[SPOILERS] New Pokémon leak - Favourites/least favourites?

For those who have been checking out the leaks, who are your favourite or least favourite new Mons so far?

I've actually done calculations for this and it's safe to say I only really like around 20% to 30% of the new Pokémon. Everything else ranges from "meh" to "atrocious."

As for the ones I like...
-I LOVE the Pawmi line, despite it barely changing with evolution. Remember the cat meme with the stages of a cat - Potat, Long Teen and Big Long/Big Potat? That's what this line feels like, and it reminds me of the Cyndaquil line in the best way possible. They're all so cute.
-I also love Bisharp's new evolution Kingambit! I already kind of liked Bisharp, but this definitely put the line on my map; I'm in love with the robot samurai look. I hope it's not just a regional evolution, so I can use it in a future game that is less awful than S/V.
-Finally, as for regular Mons, Dachsbun is possibly one of the best dog Mons I've seen. It's a lot better-looking than its pre-evolution, and the Shiny form is super adorable as well.
-Honorable mention goes to most of the Violet Paradox Mons, especially to the MechaGodzilla-inspired Iron Thorns/Future Tyranitar, Iron Moth/Future Volcarona, and Iron Valiant/Future... Gallevoir? (Now, the last one made me wonder if we'll get a genderless evolution for Kirlia in a future game. That'd be awesome.) As I said about Iron Treads, I've been wanting proper robot mons for a while, and these three just hit right.

As for least favourites...
-Most Ghost-types in this Generation have left a lot to be desired. Houndstone, Bramblin/Brambleghast and Annihilape are absolutely disgusting, Gholdengo looks like a cheap gold-coated version of the 7UP soda mascot, and Skeledirge is exactly what I dreaded Fuecoco would end up becoming - an eDgY reptile.
-I was also going to mention Flutter Mane/Past Misdreavus, which brings me to my point on the Scarlet Paradox Mons: they all look like zooted versions of the Pokémon they resemble. The only one I really like is Roaring Moon/Past Salamence, and even then looking at its face tanked my initial favourable opinion of it.
-Quaquaval and Meowscarada haven't endeared themselves to me either. The former in particular made my skin crawl seeing how human-like its movements are, and the latter is a Delphox scenario where a more pared-down design would be much better.
-THE CAPSIKID LINE. Pepequeno and Scovile from Xenoverse, if I ever said anything bad about you, I apologize. I started off kinda liking you anyway, but now I realize you would have been the ideal debut Grass/Fire Pokémon, not these... abominations. My goodness, these might be contenders for least favourite Pokémon ever.
-Speaking of contenders for least favourite Pokémon, the Tinkatink line are also close by. Out of the "obligatory girly Mon" lines of each Generation, this is easily the worst. When the leaks mentioned a "hammer fairy Pokémon", I was picturing a 1940s-cartoon fairy with a mallet, not a characterless Play-Doh figurine with a scrap hammer. The fact their Pokédex entries imply that they bully Steel-types just makes it even worse.

After sitting with me for a bit, I think there is around 28 pokemon that I like. Which is about normal. There is only one pokemon that just looks horrendous and is probably one of the worst pokemon/transformations I've ever seen.

I will go with the my Top 5 and Bottom 5.:

Top 5:

1. Killowattrel - While a basic bird pokemon, I love the over all design and screams Regional Bird like all the other ones. I love the colors they used for it. While not my favorite flying type, it is one of the best ones.

2. Baxcalibur - I have waited for an Ice/Dragon Pseudo for so long and it is finally here and I can't ask for more. It gives off strong Tyranitar vibes, but looks different enough to be one of my favorites in the entire Paldea Region. It is also a strong sword pokemon and I love pokemon with swords or sword representation. It is also a possible Sword in the Stone reference, which is one of the tales I love the most.

3. Ceruledge - Much like the last, I love this pokemon because of the swords and the design just look amazing and reminds me of Megaman. Not a fan of its typing, but it is still a favorite.

4. Kingambit - Once again, it is very closely related to swords which is a win in my book, although it looks for like a Samurai. Bisharp was a favorite from Unova, so having it is a big win for me.

5. Anihilape - This pokemon, I love the design and typing. Having a FIght/Ghost is amazing outside of a Legendary. It also very much reminds me of Ultra Instinct from Dragon Ball Super, which I think might be its inspiration. Not only is it a fighting monkey like Goku, it is also a ghost type like goku should be with how many times he has died.

