Mind Read the Room Ralts Large 2.png

Created a survey-type game about your experiences and thoughts about Pokemon. Hands out points based on how well you predict how your fellow competitors answered. Wins by accumulating the most points after the results of all fourteen questions.

Split the questions into three sections: Yes/No Questions, Multiple Choice, and Free Response. Detailed the format for answers at the start of each section.

Please submit your answers and predictions via private message to Devalue. Accepts submissions until January 12 at noon Eastern United States Time January 17 at noon Eastern United States Time. Will reveal answers bit by bit from then on. Please refrain from discussing your submissions with others until submissions are closed. Feel free to ask questions by post or private message.

Note: Will not make predictions as the host. Answers these questions alongside all of you, however. Increases the number of responses. Improves the game.

    Yes/No Questions

Submits two things in this section: your answer and your prediction. Scores points by predicting what percentage of people replied "Yes" to the question. May choose between the following options for your prediction:
    - More than 50% Yes. Earns 2 points if correct. (Will not receive any points if it is exactly 50%.)
    - Less than 50% Yes. Earns 2 points if correct. (No points for exactly 50%, as above.)
    - More than 75% Yes. Earns 4 points if correct.
    - Less than 25% Yes. Earns 4 points if correct.
    - Even Split. Earns 5 points if an equal number of people reply "Yes" and "No". (Note: Guarantees an even number of votes. Will drop the host's answers for this section to make the total number of votes even, if necessary.)

Sample submission for a question in this section:
    Code:
    1. Answer: Yes.
    Prediction: Less than 50% Yes.
Means you have matched four or more digits in the Loto-ID. Believes less than half of all respondents have.

    _____________

    1. Have you ever matched four or more digits in the Loto-ID?

    2. Have you ever named your rival after a real person?

    3. Have you ever traded with someone else in-person?

    4. Did you use your Master Ball in the most recent mainline game that you played?

    5. Do you think Game Freak will adjust any type match-ups OR add a type in Generation 9?

    6. Do you prefer the three-dimensional models over the two-dimensional sprites?

    Multiple Choice Questions

Asks for your answer and prediction once again. Choose one letter option for your answer and one letter option for your prediction. Awards you 4 points for predicting the most popular answer and 2 points for the second most popular answer. (Scoring note: Will not give points for the second most popular answer if no one answered that.)

Sample submission for a question in this section:
    Code:

    Free Response

Requires several answers and predictions for this final section. Answer with as many individuals as the question requires. Submit the same number of predictions. Awards 5 points for predicting the most popular answer, 3 for the second most popular, and 1 for the third most popular. (Scoring note: Uses the same "no points for answers with no votes" protocol as before.)

Sample submission for a question in this section:
    Code:
    13. Answers: Pikachu and Eevee
    Predictions: Charmander and Squirtle
Expects Pikachu and Eevee to lead the charge of the Unova Let's Go games. Predicts the most popular choices by others to be Charmander and Squirtle.

    ___________________

    13. Creates two new entries in the Let's Go series. Covers Unova (Generation 5). Which two Pokemon do you think would grace the box art?

    14. Who are three of your favorite characters from the franchise? (Accepts any human character in any Pokemon game or the anime. Allows specific Pokemon, such as "Brock's Onix", but not simply "Onix".)

  • Oh man, it's quite unfortunate that only 4 people participated so far, with only two days remaining for the deadline. I don't think this thread gets enough visibility.

Also, imo, a game like this is worthy of becoming an event in and of itself, that could span a couple days. It gets proper announcements, stickied, and the winner gets a sparkly PC badge, thus gives more incentive to join :D

That's just my two cents though, what does Team Trivia think?

  • This does require a little bit of time to set aside, so I think it would be wonderful to possibly extend the deadline & maybe stick the thread to the top (will defer to PT mods on that though!) so more people see it. (b' ')b

  • I just sent my answers in. This game is a cool idea, it's something different to bring to trivia land, and the questions were fun to think about and an interesting challenge...how would others answer this?

This game could be recreated into a good event for the get together.

Shrugs. Expected roughly this much of a turnout (now at 5). Attracts only so many to Pokemon Trivia. May not play every game.

Balanced "Even Split" from the Yes/No section around this assumption. Would have changed it to "Contested" (40-60% Yes, including both endpoints) for 4 points for a larger group, most likely.

Very well. Defers to your greater knowledge of the forums. New deadline: Monday, January 17 at noon Eastern United States time. Adds a few extra days, including a full weekend.

Wondered if the number of questions would repel people. Avoided splitting this into multiple rounds of submissions. Results in too many people missing rounds. Becomes a contest of participation then.

Might pare down the questions to 10 (4 Yes/No, 4 Multiple Choice, 2 Free Response) in a future version. Leaves question marks like that to postgame feedback, however.

Owes the idea to Guesspionage (a Jackbox game). Resembles the Yes/No section, more specifically. Works a bit differently. Sends one person to guess how people answered a global (or audience) poll. Asks the other players whether the actual percentage is higher, lower, much higher, or much lower than the guessed percentage.

