How long do you thin someone should wait before evolving a Pokemon? Personally I think it depends on the story, but at least never before the fourth gym - but it also depends on the Pokemon.

So a Charmander shouldn't really evolve until Erika's Gym if it were in the Kanto region.

I think for evolution concerning fan fiction - that way is the way to go.

Anyone agree with me?

Well, it really does depend. Is the Pokemon very powerful? Was it just hatched? How long is it take to get to the specific gyms? You have to take all of that into consideration. That's my advice, anyway.

Exactly, it depends on all the factors and everything - but I was reading one fic on P 67 and a Charmander evolved into a Charizard (that's right, two evolutions) after battling the rival's Squirtle as soon as he aquired it. That just annoys me.

As for eggs - well, I've never really got my head around them. I mean, in a fic, it would take forever. Or else there are the people who wait until they reach the next town and 'OMG, it hatched!'

Someone should really write something up on that, I know there's like, a paragraph, but still, it's something that in Pokemon is amazingly annoying.

Woah.

A question.

And I'm really interested in answers, because for another fic I was reading, I saw the trainer's Nincada evolve to Ninjask and then Shedinja in less than two minutes, when the pokemon never even fought before. That... shouldn't happen.

And I just woke up from some nap so sorry if I don't make sense. XD

Well, with what you're saying. Caterpie should never evolve to Metapod and/or Butterfree until the fourth gym. :X Personally, I kind of follow the games on this one. I can get my Charmander to evolve before the second gym, usually, or any of my starters for that matter. And I think I can get them to their final stages before the 5/6th gym. If I were to write an OT fic, I'd have that help me in a way.

But... all in all, it really depends on the story, how much battling the pokemon has done, and everything else. If you would be more specific on your question I could say more. =o

For me, there are a few factors that decide when and how I evolve a Pokemon:

1) If it's a starter Pokemon, I'd evolve a little after the Second Badge, solely because that's how long it takes in the games.

2) The current situation also matters a lot. It wouldn't make much sense to be walking down the street with your Pokemon and they evolve out of no where. Usually, I would have the trainer by in grave danger to push the evolution along.

3) Relationship between trainer and Pokemon. If the bond is strong, evolution will soon follow. In not, then oh well.

But the most annoying of all evolutions here are the freindship ones, like Eevee to Espeon and Umbreon. It's either way too long or way too short a time beofre most evolve - which really annoys me. '_'

So - I was wondering, could I have permission to create an evolution guide here? I know we have one, but it's about a paragraph long...

I think DP means that the Pokemon itself chooses to evolve, even if it's not a happiness-based evolution. This tends to happen in anime-based fics, where it's canon that a Pokemon can choose to evolve. (Bulbasaur and Pikachu both refused opportunities to evolve after preferring to stay the way they were, for example. Pidgeotto, meanwhile, chose to evolve to protect the flocks of Pidgey.) For that reason, in fics that tend to use the philosophy of evolution = choice, evolution is typically used as a moment of high drama. As in, there's a really big, plot-related reason for why that Pokemon evolved right then and there. Hence, it's up to the author to plan around that event if they choose to have their Pokemon evolve in that manner.

But otherwise, I'd say work it out the way it happens in the games. Don't do it after a couple of battles, but wait for a few chapters until the character has had the Pokemon for awhile and has used it in more than a few battles.

You don't really need permission, but you do have to make sure that the ideas are realistic. For example:

Personally I think it depends on the story, but at least never before the fourth gym - but it also depends on the Pokemon.

There's really no logic around this unless the Pokemon is a Larvitar or something, which in the games evolve around level 30.

There are multiple deciding factors for this, really:

1) The Pokémon. Some Pokémon evolve faster than others: Caterpie evolves at level 7, Electrike evolves at level 26, but Ponyta only evolves at level 40! It completely depends on the Pokémon and at what stage in their life they evolve.

2) The battling. Let's face it; some people will train their Pokémon like mad, battle every single wild Pokémon they see and make sure they've grown many levels before even getting to the first Gym, while others will just rush through the first route so as to get to the next city as quickly as humanly possible. Obviously if both start with a Charmander, and one trains their Charmander but the other one doesn't than, the first guy's Charmander will evolve first.
Basically, if in the fic you describe (or at least mention) mattling many wild Pokémon/other trainers, the Pokémon will end up evolving faster than otherwise.

