FireRed hack: Weird Type Fun v1.93 (complete type swap hack)

[PokeCommunity.com] Weird Type Fun v1.93 (complete type swap hack)

OVERVIEW

Weird Type Fun is a simple rom hack with an even simpler concept: to have even series veterans be confused about type matchups. With 18 all new types and a completely reimagined pokédex to match, WTF makes the ever familiar Kanto a little bit less so.

While WTF sticks mostly to the core FireRed story and structure, some characters and lore has been changed around to keep things fresh. Event only areas (aka Navel Rock and Birth Island) have been made accessible through gameplay and a couple of new locations and small events have been added in.

FEATURES

  • All types have been replaced with new alternatives. Type matchups do not mirror original.
  • 400-ish pokémon, assembled from up to gen 9 (thus including Hisui and Paldea). Also includes a couple of beta pokémon and fakemon.
  • Each pokémon has been redesigned to fit its new type (think Fool's Gold, except more nonsensical)
  • Moves and items updated to match the new types
  • Mostly faithful Gen III Kanto experience with some new twists

CREDITS

  • Original design of fusions Dustata & Furran as well as fakemon Bloff & Hemocula by Wish
  • Awesome banner art by Wish
  • Fakemon Nanner is a direct reference to this Drawfee video
  • Leagues of support from Pebbler Platoon, especially Sadfish, with testing, fixing bugs and other issues, your help has already made the hack so much more polished!

KNOWN ISSUES

This is very much a first rom hack situation. A funny sprite project got out of hand and I learned rom hacking on the go.

There is the occasional oddity/issue with the hack I have yet to figure out how to fix (some of them directly caused by my blunders early on in the project, haha). Nothing game-breaking as far as testing has revealed, but I will list what I know here for reference.

Thanks for your interest in my silly little rom hack! It was small and broken in the beginning, but with the help of this awesome community it's growing into its own!

Is there a type chart that has been made for this? I know spoilers for some folks but would be cool to have - I can try to make one from my playthrough and you can laugh when I get it wrong?

There's a type chart that comes with the download, but making your own without looking at it seems like a fun challenge.

Super fun hack, lots of neat ideas and very cool sprite work and designs. Great job, hope you get to finish working on this.

Sorry for late replies, been sick.

Reporting that Aimbot on the tm menu has trampolines description.

Also if tms are infinite then maybe move tutors should be as well? Its not a big deal but it just seems odd in my opinion.
Thanks! I'll get all misaligned move descriptions fixed for 2.0, hopefully!

Infinite move tutors is a good idea too, I'll look into making that happen o7

Thanks! That's how I thought that the saves would work, but I wanted some confirmation. That's definitely a good change for the stone evolutions, they've always been weirdly handled and its always been hard to judge when to use them. I think an additional thing you could add to documentation is which fishing rods can catch which Pokemon, the document is a little vague on which can actually be caught.

Speaking of fishing, I was on Route 22 (i think, the one next to the pokemon league), and using the old rod to fish stuff up, and every single time was a high level Lumineon. Like, level 38s. Its pretty consistently ben Dunsparce and Zigzagoon in every other body of water with the old rod, so I don't feel like this is an intentional encounter.
Definitely not intentional! Thanks, I'll get that fixed. I also plan to add rod info into 2.0 documentation!

Found another move with an incorrect description, Shortcircuts description in the summery menu indicates it has beat ups effect even though its a no miss move.
Thanks! It seems like something has caused the move descs to shift ahead by 1 in indices which is why this is such a prevalent issue. Since moves are being revamped for 2.0 anyway hopefully that'll rid the hack of this issue too 😅

I beat the Pokémon league and 3 of the 5 trainers have return on their Pokémon but the pokemon aren't at high happiness, so its a not very good move, otherwise it was a fun time, Agatha staying is a bit odd but she's also my favourite of the kanto elite 4 so I'm glad that if it was anyone it was her
Ah, good to know! I'll make sure to give them something else in 2.0!

So uh... how do you go to Alpha Islet again? Can't seem to find a way.
There's a cave exit in "Beta Ruins" aka Altering Cave in vanilla. It's on Six Island. Hope that helps!

Hello I have been having trouble trying to get the game to download do I need a specific version of Pokémon fire red to patch it onto or what
you need to look for a firered v 1.0 rom - most easily googleable are v 1.1
Yep, it requires 1.0 unfortunately. I started working on the hack with an old rom I had lying around, not knowing there were different versions around.

So far I've been enjoying the hack, my only real criticism is the amount of easy sleep affliction opponents have early on can be a bit much and make the game frustrating if you don't run a faster team.

Also, one suggestion. The move Hades Trap, how it mentions being trapped in the lights, have you considered renaming it to Dead Lights? If you did it would be a perfect reference to IT by Stephen King, given Pennywise traps you within its deadlights and immobilizes you with them.
That's a good point! I should definitely give the early game another look, too many opponents resist the beast type there as well when that is the primary attacking move for many obtainable mons at that point hah.

That's a fun idea for the move rename, too! I don't see why not!

