Hack of the Week 2010

By now, the rule has been the fact only people with at least 30 posts are able to vote. If a poll method was used, people could make new accounts and vote for their own hack that way.

Besides, the ones who vote, should be able to give some arguments to the hack they vote.

"Nobodies" (pokemon players from youtube, people who join here to ask how to play a hack that's not released etc.) will likely vote for the hack that they think has best graphics and don't look at the hack as overall. Hacks don't have that much to do with graphics really.

I prefer myself hacks with scripts made from scratch to hacks that have nice graphics and "new scripts". And, I don't think I'm any exception in this issue.

Define "nobodies". Because honestly that sounds to me like your saying only certain people have the rights to vote for the hack that they like.

By certain I basically mean, the people have been able to vote until now, should only be able to vote in the polls too.

Too much fuss over nothing really important. You're actually trying to make Hotw look official, with mods interfering and such.

I say close it, giving people one more reason to make their hack appealing and not actually qualified is unnecessary.

So.. wassup with HOTW? Is it still goin on? Lets try to keep it going! My new hack thread just started, link in my sig.

I agree entirely with Poster. To be honest, HotW has always been around simply just to be an award. "Look, I have something to fill the awards section on my hack thread!" And SnapTime's post really exemplifies that; all HotW is is a way that new hacks can warrant mention. But now there are so many winners (and so many hacks that really never went anywhere) that the award has lost any sort of meaning behind it. Now, if you win HotW, you're just one of over a hundred. It was cool at the beginning, but honestly HotW has gradually become something unnecessary and I think it needs to be cut.

The reason why HOTW isn't really worth it anymore is because people are voting for hacks that are best out of the rest, and not voting for them as hacks. Generally the votes are for "nice tiles" or something, which, nine times out of ten, the hacker themselves didn't even make. I agree that HOTW has reached it's saturation point - well, it reached it some time ago. As Vrai & Poster have said, HOTW is just a way for new hacks to get "recognised", though most don't even bother visiting HOTW anyway, so it's kind of useless.

Then how about we start something new, with similar, but different rules?
Like a progressing hack competition. Not necessarily weekly but there will be designated dates every two-three weeks?

I'm against that idea altogether. You don't need to win some sort of competition to prove that you're good. Just prove it through your hack.

I agree, there's no need giving away an award to a hack every week or two, just so that people will think your hack is good. You need to prove that your hack is a good one through real effort and creativity.

Something that we could do instead of HOTW is make a thread where we highlight the new hacks that seem to have some potential. This gives new hacks the attention they want, without the pointless award.

I agree with this, or at least if the ROM Hacking Newsletter returns (if it isn't still around) had a "new hack" section that had a review of a new or upcoming hack as a bit of promotion for the new hacks.

Advertising new hacks doesn't sound like a good idea to me. Plus hack owners could bother the people and say stuff like: "Put my hack up there!" and other annoying stuff, just to get hacks to be on the New Hacks thread. I know you said hacks that have potential, but they can still bother them with visitor messages. Plus how hard is it to just go to the Progressing Hacks forum and look at some hacks?

edit: quoted for truth

Again, I am against the idea. It will go to the point that if someone's hack is not included on the thread, they will beg to be on it. It'll go so far that eventually every new hack will be on there, and then it'll be like a summarized version of threads. I'd rather go through and read threads that just catch my eye.

We don't need anything to advertise new hacks. If a hack is good, people will talk about it, and eventually it will become popular.

How about a new hack rating thread? instead of choosing one winner and giving an award, you could post your hacks summery, or there could be links to the newest ones like on HOTW, and then in the comments instead of voting, they rate your hack and explain why. That way it takes out the competetive figure. Also, the reason I wanted HOTW to continue in the first place was not to get attention to my hack, I can get that easily if i try (I'm CEO of two popular entertainment channels on youtube) I wanted it so that I get a better idea of how im doing compared to the other newer hacks.

Why don't people rate the hacks on their thread, then? Competition isn't really necessary; we already have HotM and HotY.

Thats my point, we dont need to compete, but its nice to see how your hack COMPARES with the others.

Just to provide some quick input:
I do agree that a "new hacks showcase" kind of thing is really unnecessary, but to appease both sides of the issues, what if there's just a general hacks discussion thread (or is there one and I'm crazy? XD)? There, people can discuss the posted hacks (new or not), comparing them to one another, say which ones are their favorites, etc.

I still don't know if it's really necessary, but it's just an idea that I thought I'd point out.

There is a ROM Hacking Discussion thread that I would assume could be used for a similar purpose but I would think that if someone wanted to read about a hack, they would go to the thread and read about it for themselves. That way, they'd be able to form their own opinion and everything.

I don't think it's necessary at all.
