What is the most common thing happening in your fan-fictions?
Somebody dies, somehow. Or murders somebody or wants to. Or contemplates/commits suicide. Or just thinks about death.

Most evident in my ancient one-shots from when I wrote those, whose plots include...

- an Absol's babies are all killed so she thinks she will be killed but she is just caught so she nearly kills a kid before escaping and then a fire has started so everybody dies!
- a Delcatty is running from something and comes to a sacred beach, but then a Kingler comes along and doesn't respect the sanctity of the beach so he is going to kill her! But then she kills him instead! And there is an ambiguous ending where she may or may not drown herself in the sea.
- a trainer finds Mew, goes all "HOLY CRAP WOW" and fights it, only to realize when she throws the ball that, oh no, Mew died! So she kills herself!
- an Eevee is abused! So it one day evolves into an Espeon (turns out you can evolve from anger as well as happiness!) and kills its trainer! And then the Espeon is killed!
- a clueless guy who is nonetheless the Johto Champion happens to run across Entei one day, and it is so powerful that he makes his Pokémon kill it to escape! But then he finds Suicune and catches it, and then Raikou comes after him and kills him!
- in an alternate universe of sorts, Mewtwo has been caught and imprisoned and is starving to death. He dies while a neon sign flashes "CHRISTIAN SYMBOLISM!" above him!
- a Dragonite that uses Curse realizes too late that it is making a deal with the devil! It doesn't die, but it does become a soulless shell.

Hey I was wondering can there be a 18 and over Fanfiction board please, cause us adults like to write mature adult type of stories just for our liking, some of those little fics is too kiddiest for us, we need types of stories for our age group, so can there be an adult writting board, with it being password protected
 
No. This is a forum for people of all ages. If you want to read more "adult" stories, then there are sites out there that allow you to do so. This site is open to all ages, and having a more mature place on this forum, even password-protected, is not something PC wants, or even needs. Like I said, this is the Internet, with sites for whatever you're looking for.

So the answer is "Absolutely not."

Is it just me, or has this place suffered a serious lack of activity? C'mon guys, we can't revert back to the old days of the FF forum.
 
The inactivity was probably due to the server being dead for the past couple of days. Also, perhaps people just don't have the time to focus on their writing because of school/work/other concerns.

I would bring some activity here by reviewing stories, but the unfortunate side of OW is that I'm never sure what fandom is going to be posted. Most of the stories posted these days are in fandoms I don't follow, so it's rather difficult to review.

Hopefully activity will pick up during the northern hemisphere summer months.

What's this place? It's like the PFF(&P)L, but without as many posts and the presence of an orgy.

"Other Writing," huh? The notion of writing that is not about Pokemon befuddles me...
 
On the subject of adult content, if I may tip in my two cents in addition to what Asty said, it's perfectly possible to write non-kiddie stories that don't need an NC-17/M rating slapped onto them. I mean, there's that entire PG-13 and R range right there (both of which are perfectly acceptable according to PC standards, so long as there's a warning -- because, yes, I actually read the rules at least once), and it's full of stuff that involves drugs, violence, dark fic, sexual innuendo (but nothing sexually explicit), allusions to suicide -- that kind of thing.

There's not too much you can do to actually earn that "adult" rating properly. Off the top of my head, NC-17 films only get that rating if they're essentially porn or snuff, so if we have literary media that uses the same rating system, what would get an NC-17 rating would essentially be smut fic (i.e., lemons, wherein you've got two people getting it on, detailed description, possible abuse of the word "member," and the writer most likely with a hand in his pants) and possibly blood and gore in every other paragraph. (Note that going into detail about gore where appropriate in fic usually gets an R rating.)

Long story short, yes, we adults like to write mature stuff that isn't Happy Rainbow Candy Land, but it doesn't necessarily have to be NC-17 or a similar end of the rating spectrum. If you're writing that, I kinda have to wonder about your fandoms. (I mean, okay, there's some kind of comedy value in imagining two or more -- or even one if there's interesting circumstances involved -- characters in any given fandom I'm in getting it on, but to do it seriously and with enough enthusiasm to want to do it enough to have a considerable influence in that kind of archive? Um, can't say this adult feels like it. Even if I could write smutty crackfic drunk.)

In other words, if you want non-kiddie stuff, have you tried the R rating? It's a lovely place. We have chainsaws.

If you call within 30 minutes, you get one with a Chansey!

