[Event] Secret Delibird Challenge (Complete)

The Secret Delibird Challenge in Pokémon Sapphire

:grovyle::magikarp: :aron:
Part 2

After grabbing an easy victory over Roxanne, I quickly did necessary story stuff, while also avoiding as many trainers as possible.

And before you knew it, I got two na members on my team. I didn't bother with leveling up Magikarp, the Mad King Aerys II, because I would use him anyway. But I did some grinding to get Aron, the fearsome Maegor I, on the Brawly's level.

My strategy for Brawly was simple. Just use whatever I have and hopefully win. It took me two tries to beat him. On my first try, I got unlucky. I started with Maegor I and got knocked out immediately by Machop. I then sent out Aegon I and had a bad RNG on Bullet Seed, always hitting just 2 times.

On my second try, I had the very same strategy, but a lot more luck. Maegor I survived the initial clash with Machop and then managed to beat it thanks to Headbutt's flinch. I sent out Aegon I against Makuhita and got lucky with better Bullet Seeds.

[PokeCommunity.com] Secret Delibird Challenge (Complete)

I'm sure Wattson will be a pain to beat. I think I'll have to bring all my luck, because it will all be on Aegon I and Maegor I again.

Eleanor's Secret Delibird Challenge - Part 1

Noelle - Pokémon Platinum
Assigned team: Empoleon, Yanmega, Gallade, Rhyperior, Houndoom, Rotom

I'm speedrunning the beginning of this run, having just Piplup available to me from the start. Of course, Piplup trivializes Roark - and with me not really worrying about level limits (at least for now), she can even evolve into Prinplup before the first gym, KO every opponent in just one hit, and make Roark really question his job choice. Even Mars is easy enough, simply because of the level advantage that I have - despite not even doing that much grinding - because of having just one Pokémon in my team.

Of course the problem is Gardenia. Honestly, fighting Gardenia with just one Water-type Pokémon at the beginning of a game is not a challenge I was looking forward to. The game (rightfully) gives you just a few ways to overcome this hurdle, since it's still early-game: so things like TMs, held items and so on are to be saved for later for the sake of progression, but the usual Flying, Fire and Bug encounters are there for you to pick up. Well, unless you're doing a scramble challenge so no luck there. The only other obvious way to deal with the situation? Grind until oblivion (or just pray for good luck), and brute-force the fight with - in this case - a lv. 40 or so Empoleon, which is by far my LEAST favorite way of playing Pokémon.

I guess all that loathing paid off, however, since I found a better way of making use of all my limited resources. I started the fight against Gardenia with just a lv. 28 Prinplup with Peck, 1 X Defense, 1 X Sp. Defense, 1 Dire Hit, and a whole bunch of healing items from the Herb Shop in Eterna City. Turtwig gave me enough time to set up all three X items, because I knew he would set up a Reflect any chance he'd get, and while I had to stall out with healing items and avoid critical hits from Razor Leaf (which did come eventually, but Prinplup could survive at least one at a time), I eventually was able to wear him down. Cherrim came up next and, thanks to the level advantage and lack of Reflect, went down relatively quickly. And surprisingly, the same could be said about Roserade too, thanks to some crit luck (the Dire Hit was important). And thank goodness it happened, because Cherrim had landed a Leech Seed on my only Pokémon :)))

Fun fact, I was listening to some Noel Gallagher song when I started playing, and I ended up randomly naming my character "Noelle" because of that. It fits in with Christmas time too, I guess... but you know who's named Noelle as well? A Genshin character! So I might as well name my six Pokémon after Genshin characters too. Just based on vibes.

Team after badge #2:
Eula - Prinplup ♀ - lv. 28

Edit 1: just noticed Noelle pairs very well with Explorer of Time's player character name hahahahaha

Edit 2: if the player I chose the team for doesn't get it, I'll be disappointed, just saying ♥

Petalburg Forest: I was a little nervous about my first encounter with Team Aqua because Bulma the Ralts had no attacking move that could hit Poochyena, and Lotad's attacking stats are pretty weak this early in the game. I beat the Team Aqua Grunt's Poochyena with the combination of a couple of Howls and Tackle from Poochyena. After that, I obtained the TM for Bullet Seed which I forgot to use on Lotad prior to Roxanne because I TOTALLY know what I'm doing.

