For Pokémon as in the general terms. Its to me, is a single player world. It's you after all taking on the hero's journey. A main series of events that you and you alone get to experience. But transition that to an online aspect. It becomes a shared world and yet its not.
For most pokemon games, seems to be encouraging single play. Or in the event its an online version. Its playing along side others in the shared world but, your still alone and that brings the question.
    What happens After?
For the actual games, well. Alot of people like playing by themselves. The story plot, the leveling. and that's perfectly fine. Its the choice. ( take the anime Overlord, Sword Art online, or Solo Leveling)
But for an mmo/online experience, while anyone can do that. You have the option to share that experience with specific group of close companions.
Sometimes your happy, having people around , as free thinking background characters. You know they arnt NPS, they are people just like you. But, there's no\little interaction. And others are happy to log in and see familiar faces waiting for you. The anime itself, really pushed the idea that the main character is almost always joined by other experiencing the adventure.
Its a fascinating topic I've been looking at. And wondering how "THIS" world will take on that idea. And what you all will do?
Personally. I do like the idea of Team work. Putting down a goal for the week or a raid challenge. People who are part of a shared world taking part in something greater themselves , saying "We did that together"
But maybe your the lone wolf type? Aiming to be the best at every aspect of a game, so you can enjoy the effort you put into it. so you can say " Im here on my own merits"
Its fully possible to go on the same journey, working towards a goal. But not together.

Share your thoughts on my little ramble...Thank you if you took the time to read it. *sips coffee..* And salute to those who share a response.

Yeah the anime absolutely pushes the idea of companions traveling together. I think they've tried to push that idea more in newer generations, especially X/Y and Sun/Moon.

I definitely see it as a sole adventure. Serves the atmosphere of "kid on a journey" a little more for me.

I definitely see Pokemon as a singleplayer experience that you can sometimes connect to other people's singleplayer experience, through stuff like battling or trading or raids or what have you. And I'm totally okay with that, I think that's the way I would prefer to experience an RPG. I think a large appeal of Pokemon is the social aspects of it outside of the games, things like this forum or playing things like the card game or something like Pokemon Unite with people (which are multiplayer by design) because whenever something like a new generation comes out I'm always so excited for the discussions. What we think of the new Pokemon or which ones we've caught or things like that. The anime does push the idea of multiple people on the same adventure but I don't think things like posting to a forum asking "What Pokemon are you going to catch?" is a different experience from that. We're still experiencing the same world of Pokemon with each other, but doing our own things.

Having a teamwork aspect to it is nice for those who enjoy it. I like the concept of raids for Pokemon and the idea that they gain more EXP when they aren't yours motivates people to trade and help each others out. But that's just not the kind of thing that appeals to me, I don't enjoy doing raids personally and when I trade with friends it's just to help each other with Pokemon we can't catch. I wouldn't ever really aim to be the best by myself unless there's a specific goal I want to accomplish like filling out my Pokedex, in which case I'll approach it like hunting for an achievement in any other singleplayer RPG.

In the context of something like an MMO, the only experience I have with them is Final Fantasy XIV, but when I play that I consider my friends and I to be one party engaging in the story together instead of a single main character (again, comparing it to the Pokemon anime) but if I'm not exclusively progressing through the story with my friends, I'll be playing alone in dungeons or boss fights with random people who I just happen to connect my game with because it's required, in which case I'll often just focus on doing my part in the fight, and won't think about those people again after it's over. Even though it's an MMO I consider most of what I do to be singleplayer, and don't consider the multiplayer aspects of it often. That might just be how I am.

Salute to you as well for making this thread! Yousoro!

I'm definitely the lone wolf type. I adore MMOs, don't get me wrong, but even when playing those I tend to be solo most of the time, and don't usually enjoy the hardcore end-game content because it often requires group efforts. But I also think a Pokémon MMO is the dream and it would be insanely fun, especially knowing how many friends I have that are into this series. Can't see it ever happening since I'm sure they'd be worried it would take money away from the main series (and it quite honestly would) but one can dream about an official Pokémon MMO still. :'D

There are definitely games I prefer playing in multiplayer if possible, most of those would very likely be ARPG's. If you can find a good group to play something like Titan Quest or Diablo or Torchlight with, it vastly enhances the experience imo. Though a bad group will definitely leave a sour taste

Pokemon has been taking some steps into multiplayer, but to me it's a single player game that occasionally forces me to go online to trade some stuff =P

I see Pokemon as a primarily single player experience that happens to have some multiplayer on the side. Sure there are online features; but all you're really doing is connecting 2 separate, single player worlds together; and you can still experience 95% of the game's content even if you never trade or battle with another person. It's not like Mario Party where you're missing out on a huge part of the experience if you only play with CPUs.
