I have not read the novels, but I watched the series and realised I didn't like it at the end of season 4. It felt like the authors only wanted to ensure that we love some character in order to kill / mutilate them afterwards. Also, despite the nice look of the girl with dragons, it felt like she was always making the wrong decision.

It's a very political show with a small mix of fantasy. It's also very very violent. One of the most violent shows ever in my opinion. Lots of shock value.
I had to use a character map early on to follow it.
