[Challenge] Mono-Color Challenge

Update on Ultimate Monocolor Challenge (Black).

Update #2 on HeartGold.
  • Made my way to Mohagony Town and Lake of Rage, where I slew the Red Gyarados.
  • Talked to Lance and agreed to help out, then infiltrated the Hideout.
  • Defeated Petrel and Ariana to clear out the place, and got the Whirlpool HM from Lance.
  • Challenged the gym and beat Pryce rather easily.
  • Elm called about the Team Rocket Radio Tower takeover, so I went to deal with them.
  • Defeated Petrel again, then Silver in the Basement.
  • Proton and Ariana went down as well, then I defeated Archer to disband Team Rocket for good.
  • Went east from Mohagony Town through the Ice Path to Blackthorn City.
  • Trained a bit on the Mountain Road and explored Dark Cave a bit, then challenged the gym.
  • Claire was a tough fight, but Kuro prevailed in the end.
  • Did her stupid test and got the badge in the Dragon's Den, then got word from Elm about the Kimono Sisters.
  • Defeated them without too much trouble, then scaled the Bell Tower to catch Ho-oh.
  • Surfed east from New Bark Town to the Tojo Falls, then made my way to the Pokemon League, defeating Silver on the way.
  • Took on the Elite Four. Bruno was a tough fight with his fighters, as was Karen's Dark types, but the other two were easy enough.
  • Then it was time for the Champion, Lance. He was brutal, and I had to heal Kuro a lot to get through those Dragonite.
  • Eventually I was able to win after reviving Boss, who finished off Charizard to win.
  • Roll credits!

Ultimate: Maybe :p

I'll have to wait a bit, though. Emulator is playing up and I'm a noob when it comes to re-setting the sound and in-game footage.. I've pressed something wrong, the music and the video is all messed up and jerky.

I've completed HeartGold. My team consisted of Meganium, Politoed, Xatu and Tyranitar. I really loved this team, it had a nice coverage with some defensive dudes and some offensive dudes.
Anyway, Johto was over very quickly, and Kanto even quicker. After I was done with both regions, I collected numbers from Gym Leaders and rebattled them. I'm glad you can battle them as many times as you like when they're free, otherwise this would've been a pain. When everyone was Lv 65, I went to face Red.

Emerald down! Started off with Treecko, and caught a Lotad soon after. Other team members included Lileep, Tropius and Kecleon. I usually don't use this many Pokémon, which made this challenge so much more fun, since I wasn't as overlevelled as I usually am. Everyone in the team had their strong points, such as Sceptile and Ludicolo being powerhouses, while Cradily was more of a tank. Tropius was a Pokémon that I was thinking about dropping, because it wasn't that useful. In the end I decided to keep it, because with some better moves it made itself useable here and there. Kecleon was way better than I expected, and I had some fun with its Color Change ability. It's definitely a Pokémon I'll consider using again.

My team members were around Lv 51-52 when I entered the Pokémon League. Drake and Wallace were definitely the most annoying ones, but I prevailed in the end.

Update on Ultimate Monocolor Challenge (Black).

Final Update (#3) on HeartGold.
  • Spawned at home and flew right to the Pokealthlon to get a Dusk Stone.
  • Used it to evolve Boss into Honchkrow!
  • Went to Kanto on the S.S. Aqua.
  • Made my way to Route 7, waited until night, then caught Devil the Houndour.
  • Trained him up a little, he evolved into Houndoom!
  • Fixed the Power Plant and got the Expn Card, then woke up Snorlax. Caught him and named him Grumpy.
  • Boxed Blackie for good, and started defeating the Kanto gym leaders, starting with Erika and Sabrina.
  • Eventually Devil caught up level-wise to the rest of the team, and we finally defeated Blue without much trouble.
  • Took on the upgraded Elite Four and beat them, then defeated Lance after a long battle.
  • Grinded against the Elite Four until everyone was at L77, then used Rare Candies to get the team to L80.
  • Climbed Mt. Silver for the final battle against Red. Here's a video and play-by-play of the fight:

The Sinnoh section of my Green monocolor challenge is now over. I had a pretty easy ride all the way through, until I got to the Elite Four. Things really started to become complicated there, but Bronzong with its massive defense stats pulled through. It was definitely my most valuable Pokémon in this run, especially considering that it had Heatproof and that all of my other team members were part Grass-type.

By the way, I'll be playing White 2 instead of Black 2, so I can use Reuniclus.

Update on Ultimate Monocolor Challenge (Black).