Bottom 5:

1. Dolphin Pokemon Evolution - This pokemon is one of the most horrendous pokemon I've ever seen. While it may be a reference to Neo-Spacien Aqua Dolphin from YuGiOh GX, it failed terribly. It makes no sense why a Dolphin Pokemon becomes like this. It is very close to one of my most hated pokemon in all off the 1000+ Pokemon and forms we have. The leaker said we would hate it back in July, but man I never knew I could hate a Pokemon so much.

2. Spidops - Again this is such a terrible design... it is supposed to be a spider, but it doesn't look like one at all... let alone a bug type. Paldea has some of the worst looking bugs, but this is probably my most hated out of every single bug we have.

3. Flamigo - It is a freaking flamingo. you may as well just call it a real animal it is so basic. There isn't much else to say.

4. Tandemous/Maushold - there is so much wrong with this pokemon... not only is it even more basic than Flamigo, it is such a terrible choice. It's no wonder they got rid of the Daycare, because you put these pokemon in it, you end up with 4 instead of 2. I've never seen such a basic pokemon in my life. It also doesn't change at all when it evolves, just gets two children mice.... it is just such a terrible pokemon design in every possible way.

5. Dundunsparce - It is a giant dunsparce... that is all. It shouldn't have even got an evolution. I feel like they just threw it in just to get people to be quiet about wanting a Dunsparce Evolution. It is a slap in the face to the people that wanted one.

While I know they said they wanted to go to a more basic design. And people loved basic designs.... this is not at all what they meant. They literally just through a few actual animals in and call it a pokemon. It was a terrible choice. While most pokemon I can live with, the absolute worst are the ones in the bottom of the entire National Dex. I usually defend any pokemon... but I have never hated pokemon as much as I hate the Bottom 5. The only other pokemon like this was Bruxish and even the bottom 5 make it look like one of the best designs in pokemon.

Legendary Pokemon:

I wanted to put this in its own catagory. Over all I think their designs are good, just odd. The Dark Quartet I am not sure their design inspiration is, but seem to be inspired by Chinese Art or something. And seeing them in game, they actually don't look to bad.

As for Paradox Pokemon - While I understand the inspiration for most... I do not understand why they gave Misdrivus a Past form. It looks exactly like a normal Misdrivus and should have just a regional form with how normal it looks. They could have chosen a much better pokemon. One would never guess it is a different pokemon. Past Jigglypuff... again... just why? This pokemon is so basic. It could have just been a normal Jigglypuff Regional Variant. Future Hydreigon, like the others.... these is no difference between it and its normal form

Meowscarada is, by far, my favorite of all of them. I am definitely adding her to my team. She checks all the boxes for a Pokémon becoming one of my favorites. First, she not only has good stats, but also stats that correspond to my style of play. Whenever I undergo a regular playthrough, I prefer Pokémon that hit strong and fast. Her Attack stat is 110 and her Speed stat is 123, which is perfect for me. Second, she has a great ability in Protean. This means that she would function almost exactly like Greninja and Cinderace, two of my other favorites. I love that ability because it ensures that Pokémon would always hit with STAB. Third, it's going to be a Pokémon that would make a great impact competitively because of its ability and stats, meaning that I can climb the ladder with it. I am so excited for this and definitely will be picking Sprigatito. The rest of them, I can't really pick a direct favorite yet. I'll have to play the game first, but Meowscarada definitely has my vote for right now.

I don't plan on getting Scarlet and Violet, I've just been paying attention to leaks more or less so I can use the new Pokemon for my romhack! So that might be influencing my choices differently than others, haha. But here's where I stand:

Annihilape is awesome. I love Primeape becoming a weird Akuma guy??? Never would have expected that but it's amazing. REALLY cool concept.

Dudunsparce is really good. I was a little worried when I heard they were finally doing a Dunsparce evolution, because there's always been these fan designs where Dunsparce evolves into a big cool dragon guy, but part of the appeal of Dunsparce to me is that Dunsparce is... goofy! It's a little weirdo. Making Dunsparce's evolution what it is is very, very funny, but it's satisfying to me. Less is more in this case, I think!