3) The level. Let's not forget that in certain places in the wild, you can catch a wild Pidgey from level 7-13, as an example. It's entirely possible for a trainer in a fic to catch a Pokémon that is already close to evolution because it's already at a high level.
But let's not forget that if it's wild at a high level, it generally isn't as strong as the same Pokémon caught at a smaller level and trained by a human. So this isn't really advantageous for a trainer, even if the Pokémon needs less training! ^.~

4) The happiness. This is more about personal preference, but if you want to do like they did in the animé, then Pokémon will often choose to or not to evolve. Generally this goes more for happiness-based evolutions like with Pichu, Togepi or Eevee (and let me remind you, that just because a character has saved an Eevee while it was dying on the side of the road, does NOT mean that the Eevee will automatically love them and want to be with them and battle for them, especially not right away).
That part is really just personal preference in general, though. You could just choose to let evolution happen regardless or their feelings and just based on power, which imo works just fine.

5) The author. Sure, you can say that a Torchic shouldn't evolve until chapter three, but every writer writes differently and makes their chapter go at a different pace. Plus some people will say that getting to the next city takes an hour, some people may choose to make it a three day trek. Naturally, if you're in the wild for an hour versus three days, you won't be getting the same amount of training done. So you can say Torchic should only evolve at the second Gym, but if two writers either write at a different pace or just think that it would take either three hours or one week, then you can't really make a general rule for it. XP

I think the biggest deciding factor is how much battling gets done, really. Like I said, if the Squirtle is never sent out of its Pokéball to battle, then it probably won't do any evolving for awhile versus something as simple as a trainer who keeps Squirtle out of its Pokémon, but only fights the Pokémon who actually jump out and attack them.

And for wild Pokémon, their level before being caught is also a big factor. :P Which concludes my two cents.

After all of these points made I've decided I will make a section for it.

since this question has been eating at you for some time, what would lead you to think of something like that?

Isaac.... now when was the last time we saw your mug around here? Anyway, to answer your question: I don't know.... maybe it's because, if you were to look back at certain posting dates, I'd make some post strictly concerning my doujinshi, or openly expressing my distaste in written works, or my bad personal experiences with fanfiction, and then nobody would post in the thread again for about a week. This would leave me thinking "What the ****!? Did I just scare everyone off?"

Another problem I see is that I'm just kinda sticking around being all talk. As of right now, I still haven't actually started work on any of my projects. Aside from a need to practice drawing, I want to plan out my storylines to be absolutely perfect before I put anything on paper (though even then, complications are still bound to arise, namely with panel placement and consistent chapter lengths). I turned to fanfiction in the first place because it was easy to do, it's easy to edit, a media with which I could hope to work several rough drafts of the storyline. However, as I found out, putting descriptions into words was a real turn-off for me, and reviews (especially quality ones) never came as easily as I'd hope, and ironically, I ended up with only two "rough drafts" which barely got into the story.

I don't know if I mentioned this before, but I'm not particularly good at story analysis. I mean, I can enjoy a story as I see it of course, but it's only after seeing a review or something composed by an outside party do I go "Oh, now I see.... that's pretty interesting" while feeling like a bit of an idiot for letting it fly completely over my head as it did. Regardless, I try as hard as I can to make my manga seem.... well, like a manga. Aside from taking advantage of my growing bilingual skills to actually try and make the primary language that of manga's birthplace, I've always enjoyed Japanese media for being beautiful, powerful, dramatic, yet often-times light-hearted and involving charming characters (manga character designs in general are good, but I've especially got a serious weakness for moe ^^), with all of it, as I later learned, being meaningful in a lot of cases. That's what I want to create.

For years now, I've researched anime reviews, read people's comments, and more recently acquired a couple consultants I could IM now and again for advice. I've picking up bits and pieces of what exactly makes these sort of stories seem great which I couldn't initially notice (of course, I'm also using my own judgment amidst all that rather than blindly following what everyone else says), and I've been sticking around author advice threads for much the same reasons. Unfortunately, most the comments and advice given around here seem to concern grammar, which clearly doesn't help my cause much (likewise, this was a problem I had with what few reviews I had). Though, now and again, I'll see some good advice pop up that's more universal and dealing with storytelling in general.