Adapted it for forum play. Could not replicate Guesspionage for obvious reasons. Lacks the means to poll tons of strangers on Pokemon questions. Swapped it to polling the participants themselves. Introduced Multiple Choice and Free Response for questions better suited to a different format.

Agrees on it being a good Get-Together event. Draws in a larger pool of players. Improves the polling aspect immensely. Serves as a good test run, though, if nothing else.

Reminder: Reaches the submission deadline in 48 hours from this post.

Started on more questions for a future round already. (Remains subject to change from feedback, of course.) Considering including one from this round, along with mentioning this round's result for fairness. Scrapped that idea. Skews predictions in one direction, most likely. Probably ends with everyone or no one getting points.

Cuts off submissions from this point. Needs to straighten out something on one question still. Happens to be the final question, though. Proceeds without issue for now.

Received answers from eight people. Excludes the host's answers for the Yes/No section, in that case.

Plans to announce the results for three questions every day. Schedules both Free Response questions for the final day. Without further ado...

    1. Have you ever matched four or more digits in the Loto-ID?

    Answers
    - 2 Yes: Sheep, Hyzenthlay
    - 6 No: Roni, Lycanthropy, Megan, VisionofMilotic, ReKoil, Starlight

2 Yes / 8 answers = 25% Yes. Means 2 points for players who answered "Less than 50% Yes". Yields nothing for the "Less than 25% Yes" crowd, unfortunately. Only hands out points for less than that percentage.

    Predictions
    - More than 75% Yes:
    - More than 50% Yes:
    - Even Split:
    - Less than 50% Yes: Lycanthropy, ReKoil, Hyzenthlay
    - Less than 25% Yes: Sheep, Roni, Megan, VisionofMilotic, Starlight

2 points for Lycanthropy, ReKoil, and Hyzenthlay. Burned the majority by a slim margin.

    2. Have you ever named your rival after a real person?

    Answers
    - 5 Yes: Sheep, Roni, Lycanthropy, VisionofMilotic, Hyzenthlay
    - 3 No: Megan, ReKoil, Starlight

5 Yes / 8 answers = 62.5% Yes. Pays out only to the more conservative predictors once more.

    Predictions
    - More than 75% Yes: Roni, Lycanthropy, VisionofMilotic
    - More than 50% Yes: Megan, ReKoil, Starlight, Hyzenthlay
    - Even Split:
    - Less than 50% Yes: Sheep
    - Less than 25% Yes:

2 points for Megan, ReKoil, Starlight, and Hyzenthlay.

    3. Have you ever traded with someone else in-person?

    Answers
    - 5 Yes: Sheep, Megan, VisionofMilotic, Starlight, Hyzenthlay
    - 3 No: Roni, Lycanthropy, ReKoil

5 Yes / 8 answers = 62.5% Yes. Doles out 2 more points to the 50% Yes crowd. Received a wide spread of predictions.

    Predictions
    - More than 75% Yes: Starlight, Hyzenthlay
    - More than 50% Yes: Roni
    - Even Split:
    - Less than 50% Yes: Lycanthropy, Megan, VisionofMilotic
    - Less than 25% Yes: Sheep, ReKoil

Benefits just Roni this time. 2 points there.

    Current Standings
    Hyzenthlay: 4
    ReKoil: 4
    Lycanthropy: 2
    Megan: 2
    Roni: 2
    Starlight: 2
    Sheep: 0
    VisionofMilotic: 0

    _______________________

Answered Yes to all three of these questions, for anyone curious. Would have been the lone prediction in More than 50% Yes for the Loto-ID question. Figured Wonder Trade popularity (and checking the daily number) would have caught enough people.

Spaced on pinging everyone yesterday for the start of results.
    Spoiler: One-time Quote Pings

Cleans up the Yes/No section today.

    4. Did you use your Master Ball in the most recent mainline game that you played?

    Answers
    - 1 Yes: Roni
    - 7 No: Sheep, Lycanthropy, Megan, VisionofMilotic, ReKoil, Starlight, Hyzenthlay

1 Yes / 8 answers = 12.5% Yes. Favors the riskier bet this time. Appears to be quite unwilling to part with the rare item. Cannot count on winning the Loto-ID, apparently.

    Predictions
    - More than 75% Yes: Sheep, Roni
    - More than 50% Yes: VisionofMilotic, Hyzenthlay
    - Even Split:
    - Less than 50% Yes: Lycanthropy, ReKoil, Starlight
    - Less than 25% Yes: Megan

4 points for Megan. 2 points each for Lycanthropy, ReKoil, and Starlight.

    5. Do you think Game Freak will adjust any type match-ups OR add a type in Generation 9?

    Answers
    - Yes:
    - No: Sheep, Roni, Lycanthropy, Megan, VisionofMilotic, ReKoil, Starlight, Hyzenthlay

0% Yes. A unanimous decision. Guessed a No majority on this. Expected a few Yes answers for Fairy getting taken down a notch, though. Seems not.

