Sports The Football Discussion Thread!

Keeps us alive until Wednesday then, where two teams that need a single point meet. Might stick a tenner on a 0 - 0.

Valencia winning at Real Madrid. There's another twist.

Edit: Ronaldo makes it 2-2 in added time. This could actually work into Atletico's favor if you think about it. There's no chance in hell Barcelona will lend a helping hand on Real's potential treble.

So right now Atlético would do with winning at home against Málaga and then getting a draw against Barcelona. Madrid are facing two relegation sides away this week (W/S) and Barcelona doing the same on Sunday. If they happen to not win all three games, Atlético could win the league next week.

I don't think Man City fans could of had a better weekend. A Giggs-led United lose at home to Sunderland, Chelsea draw at home to Norwich, they stroll to victory against and Everton and Liverpool literally throw away their last hope at the title. Game, set and match to the blue side of Manchester.

I don't think so, Everton made City fight for it, though I'm probably just nitpicking now.

Next two games City have are Aston Villa and West Ham at home. 99% safe to say the title is in their hands.

It's worrying how City have managed this with the amount of injuries they've had. There was a stat the other day which was something like Kompany, Toure, Silva and Aguero have only played 240 minutes together this season. Next season might be a walk in the park for them. I still think Mancini was a terrible manager so we might see a much stronger City in the coming seasons.

Being a Liverpool fan I honestly have no words for what happened, we literally threw the title away.

It does feel wrong though that they can get off so lightly for breaking a rule

The incident was reported to the FA by the club (who admitted the mistake) as soon as it was noticed and the whole thing was dealt with quickly and without any fuss, hence why the punishment was a fine and nothing more. It wasn't until it was brought up by the press months later that it became a big deal.

As for why it was a fine rather than a points deduction, I don't know the ins and outs of it all but it relates to which section of which rule was breached. Someone on Twitter posted a picture of the relevant ruling a while ago, which I can't find any more. They've came out and said nothing more will come of it now anyway, so Vinny Tan et all are wasting their time.

As for Liverpool throwing away their title chances, a lot of people are forgetting that they didn't even finish in the Champions League places last season, and although their fans will be undoubtedly gutted at what happened last night, the fact they've been able to push Man City and Chelsea as far as they have for the title is testament to the season they've had, so fair play to them. I'm sure if you'd have asked Liverpool fans at the start of the season if they'd have taken a 2nd place finish, 99% would have said of course. So long as they sort out their defence over the summer, there's no reason why they shouldn't be there or thereabouts again come the end of next season. Exciting times if you're a Liverpool supporter, and I firmly believe Rodgers is the right man for the job.

There is virtually no point in fining a Premier League club. Although fining Sunderland is worth slightly more than fining Man City and PSG for breaking FFP regulations, that is just moronic.

The elevated challenge that Liverpool and Rodgers will face in 14/15 is what will probably determine if Rodgers is simply a good manager or a great one that can go onto haul trophies for Liverpool in the long run. It really was their chance after the 3-2 win against City, after playing some really good, energetic football and practically everything going for them up to that point. 0-0 against Chelsea and a win at Palace would've most likely secured it for them, but Rodgers was too inexperienced and left themselves exposed to oppositions' own counter attacks, something that was relatively inconsequential for Liverpool until against Chelsea and Palace as their prolific goalscoring record has masked their poor defending throughout the season. Next season we'll probably see more teams drop back and not allow Liverpool to play their own game. Playing your own game of football at its core is most important, but sometimes you have to put forth reactive tactics when it's required. (obviously not all the time like Moyes did)

Who knows? Maybe one of (or both) Aston Villa and West Ham will do a gargantuan favor for Liverpool. But given City's home record and their recent status as a fortress, I'm highly doubting another upset.

Real Madrid ****s up yet again. If Atletico wins next week, it'll be mathematically impossible for them to win it.

...and to think that we shipped 5 with no reply in two matches against this lot. Wow, embarrassing.

Commiserations, but I suppose this is just confirmation of the inevitable.

We'll see you next season. :P

Looks like it's going to Atletico (or even Barcelona) unfortunately then. I hope Ronaldo is alright for the CL final.
