sorry for the horrible thread name

Uh I mean, yeah. In the Pokemon games, you can nickname your Pokemons.

Some people nickname their Pokemons because that makes them unique, or just because it's cooler. So, this is a pretty simple question: What do you think of nicknaming your pokemons? Do you nickname your Pokemons? If you do/don't, then why?

I love nicknames. I get attached to my little pixel friends when they have names. Not having them just makes the playthrough less special for me. I sometimes go with naming themes (my French Silver team is named after flavors, spices, etc) but other times, I don't. Just whatever comes to mind for that particular Pokemon. I tend to name even the Pokemon I don't plan on using as well. idk Anything is better than NINCADA or something. :P I'm such a stickler with names that I didn't get ROCKY in GSC because of that name. I'd rather wait til Union Cave to get my own and name it something less stupid. lol

I tend to like giving the Pokemon in my teams nicknames. I always give my team members nicknames that follow a theme. Here are the themes I have used for my teams, along with which game, the leader of each team, and the Pokemon species of the leader:
Star Wars Republic Commando Squads (Game: Blue, Leader: Delta, Pokemon Species: Blastoise)
Decepticons (Game: Soul Silver, Leader: Galvatron, Pokemon Species: Feraligatr)
Star Wars Sith Lords (Game: Sapphire, Leader: Revan, Pokemon Species: Swampert)
World Leaders (Game: Platinum, Leader: Napoleon, Pokemon Species: Empoleon)(I have heard jokes about the nickname)
Legendary Weapons (Game: White, Leader: Durandal, Pokemon Species: Samurott)
Anti-Heroes (Game: White 2, Leader: John Rambo, Pokemon Species: Samurott)
World War II Ships (Game: X, Leader: Enterprise, Pokemon Species: Greninja)
Star Wars Jedi (Game: Alpha Sapphire, Leader: Luke, Pokemon Species: Swampert)

I did in gen 1 then didnt in gen 4 and 5 but since Gen 6 ive started naming again.

I try and name them something fitting but from some interest of mine which could be literature, film, TV, or some other reference.

    Recent names :

Mawile - Audrey (Audrey 2 was the name of the plant in little shop of horrors)
Tyranitar - Godzuki (Godzuki was the little sidekick monster in the old Godzilla cartoon)
Scizor - Scigourney (the aliens from the film Aliens are referred to as bugs and the lead actress name was sigourney so i mashed them up)
Sableye - Gremlin, just because it fit him. I was very close to calling him stitch though.
Tyrantrum - Grimrock (Transformers Grimlok and hes a rock type..)
Raichu - Faratay (Electric for Faraday with a t to make it rodenty)
Dedenne - Fairatay (See above but with added fairy!)

/cringes at the amount of times the word 'Pokemons' is in the first post
no sorry it's fine, just a pet peeve of mine xd

    in any case
i always nickname my Pokémon! even ones i only catch for Pokédex completion, i still give them a name. it's usually very mundane names though, ones i come up with on the spot, simply because they sound like the Pokémon's name or something. like i remember calling my Pansear 'Sean' just because.
for Pokémon on my team, i do give it some more thought... but i never really follow a theme. i just give them names that i think fit them as Pokémon, and the personality that i imagine they have. for instance, my Sableye is called Chester because his smile and (imagined) mischieviousness remind me of the Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland. and i always name my HM/Pickup slave Zigzagoon Scott, because he's my 'mascot', and a 'scout' for items to pick up, haha.
i should say i never nickname Legendaries though. it just doesn't seem right to.

I used to name my Pokemon after foods, or fruits/desserts to be more specific because they sounded cute (with some exceptions). My Raichu was named Lemon, Sylveon was named Strawberry, Mienshao was named Brownie and so on. Eventually I stopped since it bothered me having some Pokemon nicknamed and others not at all (took a while to think of names for everything I capture) and left them as-is. Especially since we don't have those ugly ALLCAPS names anymore high five. Now I can keep them without being bothered. <3

I used to nickname all of them when I was younger. Now I'm older and not quite as creative, and I can't for the life of me come up with good nicknames so I usually just leave the Pokémon as they are.

I used to give all my Pokémon terribly nicknames lacking inspiration in my first games, often named after the animal or object they represent, things like Flyer (Starly), Mantis (Scyther) and Batus (Zubat). Later I gave more random names that often didn't make much sense. Nowadays, I don't nickname my Pokémon, aside from my main team in challenges (often after the challenge), HM slaves (names like HM Boss, Fielder or Sea Master, which sound a lot more impressive than your lv6 Zigzagoon and Tentacool actually are) and Pokémon I bred for movesets or EV trained, which I give human names.

I gave only one pokemon a nickname. In Black 2, my Snivy was named Ramses. No explanation.

Oh and two yars ago, I started a game on Pokemon Red and I nicknames all my pokemon, because when you play with them in Pokemon Stadium, they change color, and I wanted to try it. I don't remember the nicknames tho.

I have only nicknamed my blastoise in firered. And I'm embarrased to tell its name.

A bit off-topic (so forgive me on this!), but this reminds me of how I used to always lowercase my name and every other NPC's name was uppercase, so it made me feel incredibly awkward. ._.

at first i would do this too, go against the game and name myself and my Pokémon as you normally would, so with only the first letter capitalized. but at some point it started to bother me that my name and my Pokémon's names were the only ones different from the rest of the game and would stand out weirdly as a result, so i actually ended up putting my names in allcaps from then on too.

still i'm so glad this issue has been resolved in the latest games and now i can just name as normal!

I like having the option to do so, but I rarely do. I usually can't think of anything creative, and if I do I usually end up wanting to change it in the future to something else. It's easier for me to just not nickname them anymore haha.

Lately I've been too lazy to think of good names, and I've sort of burnt out on it. I was using food nicknames for all of Gen V and XY, but I stopped in ORAS. I tried a flower theme for ORAS but it didn't stick, then I tried a theme based around my favorite cards from the TCG 'Cardfight!! Vanguard' but that didn't stick either. :x

So currently, no nicknames. I'd like to be able to think of some new themes though, but I just can't really think of anything. Gods/goddesses and astrology-related nicknames are usually pretty cool, but they're so overdone by other players I can't be bothered lol. Same with Japanese names.

I'm SURE that nobody cares, but I just want to show off some of my recent name schemes that I've had in my Pokemon games, lol.

That's all I can remember off the top of my head for now. n__n

I would try to nickname Pokemon when I was really young, but I would always get sick of the nickname quickly and change it back to their regular name. I haven't tried to in years

I always name my starter Buddy. I'll also name other Pokemon if they're special in some way or dear to me. I don't do themes cuz I know I'll change my mind down the track. Two names that I really like are Hetty for my shiny female Heracross which is after the pink vacuum cleaner and Fondue for my Furfrou which is after the dog in the Rhythm Thief game.

I used to hate the idea of nicknaming pokemon but now it feels weird not to so I always do! Usually I just go with a nickname that I think is fitting, but sometimes I'll do themes like characters from a certain book series, show, or game. Or sometimes I'll just do random noun generator and see what pops up :D

I'm someone who's extremely lazy with coming up names, so yeah I don't nickname stuff. I once attempted it in Ruby but was a bit unhappy with what names I picked so yeah, ditched the whole idea in the end.
