Hippopotas was needed to save the day in the Hoopa movie. The elemental typings had to be combined in a certain way to make a new prison bottle, and he represented the ground typing that was required.

First time finding them in the wild I kept finding lots of male ones and when seeing the first female one I mistook it for a shiny xD

When I first saw a female Hippwdon I thought it was a shiny too because it was this charcoal color, and I remembered this Pokemon being sandy brown. This line has some of the most striking gender differences of all, at least visually.
