Approved: Retro Gaming Event

-Hosted by Nathan and Brendino-

Just like last year and the years before, I expect that the Retro Gaming Event should run fairly smoothly, and will probably follow the same formula of crowning the top 3 scorers in each game, with emblems going to both high scorers and general participants. I don't expect that we'll have to do to much maintenance on this event, with most of the work being putting together the CSS, coming up with the games and emblems, and whatnot.

Though I linked it to you earlier Nathan, here is a site that we could use to pick some games from. I've got no real preferences yet, so if there's any particular ones that you (or anyone else) would like to see, I'd be happy with them. We could even use some games from past GTs if you want- I don't think it'd be that big of a deal. Just for reference, here are the previous Retro Gaming Event threads: GT8 // PCX // GT10

I've been using the same to-do list for the past few planning threads now, but this event doesn't seem to change too much, so I might as well get some more use out of it:

TO-DO LIST:
  • Finalize games to be played
  • Main post design/rules
  • Schedule/Cut-off date
  • Create the emblems to be awarded
  • Create main thread

I really like you guys ran your previous events; they look very clean and organized to me. This time around, though, maybe you two could try increasing the amount of playable games, if it isn't too much of a hassle? People won't have to play every single one--it would be all up to them.

I was thinking maybe 3 games. How does that sound?

I'm fine with doing three games this time around. Hopefully if we get a good variety of games, it'll encourage more people to participate in the event.

Any ideas for some of the games we should use? Snake, Arkanoid, Pac-Man, Tetris, and Galaga are a few of the ones that came to mind right away, but like I said, I've got no real preference right now.

EDIT: elheroeoscuro's doing a Pac-Man event over in the Video Games forum right now, so we probably shouldn't use that one.

Snake, Tetris, and Pac-Man would make a great set, in my opinion! They're all pretty distinct, and won't feel repetitive every time you play each.

Classics. I like it! 8D; Tetris is kinda boring, though. Galaga and Space Invaders are a couple fun ones.

Oh, if Pac-Man is cancelled, then I suppose you guys would be better off going with either Arkanoid or Galaga. Including them both won't be a good idea, though, since they are actually pretty similar; hit and destroy blocks, haha.

^ I thought of Moon Patrol when I was coming up with my first list of games, but the only Flash version of it I could find wasn't that great. That seems to be the case with a lot of retro games unfortunately- one person will make a half-decent version, and then no one else will bother to make it.

So far it looks like we'll probably end up doing Snake, with Tetris, Galaga, Arkanoid and Space Invaders (though we did that one last year) being some other options. Obviously I'll want to hear Nathan's opinion, but if anyone else has some game suggestions too, just let us know!

Alright, so it looks like we're set on Snake and Arkanoid as our first two games- any particular preference for our final one? We should probably get that out of the way before we deal with any CSS/thread layout stuff.

EDIT: Since elheroe's Pac-Man event only ended up getting 7 participants, and since I destroyed the competition, I guess that could be an available option as well, alongside Tetris, Galaga, Space Invaders, Asteroids, etc.

I just wanted to let you know that I was planning on doing a Tetris challenge for next week's Year of Gaming week, although it's not exactly normal Tetris. I don't know if that would conflict with your GT planning or if you actually care, but I just wanted to give you the heads up before I execute it.

Thank for the heads up, taking note of that ^^

Thanks for the heads up Matt. It looks like we've decided on our three games anyway, so no need to worry about them conflicting with each other.

Snake, Arkanoid and Asteroids?

Also we must start thinking about emblems. For the CSS, I'll most likely recycle the previous or add some subtle touches to it.
If you're happy with those games, I'm happy. I'll have no problem whipping a couple of emblems up (I assume we'll be awarding one for the top 3 scorers in each, and one overall participation emblem), but feel free to do what you'd like with the CSS. The event rules/outline shouldn't be that different from last year's either, so I'll go ahead and update it over the next couple of days when I get the chance.

Would you guys be attempting to embed these games within the thread, or are you going to link them directly? I think it'd be better if you went with former. People don't have to go into some external site, and could generally be a bit of time-saver. Either is fine, though, but as I said, embedding would be preferable!

I know that in the past when we were only running single game events, we would embed them if possible. I'm not a big fan of going off site either, but I'm not sure if embedding 3 different games into the first post would be the best idea, since I know some people on PC still have slower internet connections. If I can get the source code for each of the games though, I'll see what we can do.