I love a lot of the Paradox guys. Scream Tail, Iron Bundle and Flutter Mane are soooo good. I was intrigued by the concept of Paradox Pokemon from early leaks but I had low expectations for the designs, and they were so much better than I could have hoped.

I really like all the new dogs, especially the Greavard line. Funny little Hanna-Barbera dogs.

Lastly, surprisingly a big fan of Oinkologne?? They're really fun.

Favorites:

Tinkaton line is really cute, and I will be using it when I get the games. I like pink, and I like its story of going from being bullied to fighting back and taking out Corviknight with its hammer. Truly inspiring.

NaCli and only this one in the line. Its name is clever (sodium chloride), and it's really cute. I definitely don't like its evolutions, though.

Tatsugiri is really cute and comes in many colors. They did the sushi Pokemon right.

Varoom and its evolution. I'm finally getting a Poison/Steel type and its name is punny.

& all three new dog Pokemon are great in their first forms. Not their evolutions, though.

I like Bombirdier, too.

Least favorites:

Bramblin is terrible. Why did they think we needed a tumbleweed Pokemon.

Scovillian is fucking scary. Keep that thing away from me, I don't want to be anywhere near that thing.

Gimmighoul's evolution is just not my cup of tea. But, I guess it's just the fault of the 3d model.

& I definitely don't like Iron Treads.

A lot of the bug types look awful, but especially Spidops. Rabsca, too. Not a fan.

Don't like Orthoworm, either. It's just meh to me overall.

Two of the other legendaries don't look that great, especially the slug thing... and the turtle thing. What in the world is going on with that Pokemon?

Disappointing, but not least favorite:

Flamigo, down to its name is very generic.

Skeledirge disappoints me greatly.

Palafin looks no different from Finizen, and Maushold is just... silly. I like Finizen, and Tandemaus is cute, and I get that their evolution is that they had kids, but...that's just weird.

Dundunsparce looks so similar to Dunsparce it may as well not be an evolution at all.

Oh Lord. I really hate being negative about things some of you make love, but I have some feelings about some of these new Pokemon I have to get out.

I HATE most of the new designs. There are maybe 4 or 5 fully evolved Pokemon I don't hate. Not like. Don't hate.

The worst by far has to be the mouse Pokemon that just gains more mice as it evolves??? I make no secret of my hatred for Pokemon who are actually multiple Pokemon, but this is probably the worst example of this so far. The mice aren't even connected. It's just the same generic Sanrio-mascot looking mouse copy-and-pasted next to each other four times over.

Then there's the dolphin Pokemon that has rubber gloves... and human pectoral muscles??? For some reason??? I heard someone say it looks more like a mascot for Aquafresh than a Pokemon, and I totally agree. It's a shame, I truly was excited for a dolphin Pokemon.

Dishonorable mentions for worst new Mons are the "balloon animal" flamingo, the fatass water Treecko, the Minecraft mob saltstone, and Pooky from Moshi Monsters.

The resemblance is actually uncanny.

On a positive note, at least Ceruledge and Tinkaton are cool, and Quaquaval and Clodsire are stupid-looking in a fun way. I like Wo Chien too, but I have a strict no-legendaries-during-playthroughs policy. I wish I could mention more Pokemon here, But I genuinely couldn't think of anything nice to say about most of the new Pokemon. Kilowattrel... Isn't ugly, I guess? Dondonzo (or however you spell it) looks like a normal catfish? I'm looking through the list right now, and that's genuinely all I can come up with.

Again, sorry for the rant, double sorry for being negative, and triple sorry if I crapped on any Pokemon you like, but hot damn do I hate most of these. Here's to hoping my opinions on some of these change when I see them in action.

I have looked at the leaks and I have mixed feelings on them. I do like all three starter final forms though but there are some new Pokemon I don't like at all. I was going to try and use an 'all new Pokemon' team in my playthrough but that won't be the case here.

Quaquaval - Water/Fighting

I thought the water starter would turn into something Pirate related but a Carnival Dancer is a nice surprise. I'll be trying to get a female starter here. I really like the Grass Cat line but I have Grass types elsewhere here and the other new water types seem off to me.

Lilligant - Grass

My favourite Pokemon.

Ceruledge - Fire/Psychic

I like the look of the little Fire Knight.

Convergent Tentacruel - Grass/Ground

Much better Convergent Pokemon than the Wiglett line. The Walking Mushroom provides Ground coverage and I think is a Physical attacker.

