  • Pokemon Dungeon Escape

In this game players have to escape a dungeon playing as a Pokemon. The decision making is done solely by voting, so people get to decide which direction this Forum based Dungeon crawl will be headed! Whichever option gets the most votes is what we will be going with. I will withhold voting myself as I'm the host, but in the event of a tied vote will use my own vote to break the tie.

Each week there will be votes to determine what actions to take. These will be separated into multiple votes for the same room if applicable.
For example a room with more than 1 exit will have both a vote on what action to take in the room, as well as a second vote for which exit to take.
The vote for the Pokemon we initially start with will be up for two weeks so that people have longer to find the game before it really starts.

In the dungeon there will be items, obstacles and other Pokemon, both Hostile and friendly.
Friendly Pokemon can be recruited for the players' team if the requirements are met, but we can only have a total of 6 Pokemon on our team. Only 1 Pokemon can be active, but we can change our active Pokemon each time we leave a room.
Hostile Pokemon have to be fought when encountered. I will use a damage calculator to work out the damage done and received. By encounter I mean taking a path within a room that crosses theirs. Depending on how you navigate a room it can be possible to avoid a fight in some cases.

We can heal our Pokemon at hot springs, or by eating Oran and Sitrus berries. Status can be healed by berries and hot springs as well. A Pokemon that faints can no longer be used and is gone for good.
Leveling up Pokemon is accomplished either by knocking out opposing Pokemon or finding Rare Candies within the Dungeon.

Backtracking is possible in certain cases, such as for example if we don't get to recruit a Pokemon we want due to lacking the requirement for it's joining; once we do meet that requirement a backtrack option will be offered for it in the next vote.

The layout of adjacent rooms will be made visible, however we won't know what Pokemon, items or obstacles are in them until we enter them!
Presence of a hostile Pokemon will be either indicated at the room entrance visually or announced in text.

Edit, additional info posted later on:
Each Pokemon type is either helpful in dealing with an Obstacle, providing access to items or even rooms and shortcuts which other Pokemon would not be able to access, or gives an exploration bonus.
Obstacles can be dealt with just by having a Pokemon with the correct type in your party. Exploration benefits only work if the Pokemon with that type is the lead Pokemon.
A full list of Obstacles and exploration benefits is below.

    Obstacles:
-Fighting & Steel types. Can smash Rock Smash Boulders.
-Ground & Rock types: Can move Strength Boulders.
-Flying & Water types: Can cross a body of water.
-Ice types: Can cross Ice sliding floors freely in any direction without having to slide into things.
-Poison & Fire types: Can melt Cut Trees.
-Ghost types: Can enter areas closed off by solid walls within rooms. A screenshot from a PMD game that better illustrates what I mean here:
    Spoiler:

    Exploration benefits:
-Fairy and Dark types: Can detect traps and avoid setting them off. Works for the current room.
-Psychic types: Can detect any and all Pokemon in adjacent rooms.
-Grass & Bug types: Can detect berries in adjacent rooms.
-Electric types: Improved Line of sight. Can see what's in the first 3 rows/columns in adjacent rooms, not including the wall. Items and Pokemon alike.
-Normal types: Increases amount of hostile Pokemon in nearby rooms and increases Berry drops from hostile Pokemon.
-Dragon types: Decreases amount of hostile Pokemon in nearby rooms and increases item drops from hostile Pokemon.

    Items:

    Berries:
-Berry Juice heals 50 HP, but also heals any status.
-Oran Berry. Heals up to 100 HP.
-Sitrus Berry. Heals up to 250 HP.
-Aspear Berry: recover from being frozen.
    -Cheri Berry: recover from paralysis.
-Chesto Berry: recover from being asleep.
-Leppa Berry: restore a move's PP fully.
-Lum Berry: recover from any status problem.
-Pecha Berry: recover from being poisoned.
    -Persim Berry: recover from confusion.
-Rawst Berry: recover from a burn.

    Shards:
    -Blue Shards: buys TM's.
    -Green Shards: buys berries.
-Red Shard: buys evolutionary items for stone evos/trade evos etc.
    -Yellow Shard: buys 'other' items.