OK so I'm probably just being dumb, but when it says that the other starters are available on Route 21, is there anything you need to do special to get them to show up or are they just really rare cause I've been at this for a while and still can't find em. If it helps I'm in the postgame cause I thought that might help.
Ah, that's another documentation error. They were available there once upon a time but not in the released versions. The only way to get them right now is through Alpha Islet. So sorry!

Is there a type chart that has been made for this? I know spoilers for some folks but would be cool to have - I can try to make one from my playthrough and you can laugh when I get it wrong?

Yes, a type chart is included in the download! I can add it to the top post as well.

Thank you so much ^^

Love the game! The mons are so well designed. Only question I have is are object01 and ??? meant to have no moves? I thought it might be intentionally but just wondering

I had this same issue on real hardware (open_agb_firm). You can safely open the save in an emulator and toss the item, then transfer the save back, and you should be fine

Hey! Loving the fangame so far. Are you going to eventually release a resource pack with all of the pokemon sprites ingame?

I've been loving the game so far! Was just wondering if there's an online pokedex with photos of them? I found the one linked in the file itself but was just wondering if there was one with photos. Ps it's a great game so far and i adore all the design changes!

This game is amazing, I wonder if you'll put other mons in the future, I'd be glad to see them when they're in game if that was the case!

Another thing: what are Dracozolt and Zygarde based on? They look very interesting and I'd like to know.

Hello!

First, thanks for this fantastic game. I am having an absolute blast playing and trying to figure out the type matchups. Huge props for the sprites in particular, which are truly some of the best I've ever seen.

I just had a question regarding Ekans/Arbok: I had stumbled upon them in a random Pokémon-related Discord server a few days ago, and I remember Arbok being based on
Spoiler:
That was a huge personal incentive to pick up the game lol, however I haven't found them aywhere so far, and no Trainer using them either. Where are they? Is it post-game only? I'd love to feature it on my team, and would be bummed if I happened to just miss it like that! I'm just done exploring the first 3 Sevii Island atm.

Thanks again and have a nice day :)

Edit: just realized that 1. documentation is actually available in the download and 2. there were updates with infinite TMs and such?? Or maybe I was careless and mistakenly downloaded the "OG gen III" version?? I mean whatever, everything is fine now :) Imma keep that post here because the part where I say it's fantastic it still true haha

Thank you SO much enwaitea, for one of the most beautiful and exciting pokemon-inspired experiences in recent memory. this game truly has brought back the feeling of playing Pokemon for the first time in a way that the official games cannot. having 18 new types to play with and 324(?) type interactions to figure out by hand (I've been keeping notes, I *never* do that!) is refreshing in a way I never expected to encounter again.
Also, I have immense respect for your dedication to updating the game, especially after it has gained more attention than you expected.

Now, some notes: in the Town Map, many locations have old descriptions like Machoke Tunnel saying it was built by Diglett.
The Fame Checker also has old descriptions and sprites for at least the first two gym leaders.
You might've mentioned this already, but it doesn't say anywhere (early) in-game that TMs are Infinite--or if it did, I just didn't realize until reading this thread lol.
The Dex sometimes displays two pages for a single mon when browsing by habitat: Kricketot, Larvesta, Aron, Sobble, Girafarig, and Turtonator are my current examples.
Is Tiggen wanted for a trade somewhere? I thought I remembered an NPC who wanted one, but it's not in the documentation, so now I'm not sure
Lastly, an idea I had: would it be possible to have an in-game Type Chart? Specifically, one that updates as you experience those type interactions and/or can be updated manually? The last half of that might be more work than makes sense for you haha

Also I love Drawfee too! :)
EDIT: I used the wrong spoiler type lol

How the hell do i play it LOL

Top 3 are shinies✨ ^.^
Wish the names were changed to reflect the types, like having Umbreon as a witch type is cool, but instead, having like hexeon, or Blaziken as Godtalon or some shizz.
Loved the experience, thank you for an awesome playthrough!

I don't know if anyone else has reported this - i did catch a glimpse of reports for other TMs having wrong descriptions and that there's a plan to fix all of them but just throwing it out there to make sure:
The item description for TM19 Storm Sphere says "A Magic spell summons a lightning ball and may paralyze" but the in-summary description says "An attack that inflicts damage and also drains HP" (get a very strong suspicion the latter is the wrong one lol - haven't taught/used the move yet, came to the forum immediately after seeing)
And speaking of Storm Sphere, at the Celadon prize redemption counter, the clerk who sells TMs, one of the TMs (I believe the 3rd one down in the list) is wrongly listed as "so you want to purchase STORM SPHERE?" but it was a different TM after purchase (forgot the name; doesn't matter, obviously the correct and intended TM, seeing as Storm Sphere is the prize for beating Opal)

Loving the hack so far by the way! Sprite work is amazing, and other than a few blips here and there, it's well put together especially for someone's first attempt at making rom hacks - I almost don't believe it's your first time!

Oh gosh! This rom so far is great! Theres a lot of adorable sprites and weird ones, lmao! Do you happen to have a made type chart? If not, I would love to help out and create a docs similar to PokemonDB! Or somewhat similar! 😄😄