Pawmi line - Electric/Fighting

Double Fighting Type is perhaps a little awkward but the Pawmi line is adorable.

Baxcalibur or Cetitan

I'm undecided on these two. I have not see the stats of most of the Pokemon. What may happen is I use the Cetitan until I get the Ice Dragon.

Misdreavus line/ Flutter Mane

My favourite ghost line finally get some love...sort of. Misdreavus has a Paradox form in Scarlet Post-game. The purple ghost has served me well in Sinnoh games and will again and will get to meet her ancient form.

Hey, I think it's fine to dislike stuff others like. Everyone wants different things out of Pokemon, which is why I think it's kind of a complicated franchise? Speaking for myself about one of the examples you listed:

I love Tandemaus and I personally love the Pokemon who are just more Pokemon together. It's funny to me. I like when Pokemon is a little goofy. But I get it! It's a matter of taste. As I've said elsewhere - the new Pokemon are friggin' weird!

I think this is all why I'm ultimately drawn to Pokecommunity, and alternatively to Sonic fan material - if you're disappointed in the official stuff, in a community like this you're encouraged to just... make your own! Fangames or romhacks or fanfics or whatever. I think the attitude around here is less bitter overall compared to other Pokemon fan communities, because if you don't like what Pokemon is doing lately, you can turn to fan creations. It's not quite "the same", of course, but there's options to look to.

Absolutely nothing is wrong with stating your opinion, even if its negative. I encourage you to keep speaking your mind. No need to apologize for that. We all can't agree on everything. You have some players that would feel love, hate, or indifference to the designs. In your case, well, at least you found some designs you liked or are otherwise indifferent to.

As for me personally, I never was the type to judge a Pokémon solely by its design. When I play Pokémon, my only intention is to win as many battles as possible, be it against the random trainers on routes and other locations, rivals, gym leaders, the Elite Four, villainous teams, battle facilities, and other human players when playing competitively. For me, designs don't win battles. Therefore, I couldn't care less about how a Pokémon looks. Instead, I judge a Pokémon based on its stats, learnset, and abilities because these characteristics ultimately determine whether or not they can help me win battles. For instance, while you might think that the dolphin Pokémon looks goofy, for me, that might be true to a degree, but those stats when it switches forms and that 650 base stat total are great "designs" for me.

I feel that if I use that Pokémon to its full potential, defeating me would be extremely difficult. With that being said, I still have been disappointed by a lot of the nerfs that took place, such as the Protean nerf, which made me a little bit less excited for Sprigatito and definitely weakened Greninja and Cinderace, two of my favorites, and many Pokémon have also been revealed to have their learnsets nerfed as well. This includes Pokémon that have been my favorites for a long time, such as Landorus-T. Apparently, a lot of Pokémon that had the ability to learn Defog can't learn it anymore, making it even difficult to remove hazards from the field. Nonetheless, I would still find a way to adjust and still have high hopes for these games.

Going with what everyone else said. I hate judging pokemon before they are 'officially' revealed. But some are just bad designs to me and there is absolutely no reason for you to say sorry for shareing what you think about specific pokemon, as long as you are respectful to other people's opinion. I personally am a champion of Unova where more than half my pokemon favorites come from. But so many people hate Unova pokemon. Every pokemon is someone's favorite. Just like every pokemon had people that hate it.

Now to get back on the base topic... some pokemon that I've hated are gradually growing on me. And when we see the official art for pokemon, some of the terrible looking pokemon might end up being some of the better looking. We only have static images to go on. So some of the hated pokemon might look even better when they are actually moving.

I do think there's something to be said about there being value in having Pokemon who are unpopular. I think Mr. Mime sucks, but I kind of "love to hate" Mr. Mime? There's a quality to Mr. Mime where it's a little bit, like, this guy is a vaguely unsettling weirdo on purpose. I think Mr. Mime succeeds at what it's trying to do as a Pokemon design. I also like to think that within the universe itself, people have the same debates about which Pokemon they hate. Maybe in Kanto they all think the Unova Pokemon look weird too.

Sometimes there's out-of-universe stuff that can endear me to a Pokemon too. Like how they did that Pokemon popularity poll in Japan to choose a Pokemon to distribute to all players, and when Greninja won it they also revealed that Simisear got the least amount of votes, and they started distributing apology Simisears and putting together Simisear business cards in Pokemon Center stores to save its reputation. It's silly to say it but this turned me around on the elemental monkeys completely, like the idea that the Pokemon themselves feel bad about how people see them is really funny.

