Chit-Chat: Random Writing Nonsense

same here tbh. I started poking around in here and then suddenly I had my story planning notes from november on my desk and the first 500 words i had written for them like what how did this happen

im never actually going to make any progress but hey at least i look at it like twice a day

i'm not even far enough into it to call it started. but i really like the idea and keep thinking about it.

Always happens to me haha, I really want to go back to some things I've started someday. I've also hit a roadblock already. I'm really bad with naming :l

Haha I used to do that. I think in my case it was because I wanted to give everyone a ~meaningful name~ or whatever and then I eventually was like "um wait parents just name their child something they like that's probably a name from their culture it's fine". Though I still occasionally scroll through name lists trying to see which sounds best with my character's base personality.

Mislead your readers (if any) and name them something that goes against their character, but not in a cliche way where it's just the opposite o3 o

..Or something like that lol

I never name my characters because I can never think of a name that fits so they stay as he or she throughout the whole story. o 3o

What is this, a Staff Hangout thread? lol

Do you guys write mostly fanfiction or mostly original stuff? Just curious and thought about this the other day.

I'm a fic person. I'm not especially good at worldbuilding and I find it boring to write like, modern-day character-based fics. I mean I like reading them, but they're not the kind of think I like writing. I prefer to take secondary/tertiary/minor characters and expand on them and the world in fics. Er, what I'm saying is that most of my stuff is Pokémon.

I always felt slightly uncomfortable with writing about characters that others created. Even when bunnying people slightly in RPs or writing about characters I feel I know really well. I just don't trust myself to do them justice, I suppose. I'm totally fine with writing fics based on established worlds and places, but I prefer creating my own characters. That way I know what they would do in given situations, without a doubt :3

That's the most beautiful thing about writing, imo. To reach a point where your characters really come alive for you, so you don't have to think hard about what they should do next, because the only reason you should struggle with that is if they would struggle as well. And if that's so, you can just write about the struggle they have. Haha. Or, it might be me being damaged from RPing.

I mostly do fics myself (Negima is the best wink) as I'm not that great with coming up with my own original story. Of course I do shuffle things around and add my own characters and what not, but I tend to gravitate towards fanfictions. I'm also horribly picky about reading it and I rarely read anything outside of Negima fanfiction.

And you're right, this is a staff hangout suddenly lol.

That's why I tend to play with less developed characters. Like, they have their unique traits and sometimes minor backstory, but I can really flesh them out so much more than what we're given in canon without worrying too much about going OOC. Working with the XY game kids rn and ngls they're left pretty open-ended.

Don't know if I'll ever write original stories. :(
Tbh I feel that way a lot, but more because there's not really much room for original writing on the internet. People want fic/aren't as interested in stories they can't immediately relate to. It's hard to find original writing unless you know/know of the author. Original stories are still pretty much housed in official publications.

I feel in the minority here. D: I never ever ever write fanfic. Everything I write is original and all my ideas and everything. Each thing I write I start from scratch. I can't do something that's already been done because to me there's no need when that's someone else's work and I feel like I'm copying them. I don't like to copy. D:

Fanfiction isn't necessarily copying. A lot of fanfiction writers expand on lesser known characters and branch out the story in a completely different direction, drop in a million of their own original characters and ideas, etc.

That's a fair point. But I feel like fic is less copying and more... reinterpretation/telling a new story in a developed world using loved characters. Well, good fic is. You can get hecka original even if using a base that someone else has given you. I mean, Pokémon in particular has like a bazillion AUs of itself already that are officially recognized. And things like Nuzlocke comics, fanfiction, and fancomics re-imagine the world we're canonically given as much as the multiverse canon itself.

It's actually pretty common I think. Star Trek, Doctor Who, and Star Wars all have pretty extensive canons as well, often produced by fans who manage to get their ideas into the real deal. (Doctor Who having a ton of actors who started off fans, two Doctors who are lifelong fans, the two latest showrunners also fans.) Sherlock Holmes is constantly being reinterpreted, mostly via television and film but there are a decent amount of books written using the characters. And they're old, too.

idk sorry I just am always seeing the "in defense of fanworks" tumblr posts and realizing like... this has been going on for EVER and fans have produced amazing and sometimes famous stuff by basing their stories on someone else's ideas.

The thing about Pokémon in particular with fics is that there's a heck of a lot of room to work with, a lot of gaps to fill in, that really there's not too much to copy. Sure, you get the generic trainer fics where they copy how Ash goes, or the games go, but there's a lot more.

You have now over 700 different critters to write about; how they act, how they live, etc. A bunch of pokedex entries exists, and movesets/their basis on real-life animals/objects provides a bunch of info, but there's still a lot to play around with.

Or the canon human characters. Take your typical gym leader - you have usually at least some general personality provided, what type they like, but you can come up with so many 'what if?' situations with them. And so forth. Pokémon tends to provide the characters and a slew of settings, but there's nothing too hard and fast about it beyond the general battling system and vague roles that only have become more refined gradually. And that's ignoring that there's three separate mediums you can choose to base your story on as well!

Besides, fanfics do help promote the brand, and let people explore different ideas and views on an aspect (or few) of the franchise. There is the odd author/creator who doesn't want people to write fics of their work, but Pokémon isn't one of them so I'd say they're fine with it. As long as you're not trying to profit directly from their work, anyway.

So I've been writing something random that will eventually develop into a fanfic. I'm still a bit hesitant to post it here D: Still leabing towards yes though >.<

Also I think I broke fanfiction.net, it's not loading for me D:

Post it! Be cool by doing so. =p

In what way is it broken? ffnet is kinda iffy at times I suppose, and clunky with the whole upload document process too.