First Double Battle against the twins: I was nervous about Seedot's Bide, so Ralts beat the enemy Lotad into submission while Shu/Poocheyna spammed Howl. After two turns of Confusion and Howl, I was a little concerned Seedot might survive, so I chose to wait it out one more turn by using Bulma/Ralts's Growl and Shu/Poochyena's Howl. I then realized I had more than enough fire power with Tackle to beat Seedot even though Bulma/Ralts's confusion wasn't enough to KO. So I beat the twins that way.

I wasted my first Great Ball on an Abra (whoops).

I did some grinding north of Petalburg, and then I was challenged Roxanne. By this point, Bulma/Ralts was Lv 14, and Yamcha/Lotad was Lv 13 while Poochyena was stuck at Lv 10. (I am not at all a fan of Poochyena's moveset in RSE's early game.) I beat Roxanne's two Geodude with Lotad's Absorb, and then I sent out Bulma/Ralts and immediately realized I forgot to give Bulma an Oran Berry, and then I soon realized the berries I gave Poochyena and Lotad aren't useful in this gym cuz they're for poisoning (eg, Petalburg Woods Shroomish). Whoops. So I started hammering away with Confusion. I got a critical hit on Nosepass down to the yellow, but then it ate a berry, so I used a Potion, then Roxanne used her Potion, so I was borderline back to square one. I still managed to beat her first try though. ... Because it's Roxanne... At least Brock is hard if you pick the fire starter.

It's at this point that Yamcha/Lotad evolved into Lombre. Hell yeah! I didn't know this thing evovled so quickly.

So after that I went to rescue Mr. Briney's beloved Peeko (with some Repels in effect), and ... actually, did you guys know that in caves, Nature Power turns into freaking Shadow Ball?! That's amazing! It's also fitting since the Lotad line is based on Kappa which are yokai (essentially Japanese folklore's monsters, spirits, etc.)

I agreed to battle May. Her Wingull was a bit higher level than I expected, but I beat it with Confusion spam. Then her Treeko ... Treecko? Have I been spelling it wrong? Her Treecko went down to Nature Power (which turned into Swift) from Yamcha/Lombe.

That's where I just got to. I'm sorry this is taking longer than I thought, but I did a livestream yesterday (the finale to Pokemon Blue), so I decided to take the day off from this challenge.

Gym 7 Update

As for today, I went to route 121, leveled up all my mons there using my DexNav(there's Chansey there) till they hit lvl cap, then went to Mt. Pyre, fought team Aqua there, Stormed Team Magmas base, stormed Team Aqua base, crossed the Sea and wrecked Tate&Liza's team in Mossdeep City, giving me the 7th badge.

Female Pop Singers? I recognize Britney Spears and Miley Cyrus, and Wikipedia says there's a Paola Iezzi, Jenna Rose, and Nikki Webster who were all in the same genre. There was also a pop duo named Scarlet, though I'm less sure about that since they're not a single person.

Almost, the special attackers are named after famous singers, and the physical attackers are named after actresses Jenna Ortega, Scarlet Johansen, Paola Oliveira (Brazilian Actress), The singers you got right, Miley Cyrus and Britney Spears, and the last is Nikki Minaj

Gym 8 Update

After leaving Mossdeep I went to the underground cave where Kyogre is awakened, Then to Sootopolis, and then the long surf to Sky Pillar, with 86551737862552 unavoidable trainers on the way, this part was pretty easy, I have a good coverage for water Pokemon, and Technician Breloom with Bullet Seed is kinda scary, so no problems here, 1 faint during the battle with Juan, Scarlet (Breloom) got crit by a Huge Power Azumarill using Play Rough, that was a 1HKo, now it's time to grind some levels and directly to Elite 4!

[PokeCommunity.com] Secret Delibird Challenge (Complete)

Not gonna update on the team yet, just a few level ups, and 1 or 2 moves changed, some of them didn't even lvl up. Gonna do 1 last update on the team right before elite 4

Edit: This is my team, I'm going to attempt the Elite 4, Let's see what will happen.

