Hoenn: too much water?

    It's no secret that the Hoenn region has a lot of water. So much that, in 2014, IGN gave Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire a 7.8 'too much water' review, which is still a meme among fans today. Once you near the 7th gym, there is a lot of surfing to be done and many trainers across the vast waters to battle.

    So what do you think? Does Hoenn have too much water, or did you not mind?
     
    I love water and I love Hoenn for that too lol. I won't lie, playing pokemon Emerald I barely noticed there was too much water, but now that it has been pointed out I still don't mind at all. Tbh after Sinnoh, Hoenn is the region I had more fun exploring. I loved the diving part and it was one of the most interesting in the whole series. So, I m not denying there's too much water, I just didn't feel like it was that bad and tbh I like Hoenn the way it is. So yeah, I don't mind the water.
     
    Depends on whether or not your replaying it multiple times imo.
    A single or occasional playthrough with months between and it's fine imo. Didn't even notice it originally.

    If you're running through the games multiple times in a short time.... like I did to get 4 Deoxys to have it in all their forms... yea the water part started feeling too lengthy on the last two runs rofl
     
    As someone who has never been a fan of water areas, yeah, it feels that way. Not only because of the big amount of surfing and diving, but also because you spend a lot of the late game battling Water type mons due to the many swimmers and fishermen. Also the Hoenn dex is a bit too biased towards this type, and it gets even worse in Emerald with Steven being replaced by a Water specialist champion.
     
    I replayed RSE so, so many times and never got tired of the water. This was on an actual game system too, so there were no fast forward options. I just always had a lot of fun and never minded having to surf/dive a lot.... but I can see how others would. It's very vast! I am probably biased aha. D:
     
    It was only annoying in ORAS when I already had a complete team by then, bcs I had to spend a bunch on Repels lol. I wanna explore every area, but it sucks when every tile has the chance for a wild encounter :p
     
    Yes. Hoenn has too much water. It was a chore imo.
     
    I loved diving! It got frustrating at times, especially because I don't have the best spatial memory. But I honestly miss it.
     
    I like the theme behind it. Since the story was about expanding the sea/ground it makes sense that it is reflected in the area of the region being comprised of equal amounts of ground and water.

    In practice it didn't really work out, though. Water is just too specialized in what it provides. It's actually a recurring theme of the series. They try really hard to make the water more accessible. But ultimately it lead to just having to carry around more Water type HMs than anything.
    As neat as an idea diving was, it ended up being just another Water move that you only needed once for the story.

    I wanna say it wasn't too much water. But the amount clearly didn't do the gameplay any favors. You can only cross so many water routes before they become boring.
     
    I was never a lover of water areas, but I think that given the setting and the theme of the game it's not bad, although I must admit that many times I got annoyed by encounters with swimmers and got lost more than once... It's a lot of water, yes, but in the end it goes well with the game
     
    Personally I didn't really mind all the water. It was for the diving mechanic after all, which was fun. But sometimes it feels like the wild encounters on the sea are just too high.

    Except when you're actively looking, then it's like everything is deliberately avoiding you.
