The Nintendo DSi Discussion Thread

I bet they'll release older Pokémon games for GB/C/A a la virtual console then. Who knows, maybe if you have those, DPP will be able to pick them up from the SD card as if it were the GBA slot.

The only part of this that is really worth writing home for IMO is the "DSiWare" news. Serebii speculated that we could be looking at Gameboy VC titles, and I tend to second that thought. Think about it, we have three prices: 200, 500, and 800 (and 0, but that's not important here). 200 for classic Game Boy, 500 for GBC, and 800 for some GBA, perhaps? If that actually happens, then we could even be seeing the old Pokemon games revived here, since it could connect to D/P/P from inside the same system. They would just have to edit the old games to be compatible, sort of like what they did with Pokemon Snap on the Virtual Console.

...Egh, that didn't come out right. I guess I'll have to translate later.

You just translated it for me, Lightning. :)

Look, we know that the DSi will be getting its own version of the Shop Channel, and we know the prices. Looking at the prices of current VC games, these match up nicely to what GB/GBC/GBA games would be priced at if they were to be released. Considering that this is a handheld, as well, the premise of finding a GB VC for the system isn't exactly far out there. So, on that, we could be seeing Gold, Silver, and Crystal released for such, only with stats and everything edited so that the Pokemon are compatible with D/P/P's EV system and everything (hey, they did it with Pokemon Snap to make it compatible with the Wii Message Board, so why not?). Then, as Lightning mentioned, we have them compatible with the DS games so that we can transfer the Pokemon over. It could also be evidence for seeing the Stadium games come out on the Wii VC, with the same compatibility.

Of course, the other features of the DSi (camera, internet browser, multimedia player) are nothing exactly special here. ...You know, come to think of it, Nintendo is just trying to replicate the success of the Nintendo Wii in their new handheld (as if they needed to). Think about it: we have a new system relying on pre-packaged abilities, a downloadable internet browser, and an already-existing game base for initial sales, not to mention the obvious VC copy. They're just taking the Nintendo Wii and applying its "special" features to the DS, which I guess has a certain logic to it.

Dialga, Palkia and Giratina in GSC lol...

No, think more like the Time Machine situation in the original. Or just an extension of Pal Park.

Mm, the stats would have to be edited while they're on the way to your DPP cartridge. So everything would stay the same but then in the transfer they'd have to add the extra stats, abilities, natures, etc. I guess it's not much of a problem but I still just think it makes far more sense to just revamp and re-release the game at full price. :[ Regardless of the method, this does make me confident that we'll be seeing G/S on the DS somehow in the next year or so.

edit @ Icicle Dance: It wouldn't be trading if they don't remake it. Retroactively adding in ALL the new Pokémon, plus all the battle changes, etc. would be so much work that it would make more sense to remake it entirely since those aren't small edits, they're rewrites to the system from the ground up. It would have to be Pal Park or... even mystery gift or something, but I'd place my bets on Pal Park.

DSware is really all I see as far as benefits from this upgrade. And until some really worthwhile titles come out, I just don't see the point in spending that much money. (I mean, if you want to to act as a camera/music player, just spend the money on a PDA or something--it'll be better quality in both sections, not to mention thinner and easier to carry around.)

I was actually thinking more of editing the stats (EVs, IVs, etc) in the actual G/S/C, but natures & abilities would be something that would require a full update, wouldn't it? Eh, I guess that idea wouldn't pan out so well, after all.

...And I realize this is going off from the system itself, so:

I know this is stating the obvious, but we'll see some DSi titles coming out shortly after that.

...Heh, like Eye Toy DSi. XD

Mm, even editing in stats for battle, they'd really have to edit in the new physical/special attack stats as well, I would think. And then if they do that, they might as well add in abilities so that battles are identical to how they are in the newer games. And then why not go ahead with natures? By then you're just snowballing and it's not worth it. XD; BUT YEAH, WE ARE GETTING OFF TOPIC. *shuts up*
The only good thing about the EyeToy games is that the Eyetoy itself makes a damn good webcam. XD; The first thing I thought of when I was trying to brainstorm some games that would be DSi exclusive was, um, face training. :| You know that DS game that came out in Japan that trains you to smile or something? That'd work well on the DSi. But I can't think of any non-gimmicky or non-casual things that would work well with the new features.

Unless they wanted to do something like webcamming with your DS to online friends registered in the system. But I think it's just a camera, not a video camera, so that wouldn't work. 8/

This might be true, but if it is, hopefully it will not have no dumb features such as using to stylus, speech recognition would be cool.

The DSi is real. Well, prototypes anyway. What's wrong with using the stylus?

I agree; I like the stylus˜

Anyways, it looks pretty cool, but I think I'll stick to my big blue brick (The first DS) for just now. And no GBA slot? But, it has the internet and other new and cool features so…

I really like this idea, and yeah, I'm almost completely positive now that they'll make it possible to download/buy (lame..) GBA and past games. I don't know if I'll get this as soon as it appears. Though I'm sure it'll be pretty cool and most likely expensive X_x

Has anyone discussed price ranges? If it offers internet, webcam capabilities, video gaming, speakers, and the works...what might that translate to?

@jakex: ...you mean "two" styluses, right? Watch your spelling/grammar. :(

@Eon-Rider, Capi: I think he meant two styluses. I dunno why anyone would assume the DS would no longer use any stylus.

@Volkner's Apprentice: I didn't pay much attention to the US conference but it'll retail for about $180 USD in Japan so I assume it won't be much different here.

Well.... You were right, Nintendo DS 2 has already been announced, it's called DSi. Lame, huh? no GBA slot! just see at Serebii.

Oh, that makes sense.

People REALLY have to stop referencing Serebii.

Guys... I'm just kidding... =]

Yeah, there nothing wrong with it. And DS's signature is stylus(and dual screen), so they can't took stylus away.=]

Do people actually check Serebii for Nintendo news? Wow, look out Kotaku and Joystiq. :p

The DSi looks fine and yes, I'm going to throw out my DS for the Dsi. Same thing I did with the GameCube for the Wii.

Off-topic: Serebii. Isn't. A. Site to use as proof of something. Try to use a press conference or a site actually dedicated to it. Or maybe even the site that Serebii referenced.
