Pokémon Journeys
...Hack of: Fire Red US
Downloads: No releases
Hello, I'm FBI, formerly known as FBI Agent. I decided to make a hack about a week ago from this unexplainable desire to create a hack of an open world. I know some people enjoy Pokémon games for the peasant trainer to 8 badge champion experience, some to explore the world and others to catch 'em all. I wanted to make a hack which would cater to all of these audiences as well as remain positive for everyone else. There's dark organisations, gyms, capturing and plenty exploring to be done!
I'm slowly updating the engine, and upgrading graphics for now. My main focus is to finish the game rather than insert all 728 Pokémon or however many there are now. As someone who hasn't played a Pokémon game since Diamond and Pearl came out, let me show you what I think one should be like.
Story:
Tom, a Pokémon Hunter, was coming back come after one of his hunts when he discovered a young and injured child washed up at the shore. He decides to take the child home, and together with his wife are able to nurse the child back to health. This child is you. Several days later, you finally regain and the ability to move and clear consciousness. You go downstairs only to discover that the folks who took care of you had left the property for some shopping.
Here you are, in an unknown land, with no idea what's happened around you! How will you lead your Journeys in this mysterious land of which you have no memory of?
Features:
Spoiler:
Open world
The world is fully open to explore. You can go wherever you'd like from the start, and do whatever you want! Of course, there is a main story line, but there are many other stories to be told by joining other factions or doing your own thing. Have fun, explore, decide how you want to play the game.
[*]Join new factions!
There are currently Five major factions in the region, but a few smaller factions available as well. Joining factions each hav
e their own benefits, and each present a unique style of play and a different story going on in the region.
[*]Fame system
Get famous! Do things that give you fame, let your name be known across the region. Earn fame by defeating trainers, acending the ranks within factions, beating Gyms, helping the towns people and more! Towns people will randomly walk up and say hi to you :)
[*]Level generation system
Opponent levels are being generated currently by a very complex level generation system which takes into account oppenent Pokémon's stats, your level, difficulty selected and who you're battling. Allows for better level-curve balancing in the game. The experience gain system has also been modified too!
[*]Dexnav and empowered PokéDex
A functioning Dexnav as seen in ORAS. Yeah, the whole graphical aspect of it too, basically I really like the route scanner and the whole "tuning the machine" aspect of it all. I've decided to port it to FR with all of it's features intact. The PokéDex is slightly changed. The full Pokémon details are available once you see the Pokémon rather than capture. I think that makes sense if you're using a completed encyclopedia, similar to the anime!
[*]Perks system
Joining certain factions and repeating certain feats gives your perks. The Perks improve as you progress, and can be really creative like adding extra game mechanics to the overworld. You'll see.
[*]Difficulty Choice
At the start of the game you will be asked which difficulty you want to play. Playing in hard mode increases mart prices, forces set mode battling, influences the level generation system, and some other things. I may consider making a Nuzlocke mode and other changes to increase difficulty in the future. Obviously, easy mode is just the default difficulty.
[*]Double wild battles
Nothing that hasn't been seen before. I'm going to try and complete it, as no one has finished it 100%. Jambo51 was quite close, but apparently even he couldn't escape from the graphical bugs which exist!
[*]Trainer sliding (when I finish the pesky thing...)
I'm so close to finishing it. There's just one bug that needs squashing regarding the opponent Pokémon's refreshing.
[*]HM function changes and new field moves
I've decided to remove the HM dependency for certain field moves. Fly has been replaced by the flight master, Surf, cut and others have their mechanics for usage changed.
[*]Battle Frontier/Elite 4/Gyms
So there exists the ability to just do the main story line while getting badges and doing up the Pokémon League (which is it's own faction). Some of us like the 8 gym battle system. So be it, you can enjoy your Gyms, Elite 4 and Battle frontiers!
[*]Shiny Encounter chances adjusted to match current generations
Chaining has been introduced as well. You can now see how much your chain is affecting the wild shiny chances.
[*]A bunch of cool ASM routines!
There's a lot going on in the background. TM mechanic changes, Left and Right key functions have been remapped, an updating objective log, running shoes changes, ingame trades, capture exp, among other thing which would take pages to name and describe them all!
Have you got a cool idea for a feature to add? Let me know, if I like it, I'll try implementing it!
Screenshots:
Currently default graphics. I'm going to finish the game first, then add miscellaneous features like graphical enhancements, and new Pokémon. Graphics are kind of hard for me because I'm colorblind.Videos:
It's an open world. You do whatever you want, including running into the grass without a starter, like a maniac. If you find yourself in this situation, you'll be unable to do anything but stare the Pokémon down for a few second before being forced to run back home.
Spoiler:
If you're too high level you don't get exp. If you are the same level or at most 5 higher, you get normal experience. If you're lower level, you get boosted experience. The boost stacks with the trainer exp increase and the traded Pokémon bonus.
Spoiler:
I changed bed slightly. With the absence if your mother healing you, I thought this would be a good change for the game.
Spoiler:
So there's a faction called the Psychics. If you choose to become one, you'll gain some overworld perks. One of them is clairvoyance. You'll notice I pause the emulator inbetween, that's because the variables aren't set to activate it, so I have to manually set them in the memory viewer.
Spoiler:
Another overworld function from the Psychics. This one allows you to teleport 5 steps ahead if the block has the same permissions and height as the one you're standing on (so no jumping through mountains or off bridges). Again you'll notice I pause the emulator inbetween. It's because I'm setting the bytes in RAM which act as the switch to call the routine :P
Spoiler:
I might make more videos since in my opinion they show the features off better than any screenshot ever could. I don't know what the preference is however, do people like to see screenshots or watch short clips? This is more of a story, and gameplay driven hack than a graphical one which I could please people with screenshots. Again, I'm colorblind so graphics are a pain for me to do, pals especially :(
Progression:
Like 1%. It's really not very tangible, the game is going to be rather large with so many possibilities. I haven't quite pinpointed when I want to stop. I've absorbed a lot of knowledge these past couple years, and now I'm trying to release it in the form of a hack!
Spoiler:
Boken City: 90% (still need to finish Gym interior and polish up )
Route 1: 100%
Boken Forest: 100% (I might go back and add some faction events here)
Boken Cave: 100% (ditto above)
Route 2: 100%
Auqnata City: 40% (Finished the ASM and Mapping for the city, now to script)
