I think it's a nice touch that squirtle has black glasses as a held item when it joins your team after the squirtle squad event in the ROM hack Ash Gray. It really makes it just like the anime!

The first season of the anime is edgier than you think. In the original Japanese Squirtle didn't threaten to dye Misty's hair purple in the episode where the squad holds them hostage. That's just the English dub. What he really said was that he'd kill Misty if Ash broke his promise to return.