I was going to play Ruby, but only Emerald has both Mawile and Seviper, even though I hacked in Mawile anyway since the first black Pokemon in Emerald is after the third gym.

Update #1 on Emerald.

Name: Black
Starter: Mawile

  • Used the A-Starter app to make Mawile my starter (replaced Treeko), and named him Cruncher.
  • Defeated May and her L5 Torchic.
  • Wow, Mawile only knows Astonish until L11, time to Struggle those Normal-types!
  • Defeated Roxanne pretty easily with Bite and Fake Tears.
  • Saved Peeko and met the Devon Corp President, then beat May again, thank God Mawile can learn Rock Tomb.
  • Hitched a ride to Dewford Town and delivered the Letter to Steven.
  • Brawly wasn't too hard after an X Attack since Cruncher has ViceGrip now.
  • Moved on through Slateport City and beat May again, Cruncher is getting a little overleveled now.
  • Beat some more trainers around Mauville City, then took on the gym.
  • Wattson was tough since Cruncher got paralyzed, but with a few healing items and an X Attack he was able to pull it out.
  • Went north to Fallarbor Town and caught Asmodeus the Seviper on Route 114. Redwall reference for the win!
  • Started training him up on trainers I skipped earlier, beat Maxie on Mt. Chimney, then hopped down to Lavaridge Town.
  • Taught Asmodeus Dig, and he barely soloed Flannery, that Torkoal is tough and Overheat is OP at this stage of the game.
  • Got the Go-Go-Goggles from May, then saved in the desert.

My Green challenge is now over, as I finished playing just a while ago. I had very much fun with this challenge, almost using a full team and trying out new Pokémon that I've been meaning to use for a while. Reuniclus was amazing, even in its previous stages. Garbodor was pretty good, but its ability Weak Armor was a hinderance sometimes, along with a pretty shabby moveset. Although, I was incredibly impressed of Basculin and its capabilities. I had no idea it could be so good. I'll definitely be using it again.

I abused the Lucky Egg ever since I got it in Mistralton City, and therefore I had a level advantage at the end of the game. Not a huge one, but it most certainly helped and was crucial at points, such as in the battle with Iris where some Pokémon survived with ~10 HP. I was supposed to have a video of the battle, but it was too long because of her Hydreigon.

My next color will be Gray. I'll go with FireRed, Crystal, Sapphire, Pearl and White 2.

We need some more people to post here! C'mon guys, jump in the thread!

Meanwhile, I have finished the Emerald portion of my Black ultimate.

Update on Ultimate Monocolor Challenge (Black).

Final Update (#2) on Emerald.

  • Started in the desert, where I caught Astrodoll the Baltoy.
  • Trained it up for a bit, then challenged my dad's gym in Petalburg City.
  • Norman wasn't too hard once I got past Slaking, Cruncher walls that gym for the most part.
  • Continued on to the water routes, and Astrodoll evolved into Claydol.
  • Went to Fortree City, where Astrodoll soloed Winona easily with Ice Beam.
  • Moved on to Lilycove City & Mt. Pyre, where I caught my final two team members: Evil Eye the Duskull & Marionette the Shuppet.
  • Started training them up on the trainers around the mountain, and entirely by chance encountered a SHINY SHUPPET!
  • Ditched my current Marionette for the shiny Shuppet, which I also named Marionette.
  • Grinded her up on some trainers I forgot to battle earlier and some rematches.
  • Went to the top of Mt. Pyre and got the Magma Emblem.
  • Infiltrated the Magma Hideout on Mt. Chimney, Groudon flew off somewhere, then I defeated Maxie rather easily.
  • Team Aqua was up to no good now, and I cleared out their Hideout next to Lilycove City as well.
  • Surfed to Mossdeep City, where I took on the gym.
  • Tate and Liza were tough, but I was able to defeat them thanks to all the coverage moves I had.
  • Beat Team Magma at the Rocket Center, then went diving for the Underwater Cavern, and Marionette finally evolved into Banette!
  • Defeated Archie easily with Cruncher, and Kyogre flew off to battle Groudon.
  • Made my way to Sootopolis, told Wallace about the Sky Pillar, then went there as well to awaken Rayquaza.
  • After Groudon and Kyogre calmed down, I took on the gym, and Juan was easily soled by Asmodeus' Giga Drain and Crunch.
  • Soon afterwards, Evil Eye evolved into Dusclops!
  • Beat some more trainers in Meteor Falls, then went to Victory Road, where I beat Wally easily with Astrodoll.
  • Made it through Victory Road without any problems to the Pokemon League.
  • Did some moveset finalizing and got everyone to L54 with Rare Candies, then took on the Elite Four.
  • Sidney was easily soloed by Asmodeus.
  • Pheobe was easily soloed by Marionette.
  • Glacia was tough, but I eventually pulled it out at the end with Marionette.
  • Drake was taken down by Evil Eye and Astrodoll's Ice Beam moves.
  • Finally it was time to face the Champion, Wallace. I did record this really tough fight, so here you go:

Update on Ultimate Monocolor Challenge (Black).

