Tyrogue (especially Shiny)

Between the evolved forms, I've always preferred Hitmonchan for its aesthetic. Hitmonlee was a little on the creepy side?

Hitmonchan. Grew to like the design after a while. Also felt interesting by having those elemental punches. Proved ineffective until Generation 4, of course.

Used all three in separate playthroughs.
  • Hitmonchan: Solid in two separate playthroughs, thanks to priority. Rarely ever uses priority moves. Benefitted from newer generation mechanics in both, to be fair, unlike the other two.
  • Hitmonlee: Never saw a lot of action. Blames that on poor coverage and bad match-ups after it joined. Likely performs much better outside of Fire Red.
  • Hitmontop: Terrible in Crystal. Only learns Rolling Kick via Pokemon Stadium 2 move relearner. Picks up High Jump Kick and Mach Punch through egg moves. Leaves Rock Smash (20 power) and Triple Kick at level 49.

Always will be Hitmonchan.

It's because of the TCG. Back when I played it competitively, I ran a Haymaker deck, and Base Set Hitmonchan was my best Pokémon. Any time that card came out to play, the match was pretty much over. One energy for twenty damage? Yes please. And as an extra bit to the story, my fourth copy of that card was found in a parking lot. It's scratched up, but still playable.

Also, the elemental punches in the video games don't hurt. And I prefer the design of Hitmonchan.

I could see Hitmonlee being the clear winner when these Pokémon were first introduced, as the lack of good Fighting type moves made his High Jump Kick super valuable, Hitmonchan lacked good stab and elemental punches were Special, and Hitmontop's moveset had pretty much nothing.

However, I think time really helped Hitmontop, making it eventually a great support/utility Pokémon with access to two amazing Abilities that has its fun tactical niche at least in double battles. Meanwhile its more straightforward and offensively oriented counterparts got outclassed by newer Pokémon that simply have better stats for the job. For example, Sawk and Mienshao can basically do Hitmonchan and Hitmonlee's duties respectively, but with more suitable stats. And if you want a fast and hard-hitting Fighting type in general there are quite a few better options. But Hitmontop's move pool and stats give it a more tactical and defensive style that's more unique among Fighting types.

Hitmontop for me. I used one for the first time in an old playthrough of HeartGold or SoulSilver, don't remember exactly which. It was from the Tyrogue you get from the Karate King in Mt. Mortar. That was the only way to get one of the Hitmons in that game, and then if you wanted to get Hitmontop specifically you had to watch the growth of your Tyrogue to make sure it had perfectly balanced attack and defense.

The entire thing felt like a really cool sidequest that took advantage of the preexisting mechanics of the game, where you had to actually pay attention to the way your Pokemon was growing and train it accordingly, which made it pretty memorable. It made the Pokemon feel unique and special, and the work you had to put in if you wanted to get a specific evolution, especially Hitmontop, made it so you got attached to the guy in the end. It's pretty cool to see something like that even as early as Gen II.

I used that Hitmontop all the way through Kanto and even though I'm pretty sure it never was the strongest in that team, it was almost certainly the most reliable. I still remember the whole experience, it's one of the things I remember the most from that playthrough, so Hitmontop holds a special place in my heart because of this. I've also grown to like it the most in terms of design, it's got that Gen II charm. And I like its playstyle the most out of the three as well. Just an all rounder, balanced, humble support focused Fighting type. Nothing too flashy, but like I said, reliable.

Hitmonlee with that awesome Hi Jump Kick, which I usually equip with Wide Lens if I'm doing a playthrough.
Subsequently, the increase to Rock Slide's accuracy is also appreciated.
It's nice to click a move that instantly KOs those bulky normals nearly all in-game trainers have.