GYM 2:
Ah, that disobeyment has come to bite me, though ignoring Nuzleaf's disobeyment, I had multiple tries on Brawly (level limit 19) until I got lucky enough. My first few tries had my Grovyle on 18 and Nuzleaf on 19, but either due to crit, unfortunate disobeys, or move used, Makuhita would always be too bulky to kill. So I decided to go back and grind Grovyle until he's barely about to level to 20, a problem when I try to keep Nuzleaf under the level limit until I decided to bring in my HM slave to help with that issue.

It took a couple more tries but Grovyle being able to go 1-on-1 with Machop most of the time, and Meditite was an easy heal for Grovyle using Absorb alongside wasting Brawley's HP, Makuhita was brute forcing it with Grovyle's absorb and landing a good enough Bullet Seed from Nuzleaf.

Other than that, there wasn't much to say other than Grovyle accidently fainted from the optionable May battle at Rustboro lol, also yes I changed DOTS' name to Earth :]

Note: Zigzagoon is only there as HM slave

The team on my last update ended not being even nearly strong enough to beat Elite 4, but after something like 10 failed runs, I gave up, sold every single Item I had, and bought Exp Candy L, enough to cap all my team at 58, then tried again, I had 2 revives, 4 Full Restores and 1 Full Heal in the bag, ended up not even needing them, beat the Elite 4 and the Champion without even needing to heal!

Eleanor's Secret Delibird Challenge - Part 2

Noelle - Pokémon Platinum
Assigned team: Empoleon, Yanmega, Gallade, Rhyperior, Houndoom, Rotom

I took my time for this segment, clearing nearly every trainer on the way and completing Mira's quest in Wayward cave too. This allowed my team to gain quite a few levels and have an easier time against Fantina... although I still had to try battling her twice in order to get my strategy right. This is because my only real way to deal damage to her Pokémon was Rotom...

And speaking of which, yes, I finally have two new team members! Fischl the Rotom, who I caught right after my last gym battle, and Kazuha (well, Kaedehara Kazuha) the male Ralts, caught on Route 208 later on. Rotom was a godsend against Jupiter, defeating Zubat and confusing Skuntank so that Prinplup could finish the battle without issues (I got slightly lucky there). Ralts, now Kirlia, was nowhere near as useful to be fair, but finally gave me a decent answer to Pokémon like Roselia, who are starting to appear more often and can deal good damage to Rotom and Prinplup (who cannot reliably defeat them in return). Of course, defeating Jupiter technically granted me access to the Rotom Secret Key and the Rotom room in the Galactic HQ, so I locked in a Rotom form as well. I chose Rotom Frost, mostly out of fear of Garchomp and similar, since I don't think giving Ice Beam to a slow Pokémon that's weak to Ground (Empoleon) will cut it, and - speaking of cutting it - I don't really need more Grass-type moves on my team. That is, assuming Kazuha can get Leaf Blade, the future Yanmega can get Giga Drain, and someone else will get Grass Knot from Gardenia's TM reward.

So, Fantina. Rotom learned Ominous Wind at level 29, which is enough to KO in one hit both Duskull and Haunter. Duskull is Fantina's lead and is slower than Rotom, so no problems there, but that brings in Mismagius. Originally I didn't switch and tested the waters with Rotom, but the right play is to switch in another Pokémon (Prinplup) and weaken Mismagius enough so that Rotom can come in, take one Shadow Ball (that's all Rotom can take, being a Ghost-type even when inside of an appliance in these games) and retaliate with Ominous Wind when Mismagius can no longer survive it. At that point, Haunter is easy enough: he did attempt Sucker Punch but that was not enough to KO Fischl anyways, and he was defeated. Obviously, had I not changed form to Rotom, this would not have happened, due to the difference in stats (Rotom gets way bulkier within appliances).

Team after badge #3:
Eula - Prinplup ♀ - lv. 30
Fischl - Rotom (Frost) - lv. 29
Kazuha - Kirlia ♂ - lv. 23

So... Do I rate the Team now? Or do I make another post with the scores I give to the pokémon?
You do rate the team now, but it doesn't matter if it's in this post or in a different post. Give them each a score on a 1 to 10 scale, with a description of why you gave each of them that score, and make a guess for your Scrambler.

