A new game (and cartoon series), now with weird character designs! Well, at least in the case of Knuckles.

    [PokeCommunity.com] Sonic Boom

    Trailer:

And a bunch of info and images here: https://blogs.sega.com/2014/02/06/s...ategy-for-sonic-the-hedgehog-with-sonic-boom/

New developers, not replacing the current 'modern sonic' too but rather a side project. Game is to be on the 3DS and Wii U it seems.

Thoughts on this new development? I suppose this was the third game they mentioned for Sonic...

That does look kind of cool, although some of the redesigned character models look unusual.

Sadly, I no has a Wii U, but it might be worth something.

I've been wondering when Sonic would get some news! Game looks promising. Tails and Amy look great, and I don't mind Sonic's blue arms. Woah there, what happened to Knuckles. They kept the Lego blocks on Knuckles's shoes though, pahaha. Priceless.

I won't be getting a WiiU anytime soon, if ever. I'm curious to see how the 3DS version develops.

Looks way too fun for me to not follow this around.

I wish Sonic and Knuckles didn't look mutated, though.

Clearly Knuckles has been spending too much time with Rogue. He's not as active anymore and it's clearly showing! This looks weird yet fun at the same time. I NEEED A 3DS D:

The last Sonic game I played was Sonic the Hedgehog 2, this game looks really appealing to me though.
There wouldn't be much of a difference on 3DS vs Wii U I'm guessing?
I'll get the Wii U version regardless, I haven't played it in awhile...

I love how Sonic is Nathan Drake. Really the game looks like Adventure fused with Heroes which is fine by me. Funny how people are moaning about it being on wii U but when PS3 got a game Wii did not those people bashed the Wii. Either way I now need to buy Lost World for U and 3DS and this for both too

The only design change I'm not fond of is Knuckles, other than that, the game has potential due to being developed by former Naughty Dog developers, but expect this game to be panned by critics for not being like the old-school Sonic games, like they did with Lost World.

Open world Sonic? This won't go well. Sonic is all about speed and momentum gaining in linear levels, open world just goes against the series design.

That said, I'm not sure what Sega is even doing with the series. After many years they finally found a winning formula for 3D Sonic (Colors) but after Generations they still went ahead and kept experimenting with the series, and we all know how bad Lost Worlds turned out. (Granted the formula in itself isn't bad but its lack of polish and terrible level design held it far, far back. The boost formula is still much more fun and suitable for Sonic though.) Of course this is a spin off so I'll give it a pass for trying something new even if I doubt open world (and playable friends, like that ever worked out well) would actually be any good. It also looks very...unprofessional? Then again, I'm talking about Sonic.

    Ouch.

In any case, I agree. Sonic is very hit and miss and while this is a spin-off that shouldn't disrupt the main series games - outside of the disruptions they've caused themselves - I think that more time should be spent on the main line. Considering each Sonic game is very precariously approached by fans, Sega should take their time with every one.

    What's with the bandage appeal?
    It looks weird and silly.

I really like Tails and Amy's new design - super cute. But Knuckles oh my god why.. I don't approve at all, he's too bulky for my tastes. 8( Sad that they tampered with one of my favorites to that extent but hopefully I get used to it.

Seems like it'd be better on a bigger screen though. More reasons to maybe think about a WiiU.

Tails and Eggman look fine. Knuckles head doesn't match the body, '06 legs everywhere, and I'm not certain I like Sultry Amy. It's like they might as well had just made Zeena a reoccuring character or used Rouge instead if they're gonna go with generic "hot n' sassy" female stereotypes, which I'm already not a big proponent of.

Oh well, I guess that's what shows like Steven Universe is for. :(

The game itself looks like it could be cool. I'm curious to see how a western studio will handle Sonic, seeing as Sonic Team lacks self confidence, and Sonic being a non-factor in Japan anyway. Chris Senn from the cancelled Sonic X-Treme is on this one, so things could get interesting. One comment I read on Sonic Retro which makes me wonder is, despite split opinions on SatAM/Archie Sonic, why not just use that universe (again) as opposed to creating a new one? Isn't Ian Flynn doing good things with the series, now? :O I don't care either way, I'm just thinking out loud.

The show sounds like it'll be nice and stupid, so I'm gonna give it a watch when it comes out. Sonic seems like the kind of series that works with a combination of action and humor, but doesn't need to take itself all that seriously, sort of like the OVA. I'm just wary of Amy. Good God I hope these people know how to write female characters.

D: What? This isn't the sonic I grew up playing! Hmm... I may like it though, But I'm not sure about this...

Really? I knew he sounded familiar... I'm liking this game a little more now! ;P

I think the developers wanted to aim this game at western audience? (correct me if I'm wrong), so they designed the game much differently this time round. I read it off an article at 'My Nintendo News' ...

Correct, because curiously there's no intention to bring the show nor game to Japan. Not that Sonic was ever very popular there.

It does give off a Heroes vibe, which isn't very promising imo, but atm there's less characters than that game, and the environments look better too from that. So we'll see. Could be good, could be rubbish.

The actual character redesigns aren't too bad, but the in-game models are hideous. I think giving this game a new developer may also help to keep the game quite fresh as well. The Wii U exclusivity doesn't sound very healthy seeing how poorly Lost World sold (mainly also due to how everybody acts like it's the worst sonic game ever).

I don't know about this, but at least they're trying a new radical direction rather than having the same style as past games (A issue with the entire game industry as of late is the lack of risks taken).

but expect this game to be panned by critics for not being like the old-school Sonic games, like they did with Lost World

    ?

The main reason why LW was panned was due mostly to who poor the controls were and how poorly designed the game was. I've only seen a few reviews commenting on how it's too different from the classic formula. (Which should be a positive, but critics nowadays expect the same old **** handed to them on a silver platter)

The dubstep and Knuckles roided body really makes the game look unappealing to me, but I'll reserve judgement until after the game is out, and there's gameplay footage shown.
