I hope I'm not too late to join the fun.

Time to make Lt. Surge proud. I guess I wanted to use a type that I'm not that used to, and its always fun to start a monotype challenge where the very first gym already gives a HUGE disadvantage to the Lightning monotype challenge ;)

  • Im gonna do single as im missing a few regions and I'm only gonna be doing this when my 3ds is charging at night or when I don't have it with me. Got Alpha Sappire recently and I'm gonna be focusing on that.

    Gemini the Careful Sableye (get it?) , ♂ , L 41
    Ability: Keen Eye
    Item: Spell Tag
Moves: Toxic, Knock Off, Shadow Sneak, Shadow Claw

I giggled like an idiot when I saw this.
    --------------------------------------------
I'm using my code to get Weedle in Alpha Sapphire, so I can use Mega Beedrill. (I can get the Beedrillite before the 8th gym)
Changing my mind since I remembered I can catch Kakuna after the 8th Badge, so I'll wait to use him in the E4.
I'd rather use the code to trade in a Bulbasaur at the beginning of the game after I get my Pokedex.

Just quoting this as a reminder.

And small update from earlier today.

    - I started AS and traded in my Bulbasaur at Level 1 after all the beginning stuff.
    - Caught Wurmple and hoped it to evolve into Cascoon, but got silcoon, so I boxed it and decided to wait and catch a Zubat before the 2nd Badge.
    - Saved at Petalburg Woods because I almost forgot I had to work today.

  • Happy New Year, Pokecommunity! I have implemented several new rule changes, so here I am to tell you a bit about what is new going into 2015.

-Freeplay Mode was added for people who hate rules. See Rule #12 for details.
-Rule #2 has been modified so that if a Pokemon type can't be obtained before the second badge, you may hack or trade in a Pokemon, instead of the third badge. This was done largely because of XY's early capacity to obtain Pokemon, meaning the average for when you should have your Pokemon has gone down. This means more games can now be played with one hack/trade in from the start!
-Rule #3 was merged into Rule #2, and so the rest of the rules have a new numbering.
-Mega Lati@s was added to the ban list. You may use the normal formes of Lati@s still though.
-Fairy Type is good to go for Ultimate Challenges now.
-Added Mega Evolution restriction on Rule #10, only 2 per team now.
    -ORAS end points added
-Exceptions list still needs more work but I added Platinum for Ice and Dragon type hack/trade ins.

  • I haven't seen any thread for questions so I'll drop it here and try to keep it short. I signed up for a monotype challenge and while my name isn't on the challengers list, I've already started my run and have beaten the first gym. Can I post updates or must I wait til my name's in the first post?

Questions can be asked in thread as long as they pertain to the challenge in question.

You can update any time, whether your name is on the Challenger list or not. It will be fairly soon though as I am in the process of updating it.

  • Thanks Wilhelm! I'll remember it for any future challenges.

    *Blue Water Monotype update 1*
-Picked squirtle, left Pallet with it at Lv8 and got a blackout from the first bug catcher poisoning it and me being too cheap to buy antidotes....
-Beat Brock with ease and made my way along the next route, beating minimal trainers.
-Squirtle evolved in Wartortle and I bought the Magikarp at the Mt. Moon PC. I don't want to spend too much time with only 1 pokemon on my team.
-Heading through Mt. Moon and switch training the Magikarp.

    Current team
    Mikey, Lv18 Squirtle
    Sushi, Lv8 Magikarp

Finally reached Couriway Town, with a quick detour to Terminus Cave for a Dusk Stone. Sadly, Yveltal is barred from the team and must languish in the Box.

Just one more badge to go!

  • So much updates.

    Update: 2 and 3

    Update 5:
    Spoiler:

    UPDATE 6!:
    Spoiler:

Just took on the Elite Four and on my way to defeat the Champ and end the whole run (So i can finally go back to playing Pokemon Omicron since I haven't had much love for that in a while). I need to take a rest (pun intended) before I take on my Rival (appropriately named Finn so i can take out my frustrations against Adventure Time, not that I hate the show, but I hate it when my girlfriend forces me to watch it with her when I'm not in the mood to do so ;) )

    Spoiler:

    Vs Lorelai:

    Vs Bruno:
    Spoiler:

    VS Agatha
    Spoiler:

    Vs Lance: Oh boy
    Spoiler:

    FINAL FINAL FINAL UPDATE!!!!

HOLY SHIT. I FINALLY DID IT! I Finally beat the Rival (Finn) after so much retries, soft resets, and taking the inevitable loss because of the lack of levels!

I decided to do some grinding by doing Bill's little Side quest in One, Two, and Three island where it contained monsters that were excellent sources of EXP compared to that of Victory Road (too many Onix) and Pokemon Mansion (Too low of levels). That proved to be the best alternative farming area. The trainers also have pokemon that give decent EXP when defeated and the extra cash was meant to buy the most amount of Full Restores and Hyper Potions, as well as Revives.

My team, and yes the movesets are really bad.
    Spoiler:

    Play-by-Play Commentary of the battle:

    Spoiler:

    The Monotype Challenge

I believed in the BjergerBird. Also, I never knew that the first Electric Mon after the starter pikachu would deliver the last blow to end the challenge. I feel so relieved and so alive to finally end the run and make Lt. Surge proud.

    Final Thoughts:

EV Training in a Monotype challenge, if ever is efficiently and extremely possible, helps in a very very long run! Lightning Mons benefit a lot from SPATK and SPEED EVs which greatly helped. FRLG's Only GOOD SPATK EV training spot was in the Lavender Tower healing pad floor where Gastlies and Haunters thrive. SPEED EVs are extracted from MANYYYYYYYY ares (especially One, Two, and Three Island which was my last place to EV Train)

I never ever used Roar in regular playthroughs of any pokemon game until this monotype challenge. Now I see how GOOD Roar and its related move Whirlwind can be if used properly. (Roaring Rhydon over and over until he was the last mon to beat or at least the 2nd to the last thing to KO). I found a new appreciation for moves that I never ever used.

As for endpoints, Its always the best to spend all usable cash for every top tier healing item to prepare for the final challenges (Elite 4 and Champ), since I wouldn't consider playing the post-game in most challenges anyway.

FIGHTING ULTIMATE CHALLENGE: YELLOW UPDATE #3

    -Got lost in Seafoam Islands
    -Went through Cinnabar Mansion
    -Beat Blaine
    -took out Giovanni for good
-made it through Victory Road with minimal fuss

Seeing as I have 4 Pokemon, I plan to use only one against each Elite 4 member. Let's see how that goes!

Jason (Hitmonlee) lvl 55 vs Lorelei:
    Spoiler:

Undertaker (Machoke) lvl 55 vs Bruno:
    Spoiler:

Mayweather (Primeape) lvl 57 vs Agatha:
    Spoiler:

Royce (Poliwrath) lvl 56 vs Lance:
    Spoiler:

To be honest, all of that went better than expected. I did no such handicapping against my rival, and I actually had to reload my save once. Alakazam was actually impossible if Royce isn't set up.

    Team vs Rival:

All done and a parade in my honour too. Got to say though there were trainers that I really struggled against or rather specific Pokemon. Siebold's Gyarados made me pay for lack of electric-type attacks and the Champion's Mega Gardevoir had her Moonblast.

Here's my final team and some little thoughts.
