Pokemon Types

    Ever see a Pokemon your first time around, without knowing its typing and instantly think, "Wow! Look at that awesome ___ type! I gotta catch it!" But then it turns out to be the opposite, or not what you expected.

    I'll get to the point, this thread is to talk about Pokemon that have types that don't really fit it, or that should have a type added to it.

    For example, (Keep in mind, I am a Dark type Trainer, so a lot of these examples will be of ones I think should be Dark)

    Gyarados; Water/Flying type
    Why? Why is it flying? It can't even learn Fly! Same with Scyhter!

    Seviper; Poison type
    Did most of you not think when you first saw this thing that it was at least going to be Dark typed? I mean, just look at it! It screams it!

    Shinx, Luxio, Luxray; Electric type
    Maybe it's just me, but, at the least Luxio and Luxray look like they should be Dark type to me.

    I could go on but, I'll save it for the discussion. What do you guys think? What Pokemon don't match their type(s)? Which Pokemon only have one type and should be dual-typed? Do you guys think GF should go back and re-type them, or just leave them as is?
     
    I think some of gen I's grass/poison types should lose the poison aspect. Oddish, Bulbasaur AND Bellsprout lines, seriously? Especially before psychic's nerfing, that only made them great punchbags. I can see why Oddish has it, but Bulbasaur and Bellsprout could have done fine without it imo. At least Bellsprout.

    Now, I'm of course not talking with a competitive battling mindset :p

    You could not be more right. A lot of Gen 1's Grass types could've gone without the Poison on it. Oddish I can see more, Bellsprout didn't need it, not through any of its evolution. The only one out of the Bulbasaur line I can see having/needing it is Venusaur and it works for it but, I could see it having better typing or just being good with only Grass as its type.
     
    Beedrill is another Kanto pokémon that really didn't need the Poison type. Gengar's line being Ghost/Poison was odd too - GameFreak really loved Poison pokémon in generation 1. Generally I don't have too many pokémon types to complain about, though I'd make an exception for basically every Normal/Flying ever. I guess it's OK if you justify it by saying "OK it flies...but that's not much of a description. Normal/Flying makes it clear it's a regular bird", but I'm not convinced by that logic ("OK it's watery, but that's not much of a description..").

    The only one I had trouble with until someone in Marriland forums pointed it out, even now I still have trouble. Its Dunsparce, I keep thinking its a bug-type, I learned its a normal type, yet my brains keeps telling me "its a bug!! type"

    Beedrill is Bug/Poison for a reason: it's based on bees, wasps and hornets, which are known to be poisonous.

    Gyarados is Water/Flying as a reference to the koinbori (carp wind socks) used to celebrate Children's Day in Japan.

    Seviper is Poison because it's based on a poisonous snake.
     
    When Gen II first came out I was so sure Lugia was a Water/Flying type because it's the "beast of the sea" and because it can learn hydro pump, and probably also because Ho-Oh is Fire/Flying, so I thought Lugia was the opposite.. Even after I caught it and used it in my Silver game I still thought it was Water/Flying.

    My mind was blown when I finally came to the realization that it is actually Psychic/Flying. To be honest, I still have a hard time coping with that for some reason. LOL
     
    Probably Palkia and Mawile. I didn't expect Palkia to also be a Water type....And I thought Mawile was a Dark type, only to find that it is a Steel type.
     
    Yes, it's really weird to see Regigigas a Normal type. Common man it lives inside caves or whatever that place is. It should be other than just a normal type. What I mean to say it should have a secondary typing, let's say a Fighting type
     
    When I first played 4th Gen, I often didn't know a lot about the new Pokemon's typings bar the ones that are evolution relatives of old Pokemon. The one that definitely deserves a mention is Croagunk and Toxicroak, which I thought was pure Poison at first but I reacted very weirdly upon discovering it was also part-Fighting. Also, like what JesterLegacy said, I thought Palkia was a pure Dragon-type but no it's a Water/Dragon-type.
     
