You will have to reactivate the OS, but whether you have to reinstall depends on how different the new one is. Pot luck, really. Although Windows 7 should transfer fine, Vista could be patchy and XP will probably die.
 
am running wi vista, i did a simalar thing for a freind, but i built him a new one, but put his old HDD with vista basic and it seem to work fine.

Yeah, as I said, it depends on how simar they are. If it's the same chipset, then not problem. I doubt it will be the same chipset if it supports more ram, but you can only hope. I'd make sure to back up what you need. You could also try making an image and then laying it back down on the new hardware, with something like ShadowProtect, that supports hardware-independent restores.

Some proprietary software is too expensive to upgrade and/or far behind (eg. audio engineering) for some to completely switch from XP. If it's a question of anything other than software compatibility, then there's not much reason to stick with XP, especially in light of 7's drastic improvements.

Also, in dualbooting XP and Vista or newer, XP MUST be installed first. Vista and 7 use a completely rewritten boot manager and while it's backwards compatible, the reverse isn't true of XP's.
 
Not yet, I'll probably test it out in a VM on monday or whenever I get back home. I may loOk up info on it during the longer flights.

Not used to VMware, but play around with the CPU-related options for machine's options. Also check that Virtualisation is enabled in the bios.
 
I ended up uninstalling SP1 last night. Steam crashed twice and when I tried to play Team Fortress 2 it would tell me I was not logged into steam when I was. So I just got rid of the SP and everything went back to normal.

lol, Steam just crashes all the time for me anyway. I'd hate to think what it would be like with the Service Pack... :cer_laugh:

Just bough FEAR2 for PC. Quite an interesting game.

Steam never crashed when I used XP. I haven't downloaded it on 7 yet, so I can't say it might have anything to do with the operating system.

Speaking of 7, I get random disconnections from the Internet from time to time. It wasn't unheard of when I was using XP, but it happened far less. I don't think it has anything to do with bandwidth, as it hasn't happened in ages on XP. But maybe it is.

Also, do you guys think a Core2 Duo / HD5770 will be enough to run Battlefield BC2 and COD4 at 1280x1024? As long as I get smooth framerates, I don't care what it looks like. :P

I wanna say that it's your network, your NIC, or your driver, not the OS. I haven't had any disconnection issues unless the router was turned off or I had multiple connections to the internet through different networks with my Windows 7 machine in the 9 months I've been running the OS on my Desktop.

Ah. Well, as it turned out, it was mainly just my connection, acting up like usual.

I'm also running into another problem - flickering. When I right click something and highlight a command, the text flickers for a split second. This is actually very annoying, especially when I'm playing RuneScape with SwiftKit. In the corner, there's a game timer, and it flickers every second. I'll probably just have to get used to it, lol.

It'll be patched in an update, I'm sure.

I've been rocking SP1 for a few days now, and the worst that happened was that my custom Start orb was broken (easily remedied in a few clicks).
 
Hmm, still haven't gotten around to installing SP1 on my windows partition, been too busy admiring some of the improvements in Mac OS 10.7. I got one of the dev previews and I have to say, I'm digging most of the upgrades, though it does lack a little something without multi-touch.

You are a dev or you found in some dark corner of the undernet?:P when you mention the multitouch absence, is that due to you using a mouse on your Mac Pro?

I'll consider trying it out closer to the release.
 
Yeah, I have a dev account. I don't really develop all that much but it is fun to have access to the newest releases and updates. (also the free copies of SL, SL server, Lion, and Lion server are also pretty cool too)
The multitouch absence is due to the lack of Bluetooth in my mac pro. I think I'll live without it and revise my user habits with my next computer upgrade.
