles at events like weddings, parades and get-together festivals. Reportedly, those tricked into riding a Chariogoul are never heard from again.
• Though mischievous, Chariogoul is not always associated with evil. Some folk magic traditions say the light from it's eyes wards off bad spirits.

Comments:

I like the general concept, but the design feels a bit more Digimon to me and the dex entries (while very fun) felt disconnected from the evolution process.

I like thinking about Pumpkaboo growing wheels because it struggles trying to keep up with its trainer, it's honestly very cute. I also really like how this is inspired in Cinderella's chariot. However I think the visual design is lacking a bit, since I have trouble finding Pumpkaboo elements in Chariogoul, I think playing more with the colour could've worked nicely.

#6 - Webogre (Fairy) with 8.95 / 10

Species Name: The Websling Pokémon
Typing: Bug / Dark

Evolution Family: Spinarak family
Evolution Method: Capture Spinarak in a Netball at night

Pokedex Entry:

• In the night, Webogre stalks the edge of riverbanks for its prey, using a silken net to capture its meals. The hair on its body is highly sensitive to vibrations on the water's edge.

Pair: N/A

Comments:

I loved the design, but it feels more Digimon than Pokémon visually, and the dex entries felt a bit disconnected from the evolution process.

This is genuinely scary, but it's awesome. A Pokémon that evolves upon being caught is certainly strange, but this is exactly what this prompt is about. The Net Ball pattern is an amazing detail, and I love the spiderweb slingshot. I would've loved to know why the Net Ball triggers the evolution though.

#5 - Dhamecho (Panda280) with 9 / 10

Name: Dhamecho (Dame-mec-cho) - Dhamma and echo
Species Name: The Enlighted Bell Pokemon
Typing: Psychic and Normal

Evolution Family: Chingling family
Evolution Method: Once in a battle, Chingling must K.O a ghost type pokemon with a sound based move.

Pokedex Entry:

• Dhamecho is said to ward off evil spirits with its sound. Any evil spirits who heard Dhamecho's chime become weakened and taken away inside its ribbon-like tail. The longer the tails, the more spirits it contains.
• Chingling evolves to this Pokemon when it learns to ward off ghost spirit with its word. The sound Dhamecho made instills a sense of peace in the person who listens to them. This pokemon is kept in many pagodas.

Comments:

I generally enjoyed the design, but the Pokemon felt a bit squished. I would really suggest making the main bell a bit longer so you could spread out the face, arms and gems a bit more. Bronzong is an example of Buddhist bell Pokémon that could serve as an inspiration for composition.

Very interesting fakemon in general, with a really well thought out textual design, I love when underrated Pokémon get some love. Perhaps the visuals could have used some more detail and Chingling line elements, but overall really nice design.

#4 - Inukshuden (Eleanor) with 9.3 / 10

Name: Inukshuden
Species Name: Stone Heap Pokémon
Typing: Rock / Ground

Evolution Family: Stonjourner family
Evolution Method: Inukshuden must take damage equal or higher than 80% of its maximum HP (thus getting to red HP) in a single battle, but must not faint during said battle. If this condition is met, at the end of this battle any Inukshuden at level 30 or above will evolve into Stonjourner.

Pokedex Entry:

• The Sun in the sky guides Inukshuden's slow movements. This creates a line of Pokémon that mountaineers often use for guidance.
• It's made of various pebbles balancing on each other. Sometimes the pile crumbles and is rebuilt, but no one has yet seen it happen.

Comments:

I like the concept, and you did do a harder task by doing a pre-evolution which I appreciate.

Honestly the cutest of them all, and it's nice to see Stonjourner get some love. I can actually see this fellow being an official Pokémon. The fact that this is a damage-taken based evolution plays a bit against it, sadly, since it's a method that somehow has become more common in recent titles, and I think some justification around why this specific method triggers evolution would've been nice.

#3 - Vigosterone (5qwerty) with 9.35 / 10

Species Name: Tachycardia Pokémon
Typing: Normal

Evolution Family: Slakoth family (Vigoroth)
Evolution Method: Evolves by using 10 Proteins (Iron, Calcium, Zinc, Carbos, HP UP do NOT count) on it. The 10th Protein will trigger its evolution.

Pokedex Entry:

• Overuse of artificial enhancements has caused its muscles to grow abnormally and its fur to change colour. Despite the different muscle masses of its two arms, it is able to attack with precision and intense power.
• The density of the green line on its abdomen is proportional to the strength of its heart, which beats extremely quickly. Leaders of Vigosterone packs will usually have the densest lines.

Comments:

I loved the campness of it all.

This is hilarious, and in fact really interesting as well. I think the green line and everything that came with it was a bit of an overkill, and I don't know if it's possible for these Pokémon to live in the wild as its second entry says when its existence is pretty much impossible without a third party trainer intervention.

#2 - Purrtune (Kitty) with 9.55 / 10

Evolution Family: Meowth family
Evolution Method: Achieve 7 critical hits using the move Pay Day

Pokedex Entry:

• Perrtune is said to only show itself to the truly fortunate, blessing the bearer with luck and riches. Its beckoning paw offers quite a punch to those who have the misfortune to face it in battle.

Comments:

I loved it for the most part. My one minor note is that it can read a bit as a Meowth variant instead of an evolution but it's still a strong family resemblance.

Is by chance (haha) one of its possible abilities Super Luck? You have the concept for this fakemon very clear, and I loved how you showcased it around the various aspects of its design. Only thing playing against it is the fact Sirfetch'd made this evolution method not very unique, but it's just one Pokémon and very well justified too.

#1 - Spiroak (Arcaneum & Kitty) with 9.9 / 10

Species Name: Sacred Tree Pokémon
Typing: Fairy/Grass

Evolution Family: Phantump family (Trevenant)
Evolution Method: Trevenant must be killed by a Dragon Pokémon or Move before it learns Phantom Force at level 36.

Pokedex Entry:

• In days of old, Trevenants used to fight off Dragon Pokémon which would constantly eat its bark for nutrients. If bested by these Dragon Pokémon, the spirit possessing Trevenant would be exorcised and it would sprout once more as Spiroak, becoming a sacred protector of everything around it.
• After several decades of keeping Dragon Pokémon at bay, Trevenants will wither away as the spirits possessing them weaken them. When this happens, they leave the tree and from this tree a new scared spirit sprouts in the form of Spiroak.

Pair: Arcaneum + Kitty

Comments:

It's a very lovely piece and I very much enjoyed the textual work.

Overall a really amazing entry. The evolution method is very well justified with the PokéDex entries, and visually it has an air of both divinity and eeriness that makes Spiroak feel like a very unique fakemon.

The Prizes

All members of the Top 3 were part of Team Guerreros, so for the team gets 175 points.

Team Guerreros also gets 20 (+5 x 4 points) more points for participating.
Team Arqueros gains a total of 15 (+5 x 3 points) for participating.

Arcaneum, Kitty and 5qwerty also gain a Smeargle VPP free of charge (although we ask to wait until after the GT to redeem it, since you might upgrade the prize with the next prompt).

The final standing thus are 195 points for Team Guerrero and 15 points for Team Arqueros.
