Why do you think Gamefreak decides to create a third version of a game, to go along with the pair that they released a year or so earlier? This may not be the case for Generation 5+, but we had several "third version" games that were released after a pair was - Crystal, Emerald, Platinum for main series games and and Mystery Dungeon Sky for spinoffs. Do you think Gamefreak just does this for the money? What do you think third versions add to the series that wouldn't have been revealed otherwise?

Personally I think it's to add new features not present in the first 2 games. All of the third games add something extra that just improves on them, wether its something simple like Pikachu following you in Yellow or the extra post-game challenges of the Battle Frontier in Emerald, there was always a good reason to get the third game.

I didn't really like Black 2 and White 2. I feel they should have just made Gray Version, because to me the third installments are typically the "ultimate" of the Generation, and it just felt unfinished to me. I could say a lot about how Gen V lacked, but I'll save that for another day.

I really hope that after ORAS comes out, we get Z version with Zygarde as the mascot. It sounds generic, I know, but I'm hopeful.

ANYWAY, back to the main point. I think that the third installments are meant to be the cherry on the cake. They add everything that lacked and beef up your original experience, working as stepping stones into the next generation with whatever features they introduce.

Omw no. Those right there are just internet meme fodder. I was thinking what they'd call the 3rd game after Black and White and all that came to mind besides that grey is the most boring color ever was that there'd be memes called ''50 shades of Pokemon''. O.o
With Pokemon Z, it sounds alot like a Dragonball-themed hack...

I suppose one reason would be because of money. Another, I believe, is that they just simply want to add more into the game and allow people to have a better experience playing. Whether we like it or nor, third versions are superior, usually, and having played them could give you more fun of a memory, so to speak. Well, maybe not fun, but you get the point!

I always had a feeling of being "complete" when I played "third" versions of certain games. I don't know why the original two versions always had something lacking and I didn't feel complete by playing just them, so I was mostly getting those "third" versions. I remember when I played Mystery Dungeon Time for the first time and then MD Sky, it was like completely new level, I had more fun playing Sky. Same thing going with Diamond/Pearl/Platinum. Platinum was just the top of the cake of my Pokemon gaming.

I strongly believe that developers had those kinds of players in mind, to add more things to COMPLETE the whole thing.

Also money money money! What else?!

Yeah, above is also another reason why I find myself getting third versions. While I don't fully get the game done (i.e., finishing PokéDex), it still gives me a feeling of completion, which I like.

The third version adds new stuff to the game, like extra features (Emerald), or changes the story and improves on features (Platinum). Like Recluse here, I always felt the first 2 games of a set weren't really perfected, which is why I like third versions so much. They pretty much fix what's wrong with the originals while adding their own thing into the mix.

Apart from it being a marketing strategy, of course.

I think GameFreak does third versions of games to address any unanswered questions in the originals and to add in enhanced features like move tutors. In Black 2/White 2, the ghost girl's origins are explained in further detail, for example.

I mean anything they do is money based. The third versions are pretty much just recycled material with a few tweaks. I would imagine it doesn't take much for them to produce a "new" third game when it's practically the same thing. Third versions tend to just add a little more back story and some new characters. Most of those things easily could of been implemented in the first two games.