    I've always thought that Luxray should be Electric/Dark just because it really looks the part. As for a few others I'd wish that some of the Normal/Flying types such as Pidgey, Pidove etc. were pure Flying type as well.
     
    I'm not particularly a Dark-type trainer, but the pokemon I think of first who fall into this category are ones that should've been Dark types - Luxray and Gothitelle.

    I didn't actually think that Luxray was going to be Dark, but that's because Shinx was actually the first pokemon I caught in the fourth gen, so I saw it evolve all along the way. But I figured out fairly early on that it should've been Electric/Dark. Gothitelle though - or rather the entire Gothita line - I actually believed was Dark when I first saw one, and I still think it should've been Psychic/Dark.

    On the other hand, I tend to forget that Drapion is Poison/Dark - I expect it to be Poison/Bug, like Skorupi.

    Huh... I wonder what would've happened if they'd made both of them Bug/Dark instead. There aren't any Bug/Darks yet... let's see... They'd demolish Psychics, Bug would fix Dark's Fighting weakness but it'd still be weak to Bug, since Dark is weak to it and Bug is neutral. Weak to Fire, Rock and Flying, since Dark doesn't do anything for those. That's about it really. Coming from Drapion, it'd lose the Ground weakness, but that's about the only change. No STAB on poison attacks, but poison attacks aren't particularly useful anyway (though its Cross Poison does hit pretty hard).... I think that would've actually been pretty cool.

    The first time I saw a Klink, particularly because it was in Chargestone Cave, I thought it was going to be Steel/Electric.

    I thought for a long time that Steelix was Rock/Steel - that Onix lost its Ground typing instead of its Rock typing.

    That's about all I can think of right off...
     
    I definitely agree that there should be less normal/flying types and some pure flying types. What I don't really understand is how something can be both a normal type and another type. I guess that has always sort of bugged me a bit.

    As for Gyarados, I've always been bugged by that flying double type. Not because I think it doesn't fit the Pokemon, but because it doesn't come with good flying attacks. All it really does for me, is make Gyarados a great target for my electric-types.
     
    When I was a kid playing Pokemon Silver I thought Forretress (I saw it all the time because of Koga E4) was Bug/Rock becuase its shells look like rock, especially in G/S.
     
    I once mentioned before that every Pokemon colored black should have an added Dark-typing. The way they distribute the typings is rather strange on some of these Pokemon. I have no clue as to why Scraggy is a Dark-type either, especially considering the fact that it has yellow skin. ~_~

    Apart from that, I agree with everyone else over their opinions. I also thought that Porygon2 and Porygon-Z would have the added steel-typing.

    Dark-type is actually referring to dark as in evil, rather than the color of the Pokemon themselves (if I recall, it's actually known as the Evil type in Japanese instead of Dark).

    That being said, my first instinct was that both the Luxray and Gothitelle lines were both Dark types, and since I didn't use either for a while, it was a little shocking to find out they weren't. On the flip side, it was until recently that I actually found out Crawdaunt was part Dark type. It doesn't really seem to fit, but I guess it's better than another pure Water type.

    The other Pokemon that always throw me off are Psyduck and Golduck. When you look at their movesets and even their names, you'd assume that their Water/Psychic, but in reality, they're pure Water types. I really wish they'd get around to fixing that, as I'd love to be able to use Golduck more often.

    Agree with you there. I have a Golduck on my FR team now and it kind of sucks that it can't double as a psychic type very well. But I kind of use it's physical strength much instead ;) But yeah, even the anime made it really look like a psychic type, which was weird.
     
    Arbok should have been Poison/Ground.

    A lot of dragon type Pokemon aren't even dragons.
    Vibrava should be a bug. Flygon should lose that ground typing.
    Gible, Gabite, Garchomp, Shelgon and Bagon don't look like dragons.

    Charizard is the most dragon like Pokemon, but it doesn't have the dragon type.