EDIT: Also, please try and make your images smaller, and put them in a spoiler tag if you're posting a lot of them. Your 2000+ pixel phone screenshots take up an extremely large amount of space on desktop even if there isn't much of a difference on mobile. 400 or 600 pixels should be plenty. I've manually shrank all your images with my mod powers but it's time-consuming to do so with a dozen images and I'd really like to avoid that in the future.

Update 4: Erika

Current Team: :wartortle::pidgeotto::vulpix::trapinch::gloom:
Cupid (Wartortle), Dasher (Pidgeotto), Vixen (Vulpix), Rudolph (Trapinch), and Dancer (Gloom)

Level limit: 29 (Victreebel/Vileplume)

Imprison on Vixen? Is that ever going to be funny versus someone? ...No, not Blaine. Pass.

Witnessed quite a battle between Vixen and a Charmander. For three straight rounds: a miss for Vixen and hitting itself in confusion for Charmander.

Note to self: Rock Slide tutor in Rock Tunnel. Held off on making a decision for now. Probably goes to Rudolph.

Battled the Grinch in Pokemon Tower after reaching the end of Rock Tunnel. Won the Dasher mirror match, but not without a critical making it closer than it should have. Was absolutely terrified of Gyarados. Took so much damage from a Thrash on Cupid. Feels ridiculous to face a 90 power move when most team members have a 40 power move. Sent in Dancer for a Sleep Powder. Shut it down pretty effectively. Appreciated an Acid critical (+defense drop before that) to topple it. Almost walked away with no faints, if not for Growlithe landing a critial Ember on Rudolph. Meh.

Whoops. Accidentally walked into the double battle grinding trainer (level 29 Rapidash + Ninetales) after getting the Fly HM. Fainted Vixen on a critical Stomp. Would love to know how many times Vixen has gotten criticaled.

Leveled up to 29 on the gym trainers and a little bit of the Rocket Hideout. Learned Flamethrower on Vixen at the very generous level of 29. Saw no other worthwhile moves ahead. Evolved it into Ninetales. Amounts to a huge power boost between the two things.

Arrived at a dilemma. Wanted Ice Beam for Cupid for the gym. Costs 4000 coins. Also wanted Shadow Ball for Kangaskhan later (probably). Had nowhere near enough money. Decided to gamble at the slots to see how it went. Sped through in hopes of lining up 7's randomly. Nope. Slowed it down to 15 frames per second instead, which did work. Kind of hated that, though. Ended up timing it at regular speed. Worked pretty well. Took maybe an hour and a half, in-game time, counting all the different methods. Bought Ice Beam for Cupid.

Already knows the plan by now: Cupid versus Erika. Recognizes the very real possibility of getting smoked right out the gate by Victreebel's Giga Drain. Probably turns it over to Dancer if that goes south quickly. Would like to see it face Vileplume and somehow win. Always has Dasher and Vixen to carry home a victory, if necessary. Gave a Cheri Berry to Cupid and a Chesto Berry to Dasher.

Outsped Victreebel and hit it for ~75% health with one Ice Beam. Dodged the Stun Spore, then finished Victreebel. One-shot Tangela. Outsped the Vileplume, aaaaand:
[PokeCommunity.com] Secret Delibird Challenge (Complete)

What a freeze. Ended the match there, basically. Took 0 damage with no items used. Acquired Badge #4. Gladly accepted the Giga Drain TM for Dancer, who no longer needs to use a 20 power Absorb. (Hates the trash 5 PP on Giga Drain, though. Will spend all future PP Ups on that.)

Calculated it out after the fact. Takes about 66.2 - 77.9% health from one Giga Drain (from Vileplume or Victreebel). Likely heals Vileplume out of two-shot range too.

Thank you. You still need to rate your team to actually complete the challenge, however. Each individual Pokemon should be rated on a 1-10 scale with a description of why you gave it that rating, and you will also need to guess your Scrambler.

Well, here goes the rating for my team

Eleanor's Secret Delibird Challenge - Part 3

Noelle - Pokémon Platinum
Assigned team: Empoleon, Yanmega, Gallade, Rhyperior, Houndoom, Rotom

Two gyms in one part once again as my now full team has decimated Maylene and Crasher Wake's teams much more easily than I expected! Yes, I caught the last three team members during this segment - that is Xinyan the Houndour from Valor Lakefront, Chiori the Rhyhorn from Route 214, and Baizhu the Yanma from the Great Marsh (not a great place to catch Pokémon...) - but honestly, all of the work was done by just Fischl and Kazuha. Kazuha, who is now a Gallade thanks to the Dawn Stone on Route 212.

