I do like having two rivals: Cheren being the stereotypical rival of a game like Gary, Silver, and sorta like Barry. He has the attitude like Gary and is kind of a jerk, but is still a good guy who wants to be the best and is the main rival out of the two since he gets the starter that is element-wise better. Bianca is also a fun rival who is a little dumb and empty headed but is caring and does try. It's good to actually have a rival that you have the element advantage (she has the advantage over Cheren though and maybe made a good decision choosing hers second and to be the one better the Cheren cause she saw him as more of a threat cause of his knowledge). The first gym was fun cause both you, Cheren and Bianca has a disadvantage except when getting the monkey.
N was a fun semi-rival/ semi-villain. He was like Silver cause Silver is related to Team Rocket (Giovanni is his dad) and N is a head of Team Plasma but Ghetsis is the actual leader. He has a good heart, but is confused and misguided which made him like an anti-hero. I hope he has a bigger backstory in the 3rd installment (Gray or whatever).
Plus having it based in New York City was fun and I also like seeing all the diversity in ethnic groups. You had Italians (those guys in suits who wear sunglasses, mainly in Castelia City), Puerto Ricans (the female Rangers looked Puerto Rican), African Americans (Lenora, Iris, Marshal, male Psychics, Dancers, Football players, Basketball players, and male Backpackers) and other ethnic groups, and as an African American, I was happy to see that in Pokemon.