    Orbs, single use items:
-Blowback Orb: Knocks the targeted foe back into the wall behind them and they take 5 damage.
-Brushoff Orb: Warps targeted foe to somewhere else in the same Act.
-Cleanse Orb: Cleans any sticky held items and sticky items in the inventory.
-Invisify Orb: Party Leader becomes invisible and we can avoid all battles in the current room.
-Lob Orb: Inflicts 25% of the targeted foe's total HP in damage.
-Slumber Orb: Makes the targeted foe fall Asleep.
-See-Trap Orb: Reveals all traps in the current room.
-Totter Orb: Makes the targeted foe Confused.
-Trapbust Orb: Destroys all traps in the current room.
-Two-Edge Orb: Halves HP of all foes in the room as well as the Party Leader.
Orbs can be used from the inventory if you have them and don't need to be equipped.

Eggs can be hatched in two ways:
    1) In the party:
-Cuts the amount of required rooms in half.
-If there's a fire type in the party as well (the Fire type does not have to be the lead for this), the amount of required rooms is cut in half again, so 25% of the total required rooms.
    2) In the hideout:
-Multiplies the amount of required rooms by 1.5, so 50% more rooms to clear, aka 150%.
-Except if there's a Fire type at the hideout. In which case the normal amount of required rooms is used, so 100%

Pokemon Dungeon Escape - Opening Act

We start off in our safe corner in the Dungeon, tucked away from prying eyes and the conflicts of the Dungeon. It might be a snug little corner, but being trapped in this place against our wills is definitely not fun.
Once we have chosen our starter we will leave our hideout and head out into the room above to start our escape.

Which of the following Pokemon shall we start playing as?

    A) Poliwag
    B) Mareep
    C) Bounsweet
    D) Rolycoly

I vote for Poliwag. It can learn Water Gun, which can cut through corners; long range moves like Bubble and Bubblebeam; Hypnosis, to put enemies to sleep.

  • This is friggin amazing to have mystery dungeon here!!!! Let's feature this game 😃

A tough call, because i see value in all of the choices, but i will vote for Mareep. It's line has guided ships across the sea at Olivine City's light house, so i think it would be good at finding it's way in the cave, and leading the rest of the party to safety as our team grows.

  • Poliwag! Why? because I'm a gen 1 truther because he's the cutest! And with that cuteness we'll be able to persuade others to do our bidding help us out. Charisma runs are always the best!

  • Pokemon Dungeon Escape - Opening Act

One week left before we set out as our starter Pokemon. Latecomers can still join in and vote for the starter!
Currently the standing for the starter is as follows:
    A) Poliwag - 2 votes
    B) Mareep - 4 votes
    C) Bounsweet - 0 votes
    D) Rolycoly - 1 votes

In the meantime... every protagonist needs a name. And who better to decide that name than all of us together? Since everything is decided by voting, everyone is allowed to propose a name for our starter. We will then vote on all the proposed names next week.
You are free to split this up into a name for each starter option, in which case only the name for the winning starter will be used in the vote next week.

Additionally, a name for our motley group seems in order, so everyone can also propose a name for our Group!
Like for example The Escapists, Squirtle Squad, Turtwig Troupe, Blissful Blipbugs or the Young Croagunks, etc etc.
So you can propose a name for both our Starter Pokemon's name and one for our Group Name.

This week is just for nominating the names for our protagonist and our group. We will vote on the proposed names next week when we set out!

For the team, I propose Team Roundabout. Poliwag and Bounsweet have round bodies, and Mareep and Rolycoly too to an extent.

    • For Mareep: Mouflon. A type of sheep. Sounds like a decent name. Prefers that over the more well-known Aries.
    • Team Name (with Mareep starter): Magnum Ovis. A play on Magnum Opus. Stuck in the word Ovis, which is the genus for sheep. Liked it better than The Blue Sheep (or Black Sheep) and Sheeple.