Maylene's Meditite was no problem for Fischl, while Machoke and (somehow) even Lucario easily fell to Kazuha's Psycho Cuts. Interestingly, I was able to get nearly perfect 2-hit KOs on those two Pokémon, which was very lucky since it meant Maylene would not use any potion. The same duo dealt with Crasher Wake's Pokémon - Fischl's Shock Waves were too much to handle for both Gyarados (x4 weakness) and Floatzel (just frail), while Whiscash was defeated by Kazuha's Magical Leaf. Note that Fischl was bulky enough to barely survive a Crunch from Floatzel, at least in this form!

Team after badge #5:
Eula - Prinplup ♀ - lv. 33
Fischl - Rotom (Frost) - lv. 35
Kazuha - Gallade ♂ - lv. 32
Xinyan - Houndoom ♀ - lv. 30
Chiori - Rhyhorn ♀ - lv. 28
Baizhu - Yanma ♂ - lv. 26

GYM 3:
I expected this gym to be hard with the current team but somehow not as bad as Brawly was? Starting from after Dewford, the journey to Mauville wasn't that bad and May wasn't that hard, Leer + Quick Attack combo nicely dispatch the Combusken and the other mon weren't bad. This is also where I picked up my third team member, Star the Illumise. I was a bit unsure about her usage since I rarely use support mon but I went ahead and grind her up since I skipped every trainers again and backtracked to Rustboro to grab the Exp Share and Miracle Seed.

Entering the gym, I didn't really have a plan, I knew that Magneton would be the toughest. The plan began to form when Illumise learnt Encore. It took a couple of trial and errors but eventually I got a good enough run after buying some Paralyze heals. Illumise can take down Voltorb just by Charming em first turn and quick attacking until it decides to Selfdestruct, and then Encoring on Electrike's Howl and getting enough para luck. On Magneton, I let Illumise go down so Nuzleaf can safely switch in and since he can take on Magneton's attack, the Bide usually kills em with enough luck (no SonicBoom misses). The Manectric was easier, I switch to Grovyle and manage two leers on Manectric before it goes down and though I did have to use Soda Pops just to keep Nuzleaf alive, he killed Manectric after using Swift multiple times.

All in all, a very messy fight...Ough, I'm not looking forward to Flannery.

  • Chapter 2: Solo Bunny... until Route 8

With the Snorlax blocking Route 7 out of the way, I had a double rival battle (or was it "rival double battle"?) against Tierno and Trevor with Serena by my side. It was right after this battle when my bunny Kris evolved. I then got Byleth the Ashen Demon Inkay and Corrin the Hoshidan/Nohrian princess Drifloon (the latter is partly to honor the late @Corrin) upon stepping foot at the cliffside part of Route 8. Fun additions to the club, especially with me finding Byleth's Contrary hilarious when faced with a foe's (normally) stat-dropping moves like, say, Sand Attack or Tail Whip. Makes me look forward to him using self-stat-lowering moves like Superpower which I'd normally avoid like the plague. And many, many distractions later, Shez the wandering mercenary Binacle joined the gang soon after arriving at Cyllage City. Funnily enough, I had Byleth out while capturing Shez only to realize that it actually mirrors the fight in FEW Three Hopes chapter 0. What coincidence. 😅

One rock climbing and many random items from Kris later (thanks, Pickup), I finally reached Grant for his gym battle. Shez was almost level 25 by the time the battle started. Can't be helped since he was my best bet to resist Amaura's ice attacks -- including Refrigerate Take Down which he probably could resist without the Refrigerate part anyway. Oh well, his Clamp and Rock Smash were quite reliable despite the last-ditch Thunder Wave from Amaura. As for Grant's Tyrunt, Kris's Mud Shot and Double Kick sealed the dino's fate.

Next up: grabbing Alear and the Rumble Badge. I'll probably need Corrin and/or Byleth for the latter.