Personally, I don't have anything against stories that have drugs, violence, utter darkness and suicidal or sexual themes in them. Nope, those don't bother me at all. And lookie, the rules - and Xanthine and Astinus - say it's all right to write that stuff! So, I could freely have my characters smoke some pot and cigarettes while they're drinking vodka and then, after some vomiting in the bathroom, they could go into another room for some mature activity. Right? Is that mature enough? Although, I really don't write or follow any fandoms in which something like that would be credible.

On the other hand, I really, really don't want to read about overly graphic violence in every other sentence, neither do I want to know how people ram various body parts into each other, if you get what I mean. I find it a lot more classy and enjoyable if some things are left untold. For example, I really don't like movies with close-ups of genitals or huge, bloody injuries - something that often ruins horror movies for me. French movies are often spoiled with unnecessary amount of on-screen sex. If it's not important for the story, it shouldn't be there. Porn for the sake of porn is another thing, movies with actual plots are another. For me, that goes for books and comics as well: if I want to read something that has a plot, I don't want the plot to be stalled while some huge injury is described.

Moderation is the key word. Most of us are okay with mature themes when they are used in moderation. Most of us don't want to seriously read fics that are overly sexual or gorey, unless maybe when we're drunk, and if we're drunk, it doesn't count as serious. An archive for "18 and over" fics wouldn't have much fics nor readers in it. Besides, if there really is a need for fics or archives like that, one can always turn to Google. You know, if you can think of it, someone has already put it in the internet.

Also, where can I line up for a chainsaw?

Sappy scenes usually set to some inspirational or romance song.

Someone invariably challenging someone else to a trivia quiz instead of a Pokemon battle (previous subjects have been chemistry, Quality Inns, prime numbers, the Charlotte, NC highway system, and the greatest common divisor.)

Many of my characters like big cars (and they cannot lie)

Complaining that the routes in Pokemon regions aren't six-lane paved freeways and bemoaning the local Department of Transportation.

And probably others that I can't think of right now...

I remember that one-shot, and all I could think after reading it was "Has Dragonfree been watching Neon Genesis Evangelion or something"? (Lulz)

In retrospect? The thing that happens most often in my fanfics is... me chickening out and not posting them. Seriously.
 
This question has been in my mind lately as I've been reading fan fictions...

Other then Pokemon, where do you take your inspirations, style, and ideas from. (Such as other television shows, movies, books, etc.)

For me... I suppose my ideas and themes could be found elsewhere but I didn't really take it from anywhere. As for inspiration, part of it was from House and Scrubs for some reason. My style of relaying my story is actually closer to mystery movies and books. Not as childish and easy to figure out as scooby doo but no where near as complicated as sherlock holmes or something like that.

What? No crack? Sounds like a boring fanfiction you've got there.

Seriously, gotta second An-chan's bit about reading it as well. Not that either of us are particularly squeamish. It's just that reading porn or snuff isn't everyone's cup of tea all the time. (Personally, I only read porn if I want a good laugh because 90% of porn fic is badly written, either because it's PWP, by an author who doesn't know the mechanics or other basic biology, or by an author who doesn't understand that thesaurus abuse = hilarious mental images. Other than that, no, I don't care for an entire archive of porn right there in front of me simply because other than those times when I want a laugh, it doesn't get me going.)

Also, if you do want to read that stuff, there are archives out there dedicated completely to adult fanfiction. (AFF, for example. And I'm leaving it up to your own common sense to decide whether or not you should be looking it up.) So, if I really wanted it, it's not that difficult to go out and find it without getting an archive of it on PC. Sure, by this logic, we wouldn't need the regular archives (because we have Fanfiction.net), but on the other hand, when it comes to posting fanfiction, we have those forums to get feedback. As in, we can't just go to FFNet because, frankly, FFNet doesn't always have the best critics (particularly because of character limits in reviews and the lack of ability to reply to everyone). So, the fic forums here serve the purpose of giving us a place to post and to critique and obtain advice, rather than just to post and read (which is FFNet's primary focus, not so much the critiquing part).