Great post! I agree with you about this, but from a different perspective. Instead of finding value in unpopular Pokémon regarding their designs, I find value in certain unpopular Pokémon based upon how they rank in the meta game. For example, the Pokémon Malamar is one of my all-time favorite Pokémon, but within the Smogon world, as of last generation, Malamar was completely untiered, which is the worst way a Pokémon can be ranked via tiers on Smogon. In addition, according to the data from the website Pikalytics, a website dedicated to collecting data on how often Pokémon are used in the competitive scene, Malamar was used much less than 1% of the time. Despite this, I used Malamar on my main team in Pokémon Sword for ranked Doubles as well as Doubles OU in Pokémon Showdown. Currently, with this team, I am on my way to reaching Master Ball rank with Malamar as one of my leads in Doubles along with Incineroar, and was actually at the top of the ladder at one point in Doubles OU with mostly the same team. I find value in the fact that if you know what you're doing, you can find success with otherwise unpopular Pokémon that you love.

Gotta say, i'm a big fan of toedscruel. Love the convergent evolution pokemon. I'm definitely going to have a field day doing biology headcanons for some of these guys, i absolutely love speculative biology stuff like that. I love skeledirge, too. I also LOVE the future tyranitar, i've wanted a mecha-tyranitar pokemon ever since it was featured in the pokestar studios movie.

I LOVE TANDEMAUS & MAUSHOLD SO MUCH 🥹

Sadly, I don't really like any of the starter evolutions, design-wise :/ But I do like the whole crocodile-bird symbiosis Skeledirge has going on, as well as the Fire/Ghost typing, so I guess that's gonna be the one I choose.
Actually, there's a weirdly high amount of Pokemon this gen with symbiotic relationships - Skeledirge, Tandemaus/Maushold AND Dondozo + Tatsugiri? Arguably Farigiraf as well. Not complaining, it's just a lot.

Disappointed by Fidough's evolution. 😕 One, it looks too much like Growlithe, and two, the colors don't look like bread to me (but then again I don't have very much culinary knowledge 😅). It looks unpleasantly overdone. Also, I can't tell if it's supposed to actually be a Dachshund, or if the name is just for the pun and it's a just a nonspecified dog, but in either case it looks like a nonspecified dog.

That Dunsparce evolution...😂 I only wish the character limit was longer so it could be "Dudunsparcesparce". (Also, 520 BASE STATS?!)

Veluza's Pokedex entry is...weird:

😳 Are they stealing Pokedex entries from Weirdcore forums now?

Neutral on the Pokemon itself, but "Scovillain" is an amazing name.

Annihilape is awesome; one theory I heard is that it's a reference to Primeape's Pokedex entry stating that it sometimes gets so angry, it dies? Clodsire is cuuuute (even though it looks more like a Whiscash form).

Overall impressions...Does anyone else think the gen 9 Pokemon, generally, look a lot like TemTem?? It might just be the new art style of the icons used on Serebii and such, but still. Finizen the most of all.
Still, I really like all the little different mechanics they're trying in this dex - Pokemon evolving randomly into different forms with only cosmetic differences like Dudunsparce & Maushold, Finizen evolving into the same Pokemon but with access to an alternate form, Tandemouse evolving offscreen, Gimmighoul evolving through basically a sidequest and having an alternate form in the overworld you can't catch, lots of signature abilities...I just like stuff like that; makes the world feel more varied, even a little more real. Similarly, I like how there's regional variants + evolutions, convergent Pokemon, Terastalizing AND Paradox forms all hanging around in one region.

I'm not impressed with like 80% of them to be honest, feels like the laziest set of pokemon designs in the entire series imho...

...especially Dundunsparce and those very generic looking white mice with a evo that only adds one or two more of them lol. Do love the fire croc's final evo quite a bit though so I think I'll be going with that.

But hey at least we finally got a brand new typing so many have been asking for years now, Grass/Fire, but the pokemon looks so underwhelming honestly.

Are Tauros and Wooper seriously the only proper regional forms this time around though? Not counting the new pokemon of the likes of Wriglet, Dundunsparce and others that are inspired by their original counterparts.
