The Baton Pass Challenge

Rocket, Magma, Aqua, Galactic, Flare, even Plasma... one thing has always united all of these teams: Pokémon battling. Maybe the goal was never to be the best like no one ever was, but it was to get the job done, and Grunts from all over the world took at least some pride in that. However this, within the realm of the Olympics, is not enough anymore. This time, it will be decided which team really is the strongest at Pokémon battles.

Rules and premise

🏅 This is a team challenge where every participant will begin playing on a Pokémon game of their choice. The save file will then be transferred around to other team members, with the final goal of defeating the Champion and entering the Hall of Fame. Every badge obtained in a save file will yield a small amount of Challenge Points, whereas reaching the Hall of Fame will yield a rather considerable amount.

For this reason, newer games can be particularly difficult to utilize for this challenge. Switch games are banned from this challenge, due to the limited availability of emulators and modding tools, while 3DS games can be used if there's strong agreement within each team. Nevertheless, we strongly recommend playing games from Generations 2 to 5 for this Challenge. Please communicate with your team so that everyone has a good time and can make an impact during the challenge!
Hacks and fangames are technically alright to use, but only if they have 8 badges and a typical Pokémon League (wouldn't recommend them anyways, most of the other rules are made with main series games in mind!)​

🏅 Each player will progress through one segment at a time, before exchanging the save file with another player from the same team. A Segment is the stretch of the game between two Gyms, or between the last gym and the Hall of Fame - please check the glossary below for a better run down! Progressing through the game will yield some Challenge Points.
🏅 Every player can complete up to 13 segments for their team (each game should take 9 segments to be completed, so 4 of them are bonus), and can play on multiple games at the same time. The only thing to avoid at all costs is playing two segments in a row on the same save file.
🏅 When entering the Hall of Fame on any save, please post a screenshot of your team (or Hall of Fame) here on the forums!
🏅 When signing up, every player will be randomly assigned three Trainer Classes, of which they can only pick one to play as during the challenge. Each class is given one Restriction (one additional gameplay rule that will need to be always followed), and a Task that can be completed a set amount of times (if you want). Completing that challenge will yield a high amount of Challenge Points.
🏅 Of course, the goal of each team is to gather as many Challenge Points as possible.

🏅 No legendary / mythical Pokémon with a BST higher than 600 should be used during the challenge.
🏅 Given how the challenge works, modifying your game is not allowed, even for small quality of life features that can be added via the Pokémon Randomizer.
🏅 Soft-resetting your game and using save states during the challenge to retry certain fights or Pokémon encounters is fine, and any task completed after soft-resetting will still be valid. However, when playing as some Trainer Classes, soft-resetting comes with a harsh cost. Please keep that in mind when playing!
🏅 The battle style should always be on SET for everyone! Remember that by default, on any new save, it's set on SHIFT.

A quick glossary

Here's a few terms that you could come across while playing this challenge or while working with your rules to follow.
🖊️ Segment - this is the stretch of a game, as long or short as it may be, that you have to play through between two different gym challenges. So your first segment will start from the beginning of the save file up until the first gym, and so on - while your final segment will be anything that happens from the moment you defeat the eighth gym leader and up to your entrance in the Hall of Fame.
🖊️ Milestone Battle - a battle against a Gym Leader, Champion, or Elite 4 member (yes, they count too!). In the Alola Games, where there are no typical Gym Leaders but there still need to be nine segments for the sake of the challenge, your Milestone Battles will be Ilima's trial, Kahuna Hala, Kawe's trial, Kahuna Olivia, Acerola's trial, Kahuna Nanu, Mina or Kommo-o's trial, and Kahuna Hapu.
🖊️ Boss Battle - any trainer battle that is against a villainous team Admin or Leader, your Rival, as well as any Milestone battle. In the Alola games, every trial that is not already a Milestone battle counts as a Boss Battle instead.
🖊️ Restriction - this is a mandatory rule that is associated with your Trainer Class and that you will have to follow during your adventure.
🖊️ Task - as mentioned, this is an additional challenge for every trainer class, that you may choose to complete on your terms but that can be very valuable in terms of points. These tasks will usually yield nearly always the same amount of Challenge points, but some may only need to be repeated one time to get all of the points at once, while others only give a fraction of the reward for every time you complete them, but can be repeated up to (for example) five times to make up for that, even during the same segment (unless specified otherwise).​

Save Exchange

✉️ Here's a quick guide for finding your save file for most Pokémon games. Unless specified, the save file will need to have the exact same file name as your game file, in order to be recognized. Also, please remember to utilize your save file, not your save states! The save files are what you obtain when you utilize the in-game "Save" menu.

