I apparently need to play some more to make sure Mega Altaria stays out of BL lol. I'm also a bit surprised that Mega Garde has more usage than Mega Zard Y. Yeah X is way more common but Mega Garde has been kinda rare after the early days of ORAS OU and I swear I've seen more Zard Y on the ladder than it.

Seems like a lot of the ladder matches are fast offensive teams with mScizor or mLop with the occasional mZard and mSable teams. Kinda surprised mons like Altaria and Metagross are as low as they are but I guess the meta is just different now. Doesn't look like Landorus is going to give up his top spot any time soon.

haven't played much recently at all but i am a little surprised scizor-mega is most used. i find it pretty overrated...gives too many dangerous pokemon free turns and isn't nearly as threatening as other mega pokemon. i quite dislike it.

anyway, not a whole lot terrible surprising except maybe breloom and altaria. have been waiting for a metagross-mega resurgence but not sure it's coming...it can be frustratingly inconsistent.

    grounds still run this town

    Ewww, Ground and Fire types...

Breloom needs to get back down to earth, and for the love of Arceus someone start using Ice or Water types (not both exempt Cloyster).

"Gyarados-Mega moved from OU to UU"
UHHH, THAT AIN'T BL KIDS... (unless they quickbanned it, which would not surprise me at all)
    EDIT: The quickban is real

And Altaria is low because M-Scizor screws it over unless you predict it.

I don't get the Breloom hype at all ?_? Outside of Ttar what does this thing even beat? Has the meta shifted so much that this thing is now viable again? I've tried using it but just cannot find success with it.

it does a good job pressuring defensive ground-types and the impossible-to-kill slowbro, which probably has something to do with it. in terms of meta shifts i have no idea but spore is amazing in general. i'm a bit confounded by it as well having not played very much at all but my guess is that it can take advantage of garchomp (tank), landorus-t, hippowdon, and gliscor very well?

tech loomer is picking up hype because it's a good offensive mon that pressures the opposing team just by existing (unless they have amoonguss or venu). mach also lets it check sand excadrill + lopunny, both of which are quite good right now and are difficult to handle on offensive teams thanks to insane speed + fake out on lop's end. using loomer means you don't necessarily -have- to run tank chomp to deal with those mons (even though tank chomp is still incredible).

it also has some flexibility between sash and LO and its 3rd / 4th moveslots. mach punch + bullet seed are absolutely necessary, and spore is also necessary but if you're running swords dance then you could drop it if you feel like the additional coverage merits the loss in utility. superpower / rock tomb / stun spore (sash) are all fairly viable depending on the composition of the rest of your team. run it with dudes that get checked by latis / torn / talon etc IMO since it's fairly good at breaking through and annoying everything not named amoonguss and venusaur

altaria has dropped because it lacks set-up opportunities in a meta that's fairly well prepared for clef. the special set is also mostly strictly worse than gardevoir iirc (i don't know if it is statistically true but garde is faster and breaks stall and that's good enough for me). also, it takes up a mega slot that is often preferred for other pokemon. it's definitely ~not~ dropping just because of one poke, but rather that the meta is unkind to it currently. it'll have its own renaissance eventually

So I've been out of the scene for a long long time, but looking over these stats I couldn't help but notice that the most popular mega is only on 8% of teams. Are there a lot of no-mega teams floating around?

I really don't understand the decision of separating Pokemon and their Mega Evolutions, because, like legendary forms, where they need to change outside of battles, Mega Evolutions can only be activated mid-battle, thus destroying the purpose of putting them on separate tiers.

you can read through the thread here for more information on how and why the decision was made :o

The argument in favor of tiering separately essentially boils down to: Metagross should be allowed in UU. Pidgeot and Beedrill should never have left PU. Doing tiers the way we're doing them now robs many of the lower tiers of needed diversity.
Isn't this actually a good thing for lower tiered Pokemon, who were suffering from lack of usage, and for higher tiers, which are in dire need of diversity due to complete dominance of certain types such as steel? Haven't they considered players who are new to competitive Pokemon who will refuse to play on the lower tiers or even use Pokemon from the lower tiers because of their inferiority to the Pokemon currently in the higher tiers?

it means nothing to higher tiers. tiering megas separately does not impact them in even the slightest way - the same pokemon would still be used, the same megas would still be just as effective, the metagame would evolve in the same way. tiering megas separately only impacts lower tiers, which simply get to have more pokemon.

to be more specific and to use an example: beedrill-mega is UU. beedrill-mega is a great pokemon, with very high speed (145) and attack (150) and adaptability (the ability, not the descriptor). regular beedrill, on the other hand, is a terrible pokemon, with stats that are half as good and is very much impossible to use effectively in any environment other than PU. without separating megas, beedrill and beedrill-mega are both considered UU. with separating megas, beedrill-mega is UU but beedrill itself is PU, allowing PU to have more pokemon available but not changing UU whatsoever (since UU wouldn't have used beedrill anyway).

so no, leaving tiers as they were is generally considered less appealing to the lower tiers. not everybody agrees on this, but the disagreements are not because of people who misunderstand the purpose of tiers (you can use pokemon from any tier below the one you're playing in!). some pokemon may be undervalued in higher tiers, but it is not "better" or "worse" to not play with them.

i suppose the point i am trying to make is that encouraging people to use lower tiered mons does not directly correlate to "diversity"; the best mons will always be the best mons and will continue to see more usage than the ones that are just OK. one of those lower tiered guys will eventually be seen as great (best example in recent memory is weavile), and it'll jump to OU like the rest. it's the life cycle of tiering.