With adult fanfiction, you're narrowing your audience down considerably. First, you're excluding the considerable population on this board who's not old enough to view the archive in the first place. Second, you're excluding the considerable population on this board who can access the archive because they're old enough but just don't care to (for the aforementioned reason being that porn and snuff -- basically, the stuff that would merit being put in such an archive -- doesn't float everyone's boat all the time). So, you're left with a tiny percentage of people who would actually want to read and critique such work. For AFF, because they're an open archive aimed at a similar post and read focus as FFNet, it's okay if they only have a small audience because the entire point of having such an archive is to have such an archive. For a forum like PC's writing forums, however, you can't just have an archive for the sake of having an archive because that defeats the purpose of a forum (which is to be open to both posting and critiquing for the sake of the reader and the author).

In other words, to make an even longer post (which may be restating what An-chan and I have already said) short, the larger reason why an adult forum might not work for a board is simply because adult fanfiction is very much one-sided -- as in, it's written for the pleasure of a small portion of a fandom, one that doesn't always feel the need to comment so much as to read and get some sort of emotional reaction from what's being written. (This is why plot isn't always a big part of the mature stuff, kids.) Forums, however, are not meant for one-sided interaction.

Nope, I'd never seen Evangelion. It was just this image that popped into my head (after seeing a friend's drawing of, twistedly enough, a crucified dragon) along with a crazy remote possibility of a Biblical parallel and wouldn't leave me alone until I'd written it. Which I did, all the while thinking, "Me using Christian symbolism. Ha, ha, ha. Good one."

I still love it, mind you, but it was a very unlikely thing for me to do.

Oh lord, where to begin. The E.C. is inspired by the works of Anne McCaffrey, Terry Brooks, J.R.R. Tolkien, Naomi Novik, John Milton, William Shakespeare, Edgar Allan Poe, and Christopher Paolini, as well as Dragonheart, Final Fantasy, Dexter, and thousands of other minor things I don't care to take the time to list. It's also inspired by good ol' life experience.

Mastermind is inspired by Bladerunner, Ghost in the Shell, Ender's fill-in-the-blank, 1984, Battlestar Galactica, R-Type Final, and more.

For Midsummer Knights, obviously, Shakespeare. There's also a bit of the manga Dream Gold in that the Game's got keys, knights, and dangerous missions where people die. (It's a shame only one volume of that manga got translated, by the way.) Other than that, twisted imagination.

For AEM, purely science fiction and fantasy clichés. The entire thing was meant to be like a campy sci-fi movie that appears to take itself seriously. (And actually does a lot of the time only because I suck at writing parody.) You know, the kind of thing that actually would end up on Mystery Science Theater 3000.

Style, I've pretty much developed on my own, as a result of reading too much of a bunch of different authors and inadvertently taking elements of their own writing and pooling them into mine. For example, I read a lot of Neil Gaiman, and for that, I might throw in some dry humor and casual suspension of reality. Recently, I've started reading Orson Scott Card's books, and as a result, what I've written (i.e., chapter seven) while reading Speaker For the Dead ended up being darker than I meant it to be.

And where did I get this penchant for writing violence? Real life frustrations and recollections of sitting through multiple science courses. I admit it.

Eh, I really don't think there's much of a messianic paralell, since Mewtwo isn't sacrificing himself for anything in particular. But I'm glad there's someone besides me who's never watched the series. (I've read a volume or two of the licensed manga and know the rest by reputation.)

Occasionally I draw them from dark spirits that roam the cosmos who can be contacted through simple divination spells using mainly spoons.

Other than that, I'd have to say the manga Jing: King of Bandits really shows up a lot in Thief in the Night, in that I got the idea after reading it. Jing doesn't really have much of a "plot", but the series is great because it's literally FILLED with references from everything to "The Little Prince" by Andre Sain-Exeupery to the book of Joshua in the Old Testament, to "The Great Dictator" to alcholic beverages and Russian instruments. The artwork is zany, and the series is overall incredibly bizarre and hard to dislike if you're a fan of a series where the fun isn't entirely in the plot or characters. It's like reading a running in joke on five hundred levels. While I don't do the same thing in writing, I have a tendency these days to make puns from the titles of songs, and in my upcoming rewrite of "Thief in the Night" I made a decision to go ahead for a surreality feel that brings it closer to Jing. Other influences include whatever else I'm reading or watching, and those special mushrooms that John Lennon was always eating. xD

Actually, he was - it was all about freeing the Pokémon. It wasn't precisely elaborated upon (though it was mentioned), since the full details were supposed to be in the third one-shot, which I never wrote.

Aww! I was going to say "crack", but then I didn't know what is the proper verb to go with it! It's all school's fault! They don't teach us this stuff at school! So, tell me, with what verb do you get crack into your system?

