[Event] Secret Delibird Challenge (Complete)

@Arcaneum @Celèste1 @Cyddeon @Devalue @DragonEye @Eleanor @Janp @Kyatra @MachoPony @Reginald Cosmic @saniachan

The event is complete!

Winner: The winner of the challenge is Arcaneum, who picked Cyddeon's team! Arcaneum not only picked the highest-ranked team with 53 points from Cyddeon, but also made the only correct guess out of everyone in the challenge! Both Arcaneum and Eleanor will get a bonus 12 points, which means that Arcaneum has 65 points!

Runner-Up: Eleanor, who picked Arcaneum's team, may have only gotten 45 points from the initial ranking, but that Breloom convinced Arcaneum it was her who picked the team, and they were correct! As a result, Eleanor has a total of 57 points!

3rd: Despite being too busy to actually beat her own game, Celèste1 still put together the third-best team of the challenge for saniachan. The Fire Emblem Lords were one of only two teams to score over 50 points, but were surpassed by Eleanor's bonus points.

4th: In fourth place, we have MachoPony, who built a team of Pokemon for Kyatra. 48 points, a one point lead over the team below it, as everything outside the top three ended up in the 40s.

5th: Devalue, who built my team, came in 5th place with 47 points. They picked a team of five excellent Pokemon... and Staraptor for some reason. I still want to know what you were thinking with that one.

6th: DragonEye, who picked Reginald Cosmic's team, got 46 points. This was higher than I expected, given the team's lategame difficulties, but it seems to have worked out well for Reginald.

7th: Cyddeon, who picked Devalue's team, is the only challenger to score a fractional point total, with 45.5 points. As far as rankings go, there's nothing exceptional apart from that.

8th: Saniachan, who picked Eleanor's team, is at eighth place, with 45 points. None of these Pokemon did terribly, the lowest score was 6.5, which is higher than some lowest-rank team members in higher places. Unfortunately, no Pokemon scored higher than an 8, keeping Saniachan from rising higher than eighth.

9th: I came in ninth place with 44 points, and largely because my player, MachoPony, ended up with the wrong abilities for Machamp and Togekiss. My heart visibly sank when I found out they didn't bother to get the obviously-stronger abilities I had built this team around, and ended up with Guts and Hustle. At least Scizor ended up with Technician in the end, though. Four of MachoPony's Pokemon, Machamp, Lucario, Gyarados, and Scizor, were Pokemon I used in various Sinnoh challenge runs, but it seems that wasn't enough to identify me.

10th: In last place among those whose players' finished their games, we have Reginald Cosmic, who picked Janp's team and scored 43 points. Janp turned out to not be so much of a fan of this Dragon and monster themed team, and what's more, the Dragon theme led Janp to suspect DragonEye, a wrong guess. At least he scored points, unlike the bottom two, though.

11th: Next-to-last, we have Janp, who picked a team for Celèste1. She, unfortunately, was very busy with work and unable to meet the deadline, but she at least made it to the fifth gym before tonight. She does intend to keep playing the game, and is enjoying the challenge, so hopefully you'll be able to get some feedback when she's done.

12th: Last, we have Kyatra, who picked a team for DragonEye, who completely forgot about her game. Bad luck, or a team so forgettable that its player forgot it existed? Only DragonEye herself can tell us.

Well, what can I say, I forgot one simple thing when choosing Devalue's team, and that cost a lot of points... It was the fact that the game I chose is completed on the lower level side, and the members I wanted to carry the team get strong at the higher end levels, that said, this was the first event I participated, and I don't regret choosing this specific team even if I got a low ranking in the end! Thanks to @Explorer of Time for organizing this wonderful event, and if there's anything like this in the future, I'm 100% participating!

Ahhhhhhh hellllllllll YEAHHHHHHHHH, thank you ELLEBB for the team lmfao and GG all!

This was a really fun event, thank you for organising! Will definitely try to keep an eye out for these moving forward and honestly I kinda want to do most of these runs myself.

It's so easy to fall back to Pokémon you know and games you know, so this was a nice and fresh way of playing.