  • In keeping with the lighthouse theme i think Wickie could work as a name, if Mareep is chosen. It's an old name for a lighthouse keeper. They were called "wickies" because they helped illuminate the space by trimming the wicks in the oil lamps.

For a team name? Mareep's Marauders. We are a bunch of misfits scavenging our way around, and i feel like putting some alliteration on it.

  • Pokemon Dungeon Escape - Act 1 - Chapter 1

The voting results for the starter are now final. The standing for the starter is still as follows:
    A) Poliwag - 2 votes
    B) Mareep - 4 votes
    C) Bounsweet - 0 votes
    D) Rolycoly - 1 votes

Our chosen starter is Mareep! We'll be starting off at level 5.

    Spoiler:

Now that we have our starter we ascend to the room above and talk to a friendly Pokemon who has been keeping us company.

After saying goodbye to Abra we take a look around the room and see a bunch of items scattered about. Several Pokemon must've passed through here recently.

We started as an Electric type. If an Electric type Pokemon is the lead Pokemon we get a Line Of Sight bonus and can see the contents of the first three rows or columns of adjacent rooms, revealing any items or Pokemon in those spaces.
Each Pokemon type is either helpful in dealing with an Obstacle, providing access to items or even rooms and shortcuts which other Pokemon would not be able to access, or gives an exploration bonus.
As stated already by Abra, the 'Rock Smash' Boulders can be destroyed by Fighting & Steel types.

Works for current room + adjacent rooms.

If there are any hostile Pokemon in an adjacent room they will be indicated as on the image above; by their type symbol and quantity, near the entrance to that room. The type could be either Primary or Secondary in the case of Dual type Pokemon. As you can see, there is a single hostile Bug type Pokemon in the room to our East. There appear to be no hostile Pokemon in the room to our South, but there could still be a non-hostile Pokemon there.

    1) There are various items within our current room. What should we do with them?
    A) Pick up all items we can currently reach.
    B) Pick up only the berries.
    C) Pick up only the Yellow Shard.
    D) Ignore all items and don't pick anything up at all.

    2) There are two ways out of this room. Which exit do we take?
    A) Take the East exit.
    B) Take the South exit.

Last week people could nominate names for our starter and our team. We shall now vote on them. Nominations are in the spoiler below.

    3) For our starter Mareep, which of the below names shall be it's name?
    A) Mouflon
    B) Wickie

    4) For our Group/Team, which of the below shall be it's name?
    A) Team Roundabout
    B) Magnum Ovis
    C) Mareep's Marauders

    Spoiler:

    5) Lastly, we can choose one of the below natures. What shall be our Mareep's nature?
    A) Naughty Nature (+ Attack, - Special Defense)
    B) Bold Nature (+ Defense, - Attack)
    C) Quiet Nature (+ Special Attack, - Speed)
    D) Bashful Nature (Neutral nature)

    • 1) A) Pick up all items we can currently reach. Never played Mystery Dungeon (or this forum game obviously). Wants to see how nasty traps are now.
    • 2) B) Take the South exit. Hopes for something better. Does not care about the Bug-type currently.
    • 3) A) Mouflon
    • 4) B) Magnum Ovis
    • 5) B) Bold Nature (+ Defense, - Attack) Would be okay with Quiet too. Moves quite slow already. Loves Bold natures too much in other games, though.

  • I'm really impressed by the effort you're putting into this, ReKoil! :o

    1) A) Let's pick up all the items, we might be able to save ourselves in a pinch or bribe someone! But it seems too easy...could an ambush be waiting?
    2) B) South exit, not that keen on encountering bugs at the moment.
    3) B) Wickie
    4) A) Team Roundabout
    5) B) Bold nature

    1) A) Pick up all the items. Not punished for doing it yet, so why not?

    2) B) Take the South exit. Will either be easy experience or a good party member.

    3) A) Help the Smoliv beat the Capsakid in a fight. Declines to do an evil playthrough. (Also likes Smoliv more.)

Better take as much as we can, as we do not know how long the trip will be!

    2B
I vote for the south path. There might be interesting things near the water...

    3A
Help the Smoliv, and teach this Capsakid a lesson in "niceness"!
