Point taken.
But from what I've seen on my personal chatgroup of friends that I met during a live VGC tournament, I think it's natural for a community to slowly switch from its main discussion to the daily chit chats. My chatgroup first existed because we got close during a tournament, and so our first discussions mainly revolves around Pokemon. However, as time goes on it slowly switches into a daily chit chat. The main focus of the group being VGC Pokemon discussions isn't gone though, but it's just that it'll get a little stale after a while.
PokeCommunity isn't like other forums such as Marriland, Serebii, Bulbagarden or the like. We don't have a Pokemon fansite after all. So like any group of friends, the discussions will slowly shift into the off topic discussions. However, we still go to Pokemon discussions if we find any interesting topics to discuss.
Plus, each of our interests when it comes to Pokemon are different, so even if there's a new anime episode, new TCG expansion packs or new merch, not all of us will be interested. New games are the ones that can pull in the community back to the Pokemon discussions as that's the one common interest that we all have aside from ROM hacks.
And that's how I view PokeCommunity, especially on the most active users on the forums: we're just a big group of friends. The fact that its off topic discussions are really active shows it. It's also one of the reasons why most of the PC regulars from other big Pokemon forums tend to not come back to those forums as well.
