This was the day Pokemon Black and White was released in Japan, and also the day the Fifth Generation started. This was five years ago today. What were your reactions when the games first come out? Were you looking forward to playing it? Did the hype matter to you at all? What's your thought now? Was it worth all the hype? Basically just use this thread to reflect on the last five years, and how your opinions have changed over time... and to celebrate that B/W is five years old! :')

As if I was gonna forget THIS date.

Five years have passed, huh? I remember being incredibly hyped for the game because of all the changes that were made in general (though mostly for the graphics and overhauled sprites). Even today 5th Gen's vibrant colors and new approach to maps are still amazing in my opinion. This generation was a huge leap from 4th Gen, and that's probably why it got loads of attention prior to release. Every new effect, new animation, new mechanic, Repel Yes/No box was something to marvel at. Reusable TMs was one of my favorite additions to the game; the fact that most were only obtainable and usable once in the previous games always irked me.

Typing all this only makes me want to pull out the cartridge from the drawer and play through the it once again! BW are without a doubt highlights of the Pokemon series.

Oh god has it really been 5 years... man I'm old hahaha

But yes, I remember the moment I was feeling hyped for the games and seeing all the interesting new and fresh ideas the game was showing, such as a completely new original Pokedex and triple/rotation battles. When I finally got to play the game in 2011, it felt like a religious experience and since then 5th Gen has held so much significance and memories with me.

That said, happy 5th anniversary Black & White. Thank you for changing my Pokemon experience forever.

    I can't believe it's already 5! Happy 5th Anniversary Black and White versions! It's certainly a special anniversary for a 5th Generation game. :)

I love these games a lot! I was really looking forward for both games since I've watched the trailers! The hype was all worth it! I'm so happy that the Unova made my wish into reality -- having all new Pokémon for one regional dex. :)

It has been 5 years, eh? I remember I was checking how it gives me a fresh experience of Pokémon, from seasons, the fact that I can't catch Pokémon that is not native to the Unova Dex until post-game, going through several bridges, and also N, I'm glad that I was hyped of Black and White when it's about to be released that time.

Happy 5th anniversary, Pokémon Black and White!

Oh my god 5 years? I felt so old right now. I remember when I play my first Pokémon White Version. I hope Pokémon will never leave our lives and stay forever.
By the way I didn't know that 18th of September was BW's birthday. Mine is tomorrow.

Wow, I feel much older than I need to feel, as I'm only 14. These games came out at the end of my 9th year of being alive, and boy, am I glad these games came out when they did. Before they came out, I always brought Heartgold to school at the end of 4th Grade, then 5th Grade comes along, and everyone is bringing their DS to do many things such as trading, battling, and even using the Xtransceiver features. I loved it. I remember having to go and spend the night at a friend's house during the Victini event because my own house's wi-fi wasn't working correctly at the time. Ah, good times. Here's to another 5 years!

I was excitied for them, but they dissapointed. I didn't have even a 1/3 of the playtime that I had in my copies of Platinum. I'll give GF some credit to try and reinvent the series (although I felt they really played it safe in some areas), but overall I felt that they were a failed experiment.

I liked them at the time, but overall they're probably my least favourite of the series now, if you don't count Gen. I and II.
B2W2 just blows them out of the water. :p

I did start a save file in Omega Ruby on the 18th earlier though, to commemorate this.

Wooooooow, it's really been 5 years. When they were announced I was pretty excited for it. I did my best to try not spoil them for me when they came out in Japan since most YouTubers would have done extensive coverage on them. I think I was a bit disappointed since a variety of things had to wait until post-game, but that didn't mean I did not enjoy the games thoroughly.

I can't get over the fact that it's been 5 years. I still remember the Japanese names for many of the 5th gen Pokemon. I remember being so excited for this release that waiting for the NA release was almost unbearable. I saw all of the reveals and had already planned out my team prior to buying it. This is the first Pokemon game I got at a midnight release. Granted, I had to get gens 1 through 4 as a birthday/Christmas age because I was too young to be at a midnight release... I was still very excited to get BW! The atmosphere here was phenomenal, too. Wifi Trade was booming... I miss those years.

Five years? Jeez. But anyway, I was amazed by the game - the cover, trailers, all that - and I had to wait six months before I could get it, because five years ago my wallet was always ;-; But it was very very worth it when I actually played.

These games in a sense are my lifesavers. I got my Japanese White a few days after its release in Japan and loved it, even though I couldn't read it. It was a great addition to my great first semester of college. I loved the region and the Pokemon so much, especially Petilil and Victini, two of my all-time favorites. In December of that year, I made a challenge to myself to get every new Pokemon into the Hall of Fame, something I did complete about a year later after starting it. It was well worth it.

When the games came out in America the following March, I was in a hard time in my life. The worst time, if I had to describe it. I got Black the day it came out and it kept me distracted from all of the awful things I was being put through at the time alongside raising so many partners in my long challenge on White. I bought an English White to accompany it so that I could play more challenges like randoms and other events. They're still some of my favorite games to play when I'm doing a challenge.
