Sports The Football Discussion Thread!

Well done.

Looks like a pretty good squad to me, away from my bias in the goalkeeping with the goalkeeping department that is (Foster what the ♥♥♥♥). I take it Somebody had a gun pointed at Woy's family so he wouldn't pick Cleverley. Also feel we should have Carroll in the squad for a plan c.

That was a nice little earner for money I thought I'd lost years ago, beers on me this weekend.

3rd goalkeeper is irrelevant really, Forster is clear 2nd choice so they're only there for a disaster. Carroll is a monster but hasn't played enough football; when Carroll stays fit for a whole season he is probably the worst striker to play against.

Glass man Wilshire can't have played much more than him this season and he made the squad. He's more fashionable though I suppose.

Haha he sure is fashionable. I like Wilshere but he can't have had a better season than, say, Jack Cork.

Congratulations on that bet, Shinx, certainly not just your everyday good prediction there.

The World Cup squad is nice, but it would be nice if a couple of form players were among the standbys rather than players like Defoe or Carroll. Tom Huddlestone would've been a better standby than Cleverley too. I can't believe Chris Smalling is in the squad as well, that should be John Stones' place.

Smalling plays for Man Yoo though init. Doesn't matter where they finished or how awful the football they've been playing has been.

Anyway, in other football news. Pepe Lel has gone. Will Norwich be fighting with them for Mackay? They were already a boring side before, will they hire Hughton to take that to a new level?

If they get him then I could see Zola taking over at Norwich. There has been a surprising amount of talk about Lennon coming here as well, with Paul Lambert leaving Villa for Celtic. If that were to happen I wonder if Villa would get somebody like Moyes, could they even afford him? Could also see Moyes ending up at Newcastle.

I'm slightly more optimistic about Norwich than I was last night. McNally has announced that every single player has a relegation wage cut clause and none have get out clauses, we have no need to sell whatsoever. He also hinted that we'll be hiring a Director of Football, considering the mess that was last January's transfer window that is pretty nice news.

I've thought all season that Moyes would end up being a good fit at Newcastle once events had played out. It's amazing how badly Mel and Magath have managed to do since being appointed in such a short space of time.

It looks like Atletico will be creating a new Torres/Aguero/Falcao soon as Diego Costa is on the way out. £32m seems a bit low considering Atletico's higher status in the game now.

Western Sydney Wanderers head coach Tony Popovic emerges as a shock Norwich City managerial candidate

hahahahaha I know it's just paper talk but come on.

The Mirror going with a deal for Lennon is nearly done. I've always felt he would have to prove himself in the Championship before going to the Premier League despite doing well at Celtic. Feels like the story has been totally made up though.

At least if what McNally has said is true this won't be going on much longer.

Haha wow Popovic what a blast from the past he is. Not sure about Lennon, be interesting to see him at a club other than Celtic.

Huh, Tony Popovic.

He's actually doing decently for himself. The Wanderers are a new side, only two years old. (For those who don't know, football here got a massive revamp lately, and a league restarted with new teams - next season is the tenth so it's still fledging but steadily improving overall... even if the previous season might have been better watching imo. But I digress!). He's had some assistance in getting players he wants because for the moment the club is owned by the FFA (Football Fed. Australia) and etc, but the first season he took them to the premiership, and the 'grand final' as well (they lost to the team I follow though, hahaha). This season they got second and again lost in the grand final. They also got out of their group in the Asian Champions League (yes, Australia is part of asia in football), although atm they're likely to fall out of the round of 16 stage.

tl;dr he's done well. Made some mistakes here and there I suppose, but not a bad start over here.

Kinda annoyed right now with my club, or more specifically another club and what they're doing to us. I support the Central Coast Mariners, and middle of the season we let go of our coach Graham Arnold, former Australian striker and took us to a premiership/two second places and a grand final victory as well in the three previous seasons. Not bad for a club with constant off-field issues like money, and surrounded by three bigger clubs! Thing was, he hadn't been a popular signing initially, given he had been caretaker coach of the national team before, and we did not do well during then. (To the point of petitions for him to be removed, and chants of 'Arnold Out'). In a way, his stint with us really rebuilt him and put him back on the market with some sort of integrity. He spoke well of our club and said that he wouldn't go to any other A-league (Australian league) club, etc etc.

He was taken by a Japanese club, we let him go on good will and etc. Then he took probably our best midfielder with him. Err.... well, maybe it's good for his career. Then our fitness coach. Uhhhhh

And then he fell over. Quit/sacked after 6 weeks of the season there without a win. Club was apparently a right shambles by all reports (not just from what he said either), but why didn't he properly check the situation there? =/

After a lot of speculation and talking to by clubs, he then goes to one of our rival clubs, Sydney FC (the club who afforded Del Piero and is also known as Bling FC :V). Recall that he said he would never go to another club - sure, I can appreciate that we no longer have a spot for him and he has to find something, but a rival club? But that's not all. He doesn't even mention a word of thanks to us or acknowledges the situation. Then he signs our former fitness coach, another star player of ours, and is rumoured to be attempting to get yet another of our players. And then says 'it's football, it's business'.

What. A. Douche. Have some class at least and don't rip the guts out of the team that you supposedly were so thankful towards before you screwed yourself up royally again. [/rant]

Oh hey, you guys have Nick Montgomery and Marcel Seip, those are two names I haven't heard in a while. Also that South Korean guy that was at Gamba a few seasons ago.

Montgomery still kicking clumps out of people?

Popovic thing feels like his agent is trying to stir up some attention. I expect he'll show up in the media a few more times over the coming months now.

Should the World Cup get its own thread? It's such a huge event that I think it deserves a thread on its own, though I won't fight off any disagreements.

Monty's doing pretty well, have to say. Even been captain for some games when our one wasn't available, and he's a good fit for the club. Suppose he could still work on passing at times, but more than makes up for it with winning the ball. Tough but not brutal or anything in his tackling here imo.

Seip hasn't been very popular but I think he's put in some good games of late...until he got injured. Kim (the Korean player) has been more disappointing personally, and found wanting. Hopefully he'll be better after a preseason. And we have long off-seasons...

And yeah, I don't think we need another thread, this one probably would be just fine for discussing it. Not that there'd be much off-season movement during then to take away from it, haha.

Nah. If people want to talk about the World Cup then they'll find their way here.

It was pretty big last time, just checking through my created threads I see it had 1000+ replies in the few months before and during the tournament whereas this has 1500 in just over a year. I guess it's a judgement call really, I suppose it would be helpful for us 'regulars' to keep track of our usual club football discussion while there's tons of replies about the world cup going on.

Hey bobandbill, it's nice to see an Aussie. I have some extended family in Perth who support Perth Glory and the Australian national team. That does sound like a crappy situation with your ex-manager, but then these sort of things happen a lot with managers these days.

Cannot wait for all the England hype to begin in the press, only for us to struggle to qualify from our group then get knocked out in the round of 16. WOO ENGERLAND!

Nah, I don't think it'll be that bad this time. in 2, 4, 6 and 8 years time of course big things will be expected of this squad.

I actually think Ingerland will surprise a lot of people this time. I mean we aren't going to be playing 1980s style football, surely with this squad.
