What happens if I do not vote?
Initially the Australian Electoral Commission will write to all apparent non-voters requesting that they either provide a reason for their failure to vote or pay a $20 penalty.
If, within 21 days, the apparent non-voter fails to reply, cannot provide a valid and sufficient reason or declines to pay the penalty, then prosecution proceedings may be instigated. If the matter is dealt with in court and the person is found guilty, he or she may be fined up to $50 plus court costs.

If you're sick, you'll most likely need a doctor's certifcate in order to prove your reason for being absent at the voting session.
But how would you provide reason for that? Would you need to mail it?
What if that person is incapacitated? Meaning.. they're not in a proper mental state to do that sort of thing for themselves? Would the person appointed with the power of attorney need to sign those documents themselves? Or would that entitle them to vote for the other person on their behalf? What if they don't have someone like that? They can't issue those sort of legal documents to nurses.. and they wouldn't have a way to get to court if they're bedridden.
That's kind of ridiculous.
