Places with cool names

In my hometown there's a street called Robinhood road that I used to live near. A friend visiting me from out of town was amused to see not only that we had a Robinhood, but several other references to the folk hero around the town. There's a Marian Lane closeby too, Sherif of Nottingham firestation, a Sherwood restaurant, Friar Tuck road, and probably some other fun ones that I forgot.

What spots with funky names do you know?

Sorry this isn't exactly 'on topic', but as a fan of the old Robinhood stories, I just have to ask. What about his partner Little John? Was there anything special named after him?

There is that hill called Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanahu!

Now, about peculiar names in my city, we have a handful like the blind alley of the Bibis, the avenue of the Interrogation Point (that made me wonder ^^), and a district which name, if translated to english, would be written "Gonewrong". But I have a favourite one, the Dragon Street!

There is! My town has a well-liked bar called Little John's Tavern, and the standing suit of armor in there was said to have been really worn by him. The logo at the entrance even remembered to put the signature quarter staff in Little John's hand.

I saw on Facebook that this pub had a clothing drive recently to help the needy- sounds like an action worthy of Robinhood and his Merry Men!

I swear I saw a "Victory Road" somewhere I've been before...

Canada has a lot of really neat names for towns and areas because a lot of them are of Indigenous origin. So we'll have places named Coquitlam, Saanich, or Mississauga, which all feel unique. Some of the directly translated names are really neat too, places like Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump or Medicine Hat.

Tsawwassen and Ucluelet are two places that are really funny to see people who aren't from my home try and pronounce.

Man, the UK is full of the most silly and funny names and it's great. Examples being Bishop's Itchington, Ramsbottom, Turton Bottoms, Wigglesworth, Scagglethorpe, High AND Low Ham. Honestly you could pick a small area on Google Maps anywhere here and just find the most crazy stuff.

Also we have things like:

Our own Canada (not far from where I live actually!)

I've seen signs for somewhere called Yeehaw Junction. Never been myself, but a friend told me that it's a really small place, barely big enough to be considered a town, and whatever place she visited there, there was a mannequin head in the corner of one of the bathrooms or something weird like that.

(Just looked into it some more- originally it was called Jackass Junction. Not sure which name I like better tbh)

My favorite street name has to be "Avenue of the Carolinas" which, naturally, straddles North and South Carolina at the Carowinds theme park on the border.

"Albert Pick Road" in Greensboro, North Carolina is named after a defunct hotel chain. The hotel itself still stands as a Quality Inn, and I've been there numerous times. I've had people ask me who Albert Pick was, lol

"Ashley Phospate Road" in North Charleston, SC is also an awesome name.

Sticking with South Carolina, you can visit Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and Switzerland without leaving the state. Similarly, my dad once stopped for the night in Scotland, Pennsylvania. And as a kid, we'd make trips to Greece (NY) every other week since it was the town/suburb directly north of us where all the malls, doctors, and car dealers were.

And for one last trip to South Carolina, there's an area known as "Point South" where we'd always exit the interstate to get to our vacation home. Reaching Point South meant we were almost ready to start our vacation.

Quoting my Christmas present from 2023 - a book called Interesting Facts for Curious Minds - it reads:

The town of Saint Louis-du-Ha! Ha! [Quebec, Canada] has the dubious distinction of being the only town in the world with two exclamation marks in its name. It's right ahead of Westward Ho!, England.

Westward Ho! was also named after a novel in 1855.
