Er, where are you getting your numbers? 5 years ago was 2006, when Vista debuted. $2000 got you far more than 512 MB of RAM, unless you're talking about laptops, which have always been expensive (but still had at least 1 GB of RAM for that price, probably 2 GB). My dad had a $800 custom desktop with 2 GB of RAM and two 80 GB hard drives that was built in 2005.

And most manufactured budget desktops give you between 160 GB hard drives and 500 GB hard drives, about the same amount of space as is available on a laptop right now.