Personally, I feel it shows that I've been gradually learning about good storytelling over time, for which I'm quite proud. This initially started off as just my brother's idea to make Pokemon seem more dark and edgy with an ongoing plot (this was back when the anime was still in Jouto), which I went along with because it just seemed cool. Over time, I saw flaws in said plot, gradually refined it, took the story as my own, and am now closer to what I want to make, even spawning other ideas for doujinshi in the process. This is evident between my two written versions alone, and the difference will be even bigger by the time the manga (hopefully final version) is eventually released. Though, with all that said, I'm still running into a few problems. I could probably speak up about it, as I'm not above asking for some hints around here, though I'd prefer to word it just right in order to avoid any possible spoilers. That's where things get a little tricky. XP

Most doujins art or even game are said to be visual fanfics of sorts I hear.

interesting that you mention games... amongst my multiple ideas for doujin projects, a game is one of them. On SPPF, I entered a contest and came up with a romance one-shot. It unfortunately didn't win (or even get top ****ing three -_-), but I held onto it as an idea I could make into a manga (a one-shot would be especially helpful in testing the waters and attracting attention before pulling off a long-running series). Problem is, I was kinda stuck on how to revise said story, which I feel kinda fell apart near the end. It was only a few months ago that I really started reworking the story after deciding: I'm gonna turn this romance into an H. ^^ As funny as it sounds, having the lead characters sleep together actually brought in some great potential for new central themes. Anyway, I might make it an H-manga, but I'm also considering, if I'm able to make some decent CG art and could recruit some simple programmers, a text adventure as a possibility (the idea of multiple paths and endings intrigues me ^^). Though, given the time and production that goes into a game (even if it's a simple text adventure which Japanese fans seem capable of churning out by the minute), that would defeat my original purpose of getting a one-shot out first. Fortunately, I have another idea for a one-shot, so all's well even if I do make this into an erogee.

That makes two of us. I always figured that you were just in-between fics or something, Yamato-san. xD Anyways, you still have experience from the world of fanfic writing and you usually bring up a good point or two in discussion, so I wouldn't really call you out of place. Besides, a lot of the stuff discussed concerns the franchise rather than the written format, so it's really equally relevant for fanfics and Doujishins. ^^

well, as I said earlier, the majority of the stuff I see here actually is writing-based (probably another reason I feel a bit out-of-place). Hell, I've looked at some of your guys' reviews and, aside from the occasional warning that a character could become a Mary Sue, I'm mostly seeing the usual grammar Nazi nitpicks. But thanks for saying I bring up good points. I don't know if you're mainly referring to what I said earlier about people attempting to "exchange" reviews, or the point I made about titles using "RE TAKE" as an example, but I am extremely well-versed in this franchise. For that matter, one interesting thing I'm aiming for in my doujinshi is a pretty strict loyalty to the source material, going so far as accurately representing base stats for each Pokemon (not using numbers, of course, but the whole basic idea that certain Pokemon are more hard-hitters, tanks, speed demons, etc., than others is there).

I have a question about my fanfic...should any of Nick's pokemon evolve or will that kill it?

That question is very ironic.

I would advise you to evolve a Pokemon, but one that isn't a central character. It'll leave the story open with the hint of more evolutions to come - but it won't make a big difference. Perfect!

Hmm...so whose pokemon should evolve? A main character... a semi-main character. The main supporting character...or some random person who is just "there"

A semi-main character... Main character will wreck it, random Pokemon will seem like you're running out of ideas...

random pokemon seems like you'd be writing a filler arc

Spoiler:

I'd do evos when the pokemon needs to be more powerful, or needs to overcome some type of struggle that it can't in it's current form. That's really the only reason why you'd do one. Don't evolve just for the sake of evolution.

Yamato-san, your posts are interesting and needed here. I mean, I told you that the post you made about Japanese nicknaming processes reminded me of how little I know about the Japanese culture. Besides, you're one of the most intelligent posters I have ever seen, and it would be a shame to lose you.

And to make you feel better about just being all "talk" here, take a look at the moderator of this section. I mean, she thinks that she's so knowledgeable about writing, but has anyone seen any portion of her work? She really needs to stop hiding behind the excuse of always revising her work. Quick! Someone PM her to tell her to get off her lazy arse and write, write, write!

I have a question about my fanfic...should any of Nick's pokemon evolve or will that kill it?
As soon as any fic has a Pokemon evolve in it, it dies. The author gets hit by a bus, struck by lightning, and kicked in the face by a six-year-old.

To be serious for a minute, it's your fic, Scythe-kun. Do whatever you want with it. Since Nick is a more experienced trainer, at least according to the Pokemon he has, one of them might be close to the point of evolution. But follow txteclipse's advice about how to go around writing an evolution. Having it be a matter of life-or-death, or perhaps just a win in battle, would add some drama to your story. And people on the Internet just love their drama.
