What generation will this game be a part of?

So, it's been confirmed that we have a brand new set of Pokémon main series games coming out this year! But, will these be Generation 7, or will they be a part of generation 6? At this stage we don't know much of anything, so share your thoughts and speculations!

    New Game or Continue?

So, a lot of people have been speculating that, given the small number of new Pokemon introduced in Gen VI with X and Y, the Generation will be split between titles, with a second half coming at some point in a new game. Zygarde's new forms in particular - which are in the anime, but not the games - seem to suggest that Nintendo aren't quite done with Gen VI yet either.

What are your thoughts? Will Sun and Moon mark the start of the seventh generation, or are you expecting a continuation with the missing half of Gen VI? Which would you prefer?

Hard to say at the moment. I'd say there's still plenty of plot-holes in generation 6 which would be the reason for these games to be part of that. On the other hand the release date is many months away with a simultaneous worldwide release similarly to X & Y, not to mention the fact that it is two brand new games which usually indicates a new generation. Personally I think these could be part of generation 7, but sequels to X & Y just like Gold and Silver were to Red and Blue.

Not doing a third version of a game feels totally not like Pokémon. However, the titles don't follow an analogy with X and Y, not even to the region's lore (unless you were to count life=sun and death=moon), so I expect it to be part of a new story and region, a new generation.

Just by looking at the way the lineup was when he showed the years of release of MAIN games and then suddenly "AND IN 2016" implies that it is going to be Generation 7 as opposed to 6.5, as at that point they didn't show any sequels/remakes (only was shown later on).

I really hope this is a new game, but yeah something tells me that it will tie in with Kalos somehow with Zygarde and such. The Concept art reminds me a lot about Kalos, after all. I woudn't be too distressed if that was the case, but I'd still prefer a new adventure. <33

We may get Z or the rest of gen 6 in the future but from the pictures show, these are definitely generation 7 games, IMO. This excites me a lot really! The concept art of the new bird Pokemon is intriguing :O

As cliche as it is to want this, it'd be cool if S&M had Kalos as a continuation like GS had Kanto, so it could act as both the new generation and the third entry to Gen 6

After seeing the graphics and concept art, I'm heavily hinting this to be 7th Gen and not another game tied to Kalos. That's just my two cents though.

I think this is definitely 7th Generation, looking at the images and concept art that was shown. The trainer models in the overworld look way more advanced and are not so compact anymore, in fact they now seem more like the overworld in games like Colosseum and XD.

I feel like it's going to be a continuation of Gen 6 considering there's one animated wire frame scene which looks like Fletchling, but I won't dismiss the possibility of Gen 7 either.

My gut is telling me 7th generation.

I mean we have Magearna too, which wasn't found on any existing games so Sun & Moon will probably be where it'll make it's debut.

Not to mention the way they announced the years of the previous generations and then said at the end that in 2016 Pokemon Sun & Moon will be coming. It was reminiscent of the X & Y reveal in that way. (because it had the big build up going through the generations too)

I feel like it's going to be a continuation of Gen 6 considering there's one animated wire frame scene which looks like Fletchling, but I won't dismiss the possibility of Gen 7 either.

I don't think they'll just throw away the models they created this soon though. I think it's more likely they'll just make minor adjustments and clean up the animations.

Well from the official site itself...

"...the next era of Pokémon games is being announced! Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon are coming out for systems in the Nintendo 3DS family in holiday 2016, with a new world, new Pokémon, and new adventures to discover!"

And since the titles listed in the Direct were all the main pair titles, then yeah this is looking strongly as 7th Gen.

...This made me realize just how...meh X&Y was.

When the other half of the Pokémon will be coming in a later game, doesn't that technically start a new generation by definition?

Anyway, if we take a look at art of the exterior of the Pokémon Center they showed, it's clearly different from those in Kalos, so I'm betting on a new region here.

I initially thought it's going to be a continuation of Gen 6, but considering the tagline "New adventure and new world" it's most likely going to be Gen 7 at this point.

The new PokéCenters make me think this isn't Kalos. Usually all the PokéCenters have the same look in a region, so either they remade all Kalos ones or they made a new region.