    Predictions
    - More than 75% Yes:
    - More than 50% Yes:
    - Even Split:
    - Less than 50% Yes: Lycanthropy
    - Less than 25% Yes: Sheep, Roni, Megan, VisionofMilotic, ReKoil, Starlight, Hyzenthlay

4 points for everyone except Lycanthropy. Just 2 points there.

    6. Do you prefer the three-dimensional models over the two-dimensional sprites?

    Answers
    - Yes: ReKoil
    - No: Sheep, Roni, Lycanthropy, Megan, VisionofMilotic, Starlight, Hyzenthlay

    1 Yes / 8 answers = 12.5% Yes. Yet another clear vote.

    Predictions
    - More than 75% Yes:
    - More than 50% Yes: Lycanthropy, Starlight
    - Even Split: VisionofMilotic
    - Less than 50% Yes: Sheep, Roni, Megan, ReKoil, Hyzenthlay
    - Less than 25% Yes:

Failed to capitalize on it, however, with zero Less than 25% Yes predictions. 2 points each for Sheep, Roni, Megan, ReKoil, and Hyzenthlay

    Current Standings
    ReKoil: 12
    Megan: 12
    Hyzenthlay: 10
    Roni: 8
    Starlight: 8
    Lycanthropy: 6
    Sheep: 6
    VisionofMilotic: 4

  • Interesting! I didn't expect so many others to avoid using (or outright forget about) their Master Balls like I did. I also expected a little more people to prefer the 3D models.

    Looking forward to the rest!

  • Damn, my predictions were... off, to say the least. I am honestly surprised that not everyone has named their rival after someone else at least once, haha. Nevertheless, seeing all these stats and numbers is super interesting!!

4 points for everyone except Lycanthropy.

Kicks off the Multiple Choice section next. Scores 4 points for predicting the most popular answer and 2 for the second-most popular.

    7. In which game did you first complete the Pokedex?

    Answers
    (4) A. On a Generation 1 through 3 game: Devalue, Sheep, Megan, Starlight
    (1) B. On a Generation 4 through 8 game: ReKoil
    (4) C. Never: Roni, Lycanthropy, VisionofMilotic, Hyzenthlay

Either first accomplished it early or never, for the most part. Might have foreshadowed this result slightly with the in-person trade question earlier. Tied between A and C for the most popular answer. Will not have a second-most popular answer for this question.

    Predictions
    A. On a Generation 1 through 3 game: Starlight
    B. On a Generation 4 through 8 game: Sheep, Lycanthropy, Megan, ReKoil, Hyzenthlay
    C. Never: Roni, VisionofMilotic

Bucked a lot of expectations. 4 points for Starlight, Roni, and VisionofMilotic.

    8. Creates a new entry for the Hoenn region (Generation 3). Follows someone other than the player character of the original games. Who do you want it to be?

    Answers
    (0) A. Brendan/May
    (0) B. Wally
    (3) C. Someone on Team Magma or Aqua: Lycanthropy, Starlight, Hyzenthlay
    (1) D. Champion Steven: Sheep
    (5) E. Lorekeeper Zinnia: Devalue, Roni, Megan, VisionofMilotic, ReKoil
    (0) F. Someone else

Chose Lorekeeper Zinnia as the top answer, with a Team Aqua or Magma member second.

    Predictions
    A. Brendan/May
    B. Wally: Megan, ReKoil, Hyzenthlay
    C. Someone on Team Magma or Aqua
    D. Champion Steven: Sheep, Lycanthropy, VisionofMilotic
    E. Lorekeeper Zinnia: Roni
    F. Someone else: Starlight

Bet hard on Wally and Steven. Did not pan out. Works out well for Roni, however. Walks away with 4 points. Nothing for everyone else.

    9. Designs Pokemon regions with inspirations from real-world locations. From which continent do you think the inspiration for Generation 9 will originate?

    Answers
    (0) A. North America
    (2) B. South America: ReKoil, Hyzenthlay
    (1) C. Europe: VisionofMilotic
    (2) D. Africa: Roni, Starlight
    (0) E. Asia
    (4) F. Australia: Devalue, Sheep, Lycanthropy, Megan
    (0) G. Antarctica

Chose Australia as the most popular. Seems like a good region to bring back Dive. Tossed two votes each at South America and Africa. Co-owns the second-most popular spot.

    Predictions
    A. North America
    B. South America: Hyzenthlay
    C. Europe: VisionofMilotic, ReKoil
    D. Africa: Sheep, Starlight
    E. Asia
    F. Australia: Roni, Lycanthropy, Megan
    G. Antarctica

Did not send people down-under like the last question.
4 points for Roni, Lycanthropy, and Megan.
2 points for Hyzenthlay, Sheep, and Starlight

    Current Standings
    Roni: 20
    Megan: 16
    Starlight: 14
    Hyzenthlay: 12
    ReKoil: 12
    Lycanthropy: 10
    Sheep: 8
    VisionofMilotic: 8

Shuffled the standings a bit. Congratulates Roni for a particularly strong showing. Scored perfectly in these three questions.
