I've never, ever been able to appreciate rap music. The closest to acceptable I've come to find it is comedy rap or passages in Linkin Park songs, I think.
Do you agree, or not?
If not, is there anything you can do to try to convince me otherwise? :)
rap is. bad???????? what......we're going to sit here and ignore kendrick lamar, megan thee stallion, cupcakke, childish gambino, tyler the creator, (early) eminem, outkast, lauryn hill!!!!!!! idk what you're listening to lol. i remember the "rap is crap" tyrades of the 2000's during the crunk/bling era but like. there's genuinely good talent there...so much you can't just write it off as bad. yeah there's also bad shit but literally every genre comes packed with talent and crap. i think it's more reasonable to say a certain genre just doesn't appeal to you rather than it's bad. it appeals to a lot of people even if that group doesn't include you.
i mean like idk what your music vibe i don't consider myself great at recommendations like not even everyone i listed there i could say i'd recommend to you like. what do you Like bc there are plenty of rappers that take influence from other genres to create this nice Blend that might be more palatable for you.
Seconding Childish Gambino, Kendrick Lamar, Eminem and Outkast. I'll also throw in NF as well as Tech N9ne, Krizz Kaliko, Ces Cru and Prozak (just about everyone signed to Strange really lmao). Logic is pretty good too. Kanye used to be good and the little I know of Jay-Z is solid too. Oh and Kid Bookie's pretty interesting.
A lot of the mainstream rap is legitimately bad, I'm not really a fan of the artists who do nothing but talk about drugs and partying and hyping themselves up, but there's definitely some legitimately great content out there if you're willing to look for it, with some actual depth. Plus, like Sydian says, loads of artists who take inspiration from other genres.
mumble rap is bad. most every other part of rap is good. to throw out just a few names; Tech N9ne, NF, Childish Gambino, TTC, Joyner Lucas, the greater majority of the late 90's - early 00's new york underground scene. And that's just mentioning the English speaking rappers. There's a lot of German rappers I've started to enjoy as I explore more as well. saying that all rap is bad really just points towards you not having given it a proper chance.
and this coming from someone who used to listen exclusively to metal. maybe not every artist is for you, and maybe not all the themes are for you. but i guarantee that if you spend a few hours looking you'll find something that you can vibe with.
i can appreciate good rap. my definition of that is those with good stories, good flow, no slurs, & no reliance on slurs/repeating words over and over for rhymes. it ain't that easy makin those kinds of pieces.
so guys like Eminem, Notorious B.I.G, MF Doom, etc. are pretty cool in my book. those be the only ones i listened to though since rap isn't one of my fave genres. i'm sure there's WAY more.
alright riki i'm determined to get you at least one rap song you like so tell me what rap songs you Don't Like and also what you look for in music like what songs/artists do you like. what kind of lyrical content appeals to you, what genres and sounds appeal to you. i'm gonna find you at least One i don't consider rap my strong point or anything but now i'm taking this as a challenge lol
i have been thinking way too hard about finding a song for you lol anyway...
lgbt - cupcakke
this is a fun track and it's honestly just So Good to get uplifting lgbt rap songs. to my knowledge, cupcakke is not lgbt herself, but she is a huge ally and this isn't her only song to show support. i have seen her in concert (remember those) twice and this one always gets the entire audience jumpin. under normal circumstances i wouldn't recommend cupcakke to you bc her songs are very sexual but this one is too good to pass up.
swimming pools - kendrick lamar
you didn't say anything about alcohol................fr tho it's a good song and if anything i think the chorus is really nice and catchy. i also want to mention this isn't an alcohol positive song it's not say yeah go drink but if you pass on it that's fine
thriftshop - macklemore & ryan lewis
it's catchy it's funny it's got good bars and it's honestly just a good time you might have even heard it already it's literally just bragging about the cool shit you can get at a thrift shop. can't hold us is also a fun song.
country grammar (hot shit) - nelly
i am recommending you nelly in 2020 bc country grammar is still a good ass song lol if straight rap puts you off then i think you might enjoy the sing song-y flow of nelly's early stuff.
wozard of iz - the avalanches
i mean i could make a case that you want the whole album for this and not just this song but i think it's good lol it's more abstract w some weird trippy samples and it gives me some weird mental images. danny brown is rly good on this one and his voice might be an acquired taste but i think it really works here. i'm mainly throwing in this one bc idk what kind of rap you've heard and dislike so i wanted to give you something that doesn't sound like the mainstream that i assume is what you've heard and dislike.
angels - chance the rapper
last one lol this one is catchy and gets me boppin right away!! puts me in a good mood makes me feel like i am never alone, even tho the second verse does lead off w some sad realities.
i hope that at least One of these is enjoyable to you. i am by no means a rap expert, i consider myself just a casual listener of the genre and i mean i like some really bad and stupid shit sometimes so like lol you can take what i suggested w a grain of salt here and none of this is even current this is me going through my entire library and just trying to find you a decent mix of fun/catchy stuff. i could probably find more but like i know when people give me stuff to listen to i am like ahaha yeah okay and never listen so like. lmfao

Love the lgbt song 😄 just a hella catchy tune and cool rapping.
The swimming pools... yeah that's dark and just. Too r'n'b for me too. Shouls have mentioned that too, but monotonous rapping to an r'n'b beat instantly turns me off lmao. This kinda thing I have trouble calling music ahah.
thrift shop is a fun tune but it says something that the only part I like is the chorus.. where they aren't rapping.
hot shit - well i do appreciate the singsongy style :) but the song itself just drones on and doesnt go anywhere. i can't listen to this and enjoy it, I think.
haha i legit like the wozard of iz more than most stuff here 😂 i guess i need me a fun tune. it's more similar to the weird lo-fi shit i usually listen to too.
angels, i do appreciate the fun way he raps! it's much easier to listen to than some other stuff. the overall beat has me bored in under a minute though.
in summary: you succeeded haha, I like at least one of these songs ;D thank you for the effort aaaa
Prozak, boring rap but nice tune. Idk if i'd endure the rap just to listen to the rest of it.
tech n9ne oh wow i actually like this rapping part o: he's good (i think?) actually puts emotion into it and yeah. nice!
therapy session, yeah there's just too much of the elements i can't stand here, sorry.
same with eminem's beautiful. it doesnt get me going and enjoying music listening to rap about their rough life. it's great that they have an outlet like that and i bet many can relate but. i don't need that.
adhd was actually great. an actual melody etc. so thanks! you too made me like a couple of songs 😄
i also did realize there are a couple of rappy songs i have liked in the past! look:
after listening to the lgbt song i also wonder if i might have an easier time appreciating feminine rappers?
i ALMOST recommended hey ya LOL but i was like nahhh that song is so big they surely heard it and it's probably on the list of rap they don't like.......rip..... i'm so glad you liked wozard of iz tho lol i haven't listened to that album in a long long time to be able to say i recommend it or not though.
also yes yes lizzo is amazing!! i can't quite recommend cupcakke entirely but she does have some genuinely good and uplifting tracks like biggie smalls and crayons and some outlandishly fun songs like cartoons. i was also going to recommend lauryn hill but if you're not into the r&b vibe then i guess not lol but i think doo wop (that thang) deserves a mention at the very least.
