What inspired you to get a certain Pokemon?

I know everyone has a particular reason for catching a certain Pokemon.

But what made you want to catch a particular Pokemon?

Was it like, main characters owning that Pokemon in the anime? Or do you like its stats and/or good attacks? Maybe your favorite Elite Four member, villainous team member or Gym Leader using it? What about its looks and appearance? Or because you like its abilities?

Tell us what made you thought "I have just got to have that Pokemon"

The reason I chose Oshawott as my starter in Black is because I got so obsessed with it after seeing Osha in the anime.

It was Marriland that made me want to catch an Elgyem cos he uses one in his Pokemon White Adventure walkthrough video series.

Elesa inspired me to catch an Emolga.

Fantina inspired me to get a Drifblim.

Dawn from the anime inspired me to get an Ambipom.

Jupiter from Team Galactic inspired me to get Skuntank.

And what made me catch a Manectric was its awesome cry (yes, I like its cry).

I wanted to catch a Gothitelle because I like its appearance. Now I have one myself that is awesome!

The reason I chose Chimchar as my starter in Pearl is because of Ash's Infernape in the anime. I also like monkeys as I was born in the Year of the Monkey.

    Good idea for a thread!

Lets see....there's a few Pokemon that I was inspired to raise. The first being Dragonite because of Lance in the anime and games. And then Clair inspired me to raise a Kingdra because it was so hard to defeat in the games. Cynthia inspired me to raise a Garchomp because it's awesome. And various other trainers inspired me to raise a Bronzong, Charizard, Flygon, and Starmie.

Oh I remember useing 2 hours just to catch a Pikachu because I was a huge Ash fan, I think thats why I choose Charmander as my starter too.

Chose Snivy as my starter on White, due to the anime Snivy, as well as its move-pool. (Mostly because of coil). :p
I spent ages looking for a Dratini, so I could get a awesome Dragonite like Lance.
Most of the other pokemon I use are due to their good looks, or stats, like Conkledur. :)

Um. I catch it because I want to use it? Nothing past that for the most part.

What inspire me to get certain Pokemon are looks and/or competitive viability (like the Water starters, pseudo-legends, Archeops, Excadrill, Haxorus, Gallade, etc.).

I wanted a Sneasel because Kamon had one. (I want to sob at the epicness of Manyula.)
I wanted a Steelix because Hun had one.
I wanted a Mismagius because it always reminded me of Mr. Dark from Rayman.
I wanted a Meowth because I love Meowth from the anime. Have since I was a little kid... I always loved Team Rocket.

The only real reasons I have to catch certain Pokemon is either they're Pokemon I like, I need them to complete my dex or they're shiny (But that's happened like twice in my life). I suppose there's also the fact that they may be holding an item that I want, they may have an ability like pickup that I want to use or a nature I want to breed (That's more a Ditto thing).

I usually catch them because I want to use them. Although, there have been times where I've seen a trainer use a specific Pokemon that I never thought about using, and all of a sudden I'm on a hunt to find that Pokemon.

I catch all of the Pokemon because I have to in order to complete my Pokedex and to max out my trainer card. But the Pokemon that I use in battle are the ones I like.

Because I want to use it in my team... I guess? Normally I look at strategy guides and Bulbapedia and get all sorts of market research before even playing a Pokemon game. For the most part, I have my final team mapped out even before I open the box; it's one of the few advantages of getting the game late, as all the stats information and other qualities of critters have already been disseminated into the mainstream, aiding people like me in assembling their teams.

Persian: I'm a cat person and I like my Pokemon to exude elegance.

Golem (HG/SS only): Highly resistant to most anything Whitney's Miltank can throw at me.

Empoleon: He's a penguin. Made of steel apparently.

Electrode. A ball that goes boom. How can you go wrong?

Flygon: Of all the dragons, I like his looks the best. Having Levitate also comes in handy.

Fantina inspired me to get a Drifblim, Blaine inspired me to get a Rapidash, Gardenia inspired me to get a Cherrim, Aaron inspired me to get a Vespiquen and Wake inspired me to get a Gyarados (all team members of my Platinum game)

When I watched Ash's battle against Burgh in the anime, he inspired me to get a Sewaddle, and evolve it into Leavanny. My Swadloon evolved into Leavanny at L26 (?), and right now it is currently my strongest of my party.

    Wild Pokemon appears!
    That Pokemon looks cool!
    >Bag
    >Pokeballs
    >Pokeball
    >Use
    wonderfulpat throws a Pokeball!
The Wild Pokemon has been caught!

    ...and that's about it

It's mostly the Pokemon Guides / Competitive sites that inspire me to get Pokemon, not really the episodes or movies (there are some exceptions) for some odd reason.

My topmost favorite Pokemon, Lucario, was inspired from - you guessed it, the movie that made its debut: Lucario and the Mystery of Mew. At first I thought he was a real jerk, but then when I saw the ending, I broke down and wanted to get one badly (at first I thought it was just a Pokemon that you could find in wild grass in Pokemon D/P until I found out that you get a Riolu from Riley and evolve it from there).

Manectric and the Torchic family had different stories - when I played my Pokemon Ruby, I picked Torchic as my starter (from watching May pick Torchic). For Manectric, I just wanted a lightning type that could get me ready for beating Winona; little did I know that I'd get attached to it.

I usually catch whatever Pokemon I like, but if I'm watching the anime and I see one of the main characters or a "friend for an episode" use a certain Pokemon that has a personality that stands out to me, I'll usually go ga-ga over it and HAVE to catch one.
Of course, I'm also one of the very many that caught a Caterpie in Yellow/Red/Blue and trained it to a Butterfree because of Ash's, LOL.
I have a Crustle that I caught as a Dweeble. I kinda just wanted one cuz I need a rock type for my team for the time being, but I ended up loving it so much that it's now officially part of my team and my 2nd favorite Unova Pokemon. I even love it even more now that Cilan has one. Oh, Cilan... :D

Um. I catch it because I want to use it? Nothing past that for the most part.

    This one.

Oh and psychics inspired me to always have a psychic type in my team.

Um. I catch it because I want to use it? Nothing past that for the most part.

Same for me, I either catch something because I want to use it, or because I want to use its evolution(s)
