OVERVIEW
Weird Type Fun is a simple rom hack with an even simpler concept: to have even series veterans be confused about type matchups. With 18 all new types and a completely reimagined pokédex to match, WTF makes the ever familiar Kanto a little bit less so.
While WTF sticks mostly to the core FireRed story and structure, some characters and lore has been changed around to keep things fresh. Event only areas (aka Navel Rock and Birth Island) have been made accessible through gameplay and a couple of new locations and small events have been added in.
FEATURES
- All types have been replaced with new alternatives. Type matchups do not mirror original.
- 400-ish pokémon, assembled from up to gen 9 (thus including Hisui and Paldea). Also includes a couple of beta pokémon and fakemon.
- Each pokémon has been redesigned to fit its new type (think Fool's Gold, except more nonsensical)
- Moves and items updated to match the new types
- Mostly faithful Gen III Kanto experience with some new twists

DOWNLOAD
Spoiler:
Version 1.93
Download the patch here!
I have now made the version with phys/spec split and other QoL updates the main version. If you update to this version from a previous non-QoL build, make sure to deposit your TMs in a PC and save inside a Pokémon Center or Mart before updating your game file, as well as check that all your game and save files have the same name. Thank you to everyone in Pebbler Platoon for making this all possible, my little rom hack is growing up...!
I'm also starting work on a big balance update. I will avoid bumping the number up to 2.0 before that, so any patches until then will only contain bug fixes (as opposed to QoL additions or such) and will remain in the 1.9s.
The download is a zip file that includes a ups patch as well as a type effectiveness chart, a spreadsheet of pokémon locations and evolution methods as well as a copy of the list of known issues
If anyone still needs the vanilla version (without physical/special split, infinite TMs etc), you can still find it here. It has some but not all of the non-QoL fixes listed above.
KNOWN ISSUES
This is very much a first rom hack situation. A funny sprite project got out of hand and I learned rom hacking on the go.
There is the occasional oddity/issue with the hack I have yet to figure out how to fix (some of them directly caused by my blunders early on in the project, haha). Nothing game-breaking as far as testing has revealed, but I will list what I know here for reference.
Spoiler:
Some issues (the TM icon colour issue and weird directional arrows) I simply did not deem important enough to delay the "release" of this patch. As for the more complex ones, I will continue to investigate but would also be super grateful for any tips in regards to fixing them.
- Girl player character's palette messes up in the opening sequence if you give the rival a custom name. Won't affect the rest of the game.
- Shrinking sprite also gets pixelated
- Rival walks up to the wrong ball when choosing starter, gets the right pokémon though
- Rival's first optional battle near Viridian doesn't trigger
- Pokédex automatically records some late game legendaries as seen
- Teachy TV can crash the game when used, hence it is not given out.
- When giving the items Whipped Dream, Faller Stone, Gemstone, Plain Stone, Shiny Stone, Razor Claw, Hourglass, Sweet Heart, Loud Whistle, Chaos Stone, Premium Gem or Link Cable for pokemon to hold, you can end up with some pretty glitchy effects (anything from item duplication to turning boxed pokemon to bad eggs). So play around with that at your own risk
These items can be used and deposited to the PC like normal as long as they're not attached to pokémon.
- Several trainers have pokémon they're not intended to have, mainly some rival fights
- The move Camouflage has rather nonsensical effects
- Dodydra's front sprite's beak does...stuff...when it uses Fusion Dance
- TM icon colours don't match types in bag
- Void type moves are much weaker than they should be based on their base power

COMING SOMEDAY, EVENTUALLY, MAYBE
Spoiler:

- More of Johto made accessible
- Other new areas and events
Thanks for your interest in my silly little rom hack! It was small and broken in the beginning, but with the help of this awesome community it's growing into its own!
Is there a type chart that has been made for this? I know spoilers for some folks but would be cool to have - I can try to make one from my playthrough and you can laugh when I get it wrong?