On to Sinnoh!

Update #1 on Platinum.

Name: Black
Rival: Barry
Starter: Turtwig

  • Defeated the first gym with Grotle easily, then got the Honey in Florama Town.
  • My trainer ID said that the Florama Meadow tree was a Munchlax tree, so I slapped some Honey on it and got Munchlax to appear!
  • Caught her and named her Grumpy as usual. All Munchlax spawn holding a Leftovers, which is awesome.
  • After some training, Grumpy defeated Mars with Return and Rock Tomb.
  • Got through Eterna Forest with Cheryl's help, and traded a Buizel for Charap the Chatot in Eterna City.
  • Charap quickly went over the L20 obeying level cap, but I managed to defeat Gardenia regardless with her Chatter attack.
  • Defeated Team Galactic and Jupiter in the TG Eterna Building.
  • Went down Cycling Road and through Mt. Coronet to Hearthome City, where I picked up Kuro the Eevee.
  • After a ton of Biking around, Wayward Cave, and fighting trainers I skipped to get to Hearthome, Kuro evolved into Umbreon!
  • While challenging the gym, Grumpy also evolved into Snorlax!
  • Challenged Fantina and won without much trouble, Charap is really powerful with Chatter right now.
  • Defeated Barry then went to Solaceon Town, where I caught Evil Eye the Duskull in the Lost Tower.
  • Trained him up to match my team at L30, then continued on to Veilstone City.
  • Took on the gym, and after Evil Eye defeated Maylene's first two Pokemon, Kuro took down Lucario with Dig.
  • I am saved on Route 214, looking for a Houndour.

Gray for FireRed is now over with. Hacked in a Magnemite in the beginning and caught a Rhyhorn later on. I just stuck with those two, they were a pretty good combo, and I didn't run into any problems. I thought Bruno was going to be disastrous, but he was actually pretty easy. The Champion was a complete joke, the only problem I encountered was Exeggutor. I have a video of the fight here:

  • Did a little EV training, then boxed Grumpy for my Waterfall slave Bibarel, and made my way to Victory Road.
  • Navigated my way through the giant cave and arrived at the Pokemon League.
  • EV trained everyone, did some moveset editing, then got everyone to L56-57. Defeated Barry at the League entrance as well.
  • It was finally time to take on the Elite Four!
  • Aaron was not too difficult, Charap was able to easily take down Heracross who was the main issue there. A team effort all around.
  • Bertha was defeated by a team effort as well.
  • Grumpy was able to solo Flint with Earthquake, mostly because she avoided a Will-O-Wisp from Flareon.
  • Lucian was a tough opponent, Alakazam defeated almost my entire team with Psychic and Focus Blast (didn't miss, ofc), but Devil was able to finish it easily after he ran out of Focus Blast PP.
  • Last up was the Champion, Cynthia. Here's a video and play-by-play of the battle.

Alright, just defeated Red on Crystal for my Gray challenge. He was pretty tough, I had to stall some of his Pokémon out of some moves before I could do anything against them. It was a team effort, but no one really stood out that much. I wish I would have used Steelix, but I can only blame myself for not making sure that I could evolve it before actually starting the game. Onix wasn't bad, but I feel like that extra power and new type really could have helped sometimes. Oh well, I tried to make the best of the situation, and it didn't turn out all that bad.

Start of Ultimate Monocolor Challenge (Green).

Well I'm playing a rock mono with Black 2 right now, so until I'm done with that run, I decided to start my Green ultimate on FireRed.

Update #1 on FireRed (Final).

Name: Green
Rival: Blue
Starter: Bulbasaur

  • Started with Bruteroot the Bulbasaur and swept the first three gym easily, evolving after Brock and just before the SS Anne.
  • Picked up Reaper the Scyther at the Game Corner, and the duo easily took down the rest of the gyms.
  • Took on the Elite Four after some moveset finalizing and a few Rare Candies to get them both to L64.
  • Lance was the only real tough battle, as we didn't have any real strong attacks for his dragons.
  • Finally I challenged the Champion, Blue. Here's a video of the battle.