✉️ 3DS games - Citra: open up the emulator without starting your game. On the main screen, find the game you're playing, right-click and find the option to open the save file folder. You'll be looking for a file named "main" with no extension. If you need to import the save, you can do the same to access the save file folder and replace your "main" file.

✉️ DS games - DesMuMe: inside the folder where the DesMuMe application is located, you can find a folder named "Battery" with your save files (not states) inside, as .dsv files. If you run into compatibility problems, you can try opening the game on DesMuMe, go to File > Export backup memory, and you should be able to get a save file in the .sav format instead. To import a save, either drop your .dsv file in the Battery folder, or go to File > Import backup memory right after opening your game of choice, if you are using a .sav file.

✉️ DS games - MelonDS, Drastic: for MelonDS, the save file should be in the same folder as your .nds game file. For Drastic, on phone, you can navigate to the "Drastic/backup" folder and find or drop your save file there.

✉️ GBA games - mGBA, VBA: for most emulators, you can find the .sav file in the same folder as your .gb or .gba game file.

✉️ The easiest way to share the save file is on Discord - we will set up one thread for each team, named "Baton Pass challenge", and you can simply upload your save file there as an attachment. Please write down, in that same message, the name of the person who started playing on that save file, the person who should get to play after you on that save and how many badges you have obtained (you are strongly encouraged to decide with your team who should play after you, of course).
✉️ Another way to share your file, if you don't have quick access to Discord, is to zip it and attach it to a forum post in this thread - or utilize services like Google Drive or Dropbox.
✉️ After uploading your file like this, please use this Form here to add in all the relevant information. This form is crucial to keep track of everything that's happening during the challenge and to automatically keep count of each team's Challenge points. You will be asked to add in a link to either your PC post or your Discord message (right click/hold down on the message, then "Copy Message Link" - please don't just link the file itself or it might get downloaded by players from the opposing team). Don't worry, people from the opposing team should be denied access if they follow your message link.

Point Breakdown

So, how do you gain Challenge Points?
✨ Completing a segment! And most importantly, reaching the Hall of Fame! Points will be awarded as follows:

That is 30 points for obtaining 8 badges and 20 more for beating the League.
✨ Completing your task! The rewards range from 28 to 36 points depending on your trainer class.

We have to admit, the point conversion situation is a bit complicated this year. The gist of it is, the winning team gets around the same amount of GT points as what other long events typically will award. The runner-up team will get a varying amount of points that depends on the margin by which they lost.
✨ First, we determine the amount of GT points to award to the winning team. This depends on their Challenge Points tally (or Challenge Hype, if you will).

• If your team has an average of less than 50 points gained, per participant with at least one segment completed, you will receive 140 GT points.
• If your team has averaged between 50 and 75 points, you get the standard 150 GT points.
• Get an average of 75 or more points and you will get 160 GT points as a bonus for your effort!​

You can complete this challenge up to 3 times. This task is worth 11 points every time you complete it, for a total of 33 Challenge points.

Task: Teach 4 TM / HM moves to a Pokémon, then, with the help of your teammates, defeat at least two Milestone Battles and enter the Hall of Fame with that Pokémon in the team.
You can complete this challenge up to 1 time. This task is worth 32 Challenge points.

Restriction: You can only catch the first Pokémon you find in each area (even if it's already been caught in your current save file). You may retry the capture as many times as you want, but it has to be the same species of Pokémon as the one you first met.
Task: Right before a Milestone Battle, if you have at least 3 times as many Pokémon in your team and box as your opponent will use (Trial battles always count as 3 Pokémon): choose an amount of Pokémon in your team and box that is 3 times as many as your opponent will use, then move them to a separate box. Randomly choose one third of those Pokémon, and use only them in your Milestone Battle (so that you will have the same amount of Pokémon on hand as your opponent). You may claim the reward if you manage to win the battle on your first attempt without using items in battle.
You can complete this challenge up to 3 times. This task is worth 11 points every time you complete it, for a total of 33 Challenge points.

Task: Beat a Milestone Battle with at least three Pokémon that can be caught in the first 5 areas you can access at the beginning of a game (both towns and routes will count). Your Starter is NOT eligible for this task. You may only claim rewards for this task if you're playing a segment on a save file where 4 or more badges have already been obtained.

Any Pokémon in your team that does not participate in battle will not be banned, meaning you can freely use HM slaves.
