I'm kinda hoping she'll go with him; I still think Dawn is the best female protagonist, but Serena is a very solid second.

187.

I actually quite second that. (And to those who dare say not so, FITE ME j/k)

however, should that ever happen, we know what will happen:
Spoiler:

I don't watch the anime that much anymore, but while I think that Serena should stay, I don't think she will stay. Maybe she'll have a "surprise visit" in to Alola?

Strange to see Koalas on Hawaii, but whatever... it's cute! I find the doggy a bit weird, rock types aren't supposed to be fluffy. Are they?
Have you tried glueing Herdier hair to a Roggenrola?

I don't see why they need to change the supporting cast every region now, though...I mean, Brock lasted for four seasons, if we ignore the Orange Islands. I'd love to have Dawn back, although that's about as likely as Misty at this point.

On a minor note, I hope you can change and/or remove the hat on the female protagonist; it looks like the Feathers McGraw's glove hat from Wallace and Gromit...

190

I like the male protagonist but personally the female one leaves much to be desired.

191.

I'll be choosing to be female regardless because you know that she'll have more clothes than the male.

194

They could, but they usually like to play safe with the Gym Leader and female protagonist as the ideal choices. I'm sure the only Ash companion to not have been a game's female protagonist or a Gym Leader was Max.

195

...no, we don't need another Max. Definitely don't need another Max. Noooo.

196

Max was a Gym Leader? I didn't watch the RS series long enough to know that. I didn't really like his character tbh, May was much better.

197

No, he just wasn't a female game character or a Gym Leader. Max was the only anime original companion Ash has had asides Tracey...who we all seem to forget about for some reason.

198

Tracey is so forgettable to the point I just forgot him there. He and Max are the only anime original companions of Ash, but I'm guessing the Alola group will be the common trend of Ash + SM female protagonist + Gym Leader.

Oh, I forget about Tracey. Him and his bag that can hold 40.5 sketchbooks at once.

I don't want to get emotionally invested in new protagonists just to have them leave at the end of the season again; that combined with Ash's reset button is one of the reasons I've really struggled to keep up with the anime...especially since the Sinnoh seasons, which were amazing.

202

Sinnoh was the last season that I watched all the way through, and it was just so good that I didn't want to see it end. Especially when what followed afterward was the B/W series, and I've heard some not-pleasant things about it.

The X/Y anime has changed from that. I've heard that it's actually really good. But then the cycle begins again, since I'm sure for the S/M series, Ash's knowledge of Pokemon will disappear and we'll have to get used to new protagonists. And like Meloetta, that's why I don't keep up with the anime either, because I'm tired of it going in the cycle of: good season -> great season -> bad season -> good season and so on.

I love the SM female protagonist's design so I can imagine how adorable she'll look in the anime, if they managed to give that super-cute treatment to the likes of Dawn, May and Serena already.

Yay, looks like we've got more people here! Welcome to everyone joining us! :3

Haha, looks like you've triggered the ghost cleansing! Congrats on becoming a Super Ghost! :D

I think there's a general double standard against the Best Wishes series, though. The series indeed has some massive flaws, but a noticeable portion of the perceived "badness" is highly exaggerated. I'm pretty sure a giant portion of the older fanbase quit solely because Ash's intelligence made him painful to watch for most viewers, combined with Brock being permanently gone (for the first time), and Team Rocket being competent rather than funny, along with a really cringey English dub. (Believe me, those are the kinds of complaints I see practically everywhere, while constructive criticism is present, but less common.)

That aside, though, the series did make good attempts to improve the viewing experience. While it still retained some of the typical episodic fillers, the BW series took a more "plot-driven" approach than the older series, which made it more suspenseful and less formulaic. The first 22 episodes had a LOT of plot-setup in the background, all to prepare for a really climatic war between Team Rocket and Team Plasma, which unfortunately got cancelled by a dreaded earthquake. ARRGGGGGGGGGGH! If anything, I think that's what killed the BW series. After the war episodes got cancelled, there was never a mention of Team Plasma (or the war itself) again, until 100 episodes later when they wrote a new plotline entirely (and thus retconning the war). Despite that, they continued making more arcs with heavy setup (like the Meowth/Subway Arc, the Meloetta Arc, and I think a few tournaments?), but those were noticeably weaker and lacked the impact that the War Arc would have had. It's a shame, really. And then one day, the writers suddenly stopped caring about Best Wishes, so they decided to end the series with a 20-episode uneventful filler arc. The end. Best Wishes probably had much weaker character development then the other series, but I'd still rank the overall plot higher than the Original Series, at least. (Whoops, I kinda rambled there. Sorry!)

But yeah, XY is reeeeeally good, haha! I sorta doubt Ash will reset in SM, though, because the only time he actually reset was in BW. However, I am starting to have second thoughts about that. To me, the XY series feels like a direct sequel to Best Wishes (rather than "oh, it's just the next series"), and I honestly cannot picture Alola connecting with XY and BW in the same manner. So maybe he could reset... Only time will tell, I guess!

Honestly, the only thing I like about Best Wishes were the constant tournaments. They never turned out the way you expected them to and, as dull and unimaginative as the rivals for that season were, it was nice to see them all gathered in one place and facing off against one another. It gave me a little hope that the Unova League would be interesting...but then Cameron came along and, well, look at how THAT turned out.

...you're far kinder on the series than I am, though. But then, I was bitter throughout BW for the way the Sinnoh seasons ended...I mean, a trainer with a Darkrai AND a Latios?! That was beyond cheap. It was amusing that they felt Ash was so good - and he was - that it needed Legendaries to take him out of the competition, haha. God only knows what they're going to use this time to stop him winning, considering he used Diantha as a punching bag recently...