Note to self: try picking mons that are a little more personal to me next time.

I mean, really, all I thought of when I picked Eleanor's team was a starter mon + those only available in Platinum dex but not in DP ones. Could've picked a DP exclusive or two for the team. What a missed opportunity. 🫠

@Explorer of Time

Wrote down some team ideas. Neglected to save that. Remembers some of it.

Figured Black/White was the way to go. Draws from a large pool of candidates. Usually sticks you with the same old Pokemon in a more normal Black/White run too. Wanted to give you something you would not normally find.

Deals with one considerable downside: Knows the least about Generation 5. Looked up a few TM locations and major trainers. Recalls a few stumbling blocks (Clay's Excadrill, Take Down on Lenora's Herdier + Retaliate, the N -> Ghetsis fight). Inevitably misses things like good TMs that are present, similar to easy access to Headbutt, Return, and the elemental punches in Johto.

General checklist:
  • 3 of one type
  • Include several buffing moves on the team (but not necessarily on every Pokemon). Learns many of these moves too late to matter, or early on iffy Pokemon. Narrows down the list a lot.
  • Get dual-types, if possible.
  • Have decent level-up movesets. (Locks most good TMs behind postgame or very late, including all buffing moves.)
  • Something a little different. Should be more fun if it feels fresh, rather than rehashing an old playthrough.

Considered a weather team. Cannot easily get all the pieces for a good one sometimes.
  • Rain: Wrote out the team submission message for this. Included Ludicolo, Kingdra, and Pelipper. Saw your signature with your in-progress Water monotype team. Included Ludicolo and Pelipper. Noooope.
  • Sun: Tried a few configurations. Disliked them. Leaned towards 3 Fire + 3 Grass. Worried about too many pure Fire and Grass/Poisons, plus Torkoal faring poorly on score as a slow, mono-typed Pokemon.
  • Sun + Rain: Could be interesting to switch between the weathers. Inevitably put the same Water types on the team as before.
  • Sand: Had Hippowdon, Excadrill (maybe), Krookodile, and Gliscor here. Does not gain that much from sand, though. Packs a lot of power. Hated to have two Generation 5 Pokemon. Did not expect you to choose hidden abilities either, taking Sandslash off the table (who would be a second mono-Ground anyways).

Specifically axed some Pokemon:
  • Zoroark: Fun ability. Learns Nasty Plot at 54, but all physical moves until...64. Ew.
  • Houndoom: Basically the Zoroark problem, but with Ember and Smog available. Also level 60 for Nasty Plot.
  • Gengar: Too good. Said the solo was too easy and boring. Appears in so many games too.
  • Chandelure: Amazing, sure. Probably used it before, especially in Generation 5.
  • Conkeldurr: Very strong. Learns Bulk Up. Was probably too slow, not to mention Generation 5.
  • Excadrill (kinda): Dominates too many Generation 5 runs.
  • Alakazam: An excellent Calm Mind Pokemon, but too common.
  • Lucario: Lots of good moves. Already used it many times.
  • Gyarados: See Alakazam, but for Dragon Dance. Gave it to you last time.
  • Gallade and Rotom: Gave these to you last time as well. Definitely no. Added Gardevoir by extension (another heavily used Pokemon).

Identified a few strong Pokemon to keep in mind. Based it somewhat on power, and somewhat on boosting moves. Included Drapion (some boosting moves, great typing), Gliscor, Porygon-Z, Kingdra (Dragon Dance + good typing), Electivire (fears every one that ever shows up, although no boosting moves), and Blaziken.

As for the Pokemon actually chosen:
  • Porygon-Z: Learns some fun moves (Conversion). Might not use them a ton, but maybe early. Gets Psybeam at level 7, which suffices to get to later special moves (especially given a later pick). Notably gets Nasty Plot as Porygon-Z. Was easily the best Nasty Plot Pokemon.

  • Staraptor: Avoided picking a second mono-Normal Pokemon. Personally had good experiences with it in Diamond. Learns Fighting on top of its STAB. Brought up a fair point about it being overshadowed in its offensive moves. Checks for defensive typing overlap, but rarely ever for offensive coverage overlap. Did not look to see if the Acrobatics or Return TMs were available either.