Seriously, I'm going to sue someone in our goverment for this. They should teach us all slang words for all drugs and their usage, so that we can... err... avoid them...


I was going to second Xanthine's post, but then it occurred to me that if I did, I'd only be rewording both our posts. I just have to say that yes, reading (or even watching!) porn or whatever you want to call your mature sex-fic-stuff - I'm really not that familiar with the proper terms because no matter where I look, they always say "if you don't know what this means, you're too young to know" - can result in serious lols. Honestly, the only times I would look into that archive would be

1) out of curiousity when it'd first appear, and
2) for lols, because for some reason, this world has people who want to write porn but don't want to use the words 'breast' or 'penis'.

In other words, I would most likely never post there. I should assume porn fics would mostly get the kind of comments you never wanted to get telling you stuff you never wanted to know. So, not a good idea.

Instead, I propose that we put up a Secret Writer's Society with a secret password and a secret greeting, and then we can start saving people with our secret superpowers! There would be a strict validating process for all potential members, after which we would offer the writer the possibility of joining our SWS. Should they decline, a squad of ninja assasins is immediately dispatched. Also, cookies for everyone!

Okay, kids. Time for Xanthine's Corner, where Xanthine teaches all you youngun's the things you need to know if you're browsing fanfiction archives that aren't PC. Some of these may be outdated or rarely used nowadays, and if so, feel free to correct me.

Citrus is usually used in anime fanfiction to denote fanfiction (in general) with sexual themes. This doesn't necessarily have to be the hardcore stuff. It just means that somewhere along the line, you're at least alluding to it. (Note: Jokes, flirting, et cetera do not count as citrus. The actual action does. One can argue that full nudity would too, but really, in literature, there's nothing wrong with saying someone's naked, I think, especially if you're not describing anything other than their lack of clothing anyway.)

Lime is when you're just saying that the action is taking place. In other words, the adults go in the room, shut the door, and the kids don't know what's going on, but the audience knows what they're doing. To be a bit simpler, it's having it happen but not describing anything. In a sense, it's anything from high PG-13 (as in, teetering close to bumping the rating up a notch) to R.

Lemon is the hardcore stuff. As in, it's like being in the room and watching it happen. In other words, NC-17 stuff.

In general, smut is used for fanfiction that's not necessarily anime but is on the lemon level. You can also use porn, but no one really does because, really, that's not a euphemism.

Also, a few other terms you'll want to keep in mind:

- Fluff is a romance fic in which nothing actually happens. As in, it's the cutesy talk-and-hold-hands variety, where the pair are actually obviously in love, but they don't really take it much further. It's mild stuff.
- Shounen ai is anime romantic fanfiction involving boys in love with one another. It does not involve sex. Shoujo ai is the female (girl-on-girl) counterpart of this.
- Yaoi is boys-on-boys again, only it involves sex. Yuri is the female counterpart of this. (Note: These are western definitions. To make a complicated story short and simple, western fans use these terms to define different levels of fanfiction, so when you see yaoi, it means something completely different from shounen ai if it's in a fanfiction archive. In Japan, when in reference to manga and other media, the latter's a subset of the former.)
- Slash is non-anime fanfiction that involves homosexuality. It doesn't necessarily have to involve sex, but depending on the fandom, it usually does anyway. Femslash is the female version of this, but I tend to use just slash myself (simply because the "fem" prefix makes me think it's a derogatory term).
- Gen is fanfiction that has absolutely no romantic or sexual content whatsoever. I'm just putting this here in case anyone's wondering.

There you have it. The basic terms you'll see applied to romance (and non-romance) fanfiction. If I've missed one, feel free to add to the list or ask. I won't define fetishes because, really, I can only go so far on this board. I'm just defining the above because it appears a lot in fandom anyway (even this one), so you're probably bound to encounter one of the above if you navigate to, say, FFNet. (Or even better, LiveJournal.)

That and, really, you might encounter situations where the lovely people are misusing the terms above. Laugh at them if they do.

Actually, depends on the archive. XD On LJ (where people completely disregard LJ's want for no fandom smut unless they can use it to feed drama), you get comments pretty much similar to FFNet. As in, "This description was so hot!" On actual porn sites, you get people attempting to add to the story or expressing their love for whatever fetish might be involved. So, yeah. You either have one-liner reviews or exactly what you're describing.

...Don't ask me how I know this.