Argues it to be the best physical Normal/Flying type available with 120 base Attack and 100 base Speed, though. Hits hard with no setup, at the cost of being very frail. Cannot say no to Intimidate either, especially with several setup-based teammates. Seemed better than Dodrio (level 47 Drill Peck, slightly worse stats, no Double Team, no Intimidate) or Togekiss. Might not want to fiddle with Guts Swellow, even if Facade is available. (Did not check.)

(Sidenote: Look at Togetic's level-up moveset. Zero attacking moves by level-up until level 33. Would have been terrible until reaching the move relearner as Togekiss.)

  • Sawsbuck: Wanted something not mono-Normal or Normal/Flying. Left this, Bibarel, and Girafarig. Respected Sawsbuck before looking it up, though. Remembered it getting good moves in a Generation 5 playthrough. Has good Attack and Speed too. Believed in it. Worried it might get outshone by its teammates, however.

  • Blaziken: The only dual-typed Pokemon with Bulk Up. Ticked the boxes for offense. Cannot go too wrong with a starter. Did not see it in your Hall of Fame either. (Peeked at your Hall of Fame occasionally during team creation.)

  • Gliscor: Swords Dance at a very reasonable level 38, earlier than most options. Sports a good typing and a lot of coverage. Brings good Defense to the team, which is welcome.

Chose Pokemon Black over White because of Gliscor. Expected N's legendary to be nasty. Handles physical attacks way better than special attacks on this team. (Note: Paid less attention to Ghetsis's team, however. Expected it to work itself out. Had plenty of Fighting moves for Hydreigon.) Also, how often do you get Gliscor? Not very. Appeared on most, if not all, team composition ideas.

  • Starmie: Locked in this one last. Checked team weaknesses. Covered a lot of them (Fighting, Ice, Water) with Water/Psychic. Knows Starmie to be a powerhouse from past usage. Performs well without setup. Puts a Pokemon with Surf on the team too. (Realizes that is not necessary, but still nice.)

Admittedly wanted Slowking here, both for another Nasty Plot and its Special Defense. Figured such a slow Pokemon would not go over well. Likely shied away from Kingdra here because of it being the 5th physical Pokemon on the team, also.

Decided on Starmie last for a second reason: moves. Does not learn a Psychic move for the Fighting types it wants to counter. Cannot unlock its wide TM library until post-game either. (Thought Thunderbolt was post-game. Helped Starmie immensely to not be.) Agrees on level 51 Power Gem being ridiculous. Expected it to learn Surf, Grass Knot, Flash Cannon, and maybe Blizzard. Was that moveset good enough? Eh. Already felt very tired from exceptionally poor sleep the night before. Figured out most of the team prior to going to bed. Good enough.

Probably would have dropped the Normal team idea, knowing you disliked Staraptor. Would not have picked a second mono-Normal type Pokemon, a different Normal/Flying Pokemon, Girafarig, or Bibarel. Passed on Fighting because of you picking most of the good Fighting types in a Diamond run already. Remembers looking hard at Ground and Dark teams, so maybe that. Likely keeps 3 of 4 out of Porygon-Z, Blaziken, Gliscor, and Kingdra on the team, regardless of the primary team type.

One last thing: Chose a lot of bird-like Pokemon by coincidence.

I mean OK i could have gone for No Guard machamp but like. Guts is good too. No Guard just makes Dynamicpunch stupid. Cross Chop has the same base power and 80 accuracy.

For Togekiss, you only get one, the egg from cynthia i would have had to Breed it except it was male so i would have needed a ditto which i don't think exists in platinum (could be wrong)

Was a good team and a fun run. Taught me how busted Porygon Z was in sinnoh.

Speaking of Ditto in Platinum, have you tried to look for one in the Trophy Garden after talking to Mr. Backlot? You could soft-reset until he mentions a Ditto in Platinum but not in BDSP.

Sorry Kyatra, this isn't your fault 😓 I'm going to make sure I don't bit off more than I can chew with the next event
