What anime have secured their place in your "top 5 anime I've ever seen" list as of now? What about them makes them so special for you? List them as well as explain why they're so high on the list over other anime. If possible, rank them as well. You may also list a few anime that are very close but don't quite make it in the top 5 for you. :D

Whatever, just make it a fun thread guys. Feel free to comment on others' lists and discuss the anime in them/what makes them so great. Although refrain from "you have ♥♥♥♥♥♥ taste" comments. Those don't help to steer the thread in the right direction. At all. Post away!

Oh, and feel free to include your top 5 manga list as well if you want. That's all. :D

    Hmm...

    1. Eureka Seven - basically one of the first anime that I have ever seen that got me attracted to the whole field. Plus, those feels near the end q.q

    2. Dragon Ball Z - The top shounen anime that also got me hooked into the field. This was a childhood show for me, although at the time, I didn't think it was an anime.

    2. Hunter x Hunter (2011) - This series actually expands on the manga, which made me thrilled that this anime is still airing. Plus it's one of the best shounen anime with a little hint of seinin. To me, this series is tied with DBZ.

    4. Log Horizon - A top anime about a video game reality. I honestly find this anime better than SAO. Plus, it put me into the world itself, and I really wanted to be a part of that world.

    4. Phi Brain: Puzzle of God - This anime made me interested in puzzles. Plus the characters are awesome, with the protagonist facing off a lot of puzzles, as well as having plenty of rivals. This is tied for my 4th spot, which is a tough call.

A lot of short anime series were close, but the closest one is Poyopoyo Kansatsu Nikki.

Not a specific order. I've seen a several of these bashed so here goes 8D

    1. Fairy Tail ~ I know there are plenty of flaws with this series, but I really love the world that its set in, and the different magic types and guilds. They're all one big happy family :) I love a lot of the characters in this series. It just seems like it would be a fun place to live in, y know?

    2. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann ~ There isn't really much to say besides... epic. I like most of the characters and the fights and how they still managed to take everything to the next level after you thought they already did the most they could, haha. I really liked what happened after the timeskip and I thought the dynamic between Simon and everyone else was great. :3

    3. K-On! ~ I thought this show was pretty funny, actually. I laughed out loud on a couple of occasions :3 I think the girls are really fun and their shenanigans entertaining to watch.

    4. Clannad: After Story ~ I am just really glad I was able to get through the first season and on to the second. The main 2 are very cute together and I thought it was nice how this show was able to portray a romance and the most the two ever did was hold hands like 3 times or cuddle once onscreen.

    5. Madoka Magica ~ you know, i wasn't really sure what to put here, so I just decided to go with this one. I like how it turned out into something I didn't expect it to, and I am a real sucker for plot twists like ones in here.

probably a pretty cliche list but whatever!!

    1) Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei
Because... it's Mahouka. Like... I can't explain it. The anime is actually bad but... it's Mahouka

    2) Tsubasa Chronicles
My all time favorite before Mahouka fandom started. I fell in love with the story and characters.

    3) Code Geass
    Lelouch!

    4) Death Note
    Light!

    5) Persona 4
    Because... Persona.

    1) Suite Precure - There are a lot of seasons with different cures, but this is the one I like most. The plot was great imho.
    2) Shinryaku! Ika Musume - Nothing much to say about it, seriously. Great characters.
    3) Tantei Opera Milky Holmes - I just love the Team-Rocket-like villains. Plus Twenty's probably the best character there.
    4) Inferno cop - It's just the kind of stuff that I never expected to watch.
    5) Ranma 1/2 - Childhood animu. Still one of my top 5

    1. Steins;Gate - Can't really get any better than this.
    2. Angel Beats! - This, either.
    3. Durarara!! - Gets really High-IQ in the second half.
    4. Bakemonogatari - Good stuff.
    5. Toss-up between:
Guilty Crown - Guilty Crown isn't really that good by itself, it's just the perpetual feels that come afterwards :x
Log Horizon - Art is just decent, but the plot is amazing.
    Railgun - So much Ruiko
Zetsuen no Tempest - Some of the best dialogues ever.
Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo - Was 24 episodes, felt like 48, because there was so much story.
Strike the Blood - No senpai, this is our fight!

    1. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
    2. K-On!
    3. Durarara!!
    4. Hetalia series
    5. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

I absolutely loved TMoHS and Hetalia. Hetalia was so cute and literally hilarious. Italy, England and America are my most favorites of all. <3 The list isn't in order by most favorite, but it's definitely the top five I would choose out of all the anime I have seen. Also, Gurren Lagann is there because the english VA for Kamina is a big teddy bear. I met him once, and it was my birthday at the convention, so he had birthday cake with me. <3

I had to scan through my whole list to figure out my top 5. But it was kind of hard to choose, so I'll go with the judgement on which series struck an impression on me when I first watched it.

So, after ignoring anything that is made to be sad (otherwise, my top 5 will consist nothing but those), here's my top anime list in no particular order... Sorry, I'm never great when it comes to ranking my favorites, so bear with it.

    - Stein's;Gate
This series main focus is about time travelling and the risks that comes with it, which I don't even know before I started watching it. It has a really interesting concept, and actually focused on time travelling itself instead of handwaving it for the plot.

    - Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica
Should I say more about this? I don't normally watch Mahou Shoujo series, but this series made everything so amazingly twisted that it still give me the chills.

    - No Game No Life
Okay, before anyone questions, I have been impressed since episode 3's chess game. The first two episodes has only been world building in order to familiarize ourselves with the world, not containing the actual fun of the series: the games.

Simply inserting a bit of magic made the most common of games into something out of this world. Moreover, the fact that our protagonists willing to risk anything to get what they want is good that it is scary in some way.

    - Log Horizon
I regretted not watching it when it first aired, 'cause this series is so full of love from me. It's not just any typical trapped in an MMO concept, but it focused on the world, and all those politics. The interactions between the players and the NPCs is important in the series, unlike the other series with the same concept.

    Plus, Shiroe-sama~

    - Kill la Kill
Maybe this is just popcorn material, but other than story (which, by the way, took a drastic turn at the middle), the action scenes managed to get my adrenaline pumping.

Plus, never have I seen a series that made me hate the villains so much.

By the way, Ano Hana, Angel Beats, CLANNAD, and maybe majority of the one shot movies I have watched, before anyone questions what I don't want to include. Isshukan Friends will wait 'til the last episode before it may go to my sad list.

...y'know, I'll jot down my top 5 manga someday.

I can give you a top 4, that last spot could be any one of 50 plus shows depending on my mood.

1 - Revolutionary Girl Utena - Perfect example of phenomenal direction making up for lack of budget.
2 - Kiki's Delivery Service - Beautiful to look at and makes me feel happy inside.
3 - Galaxy Express 999 - Lots of flaws but it has what I can only call a special aura.
4 - Ginga Hyouryuu Vifam - Fantastic cast of characters, impressive because most of them are children.

Probably going to get hated on for one of these choices...But screw it. It's my list, not yours :c

    Mawaru Penguindrum
Beautiful, but depressing series that was heart-wrenching from the start. Had me emotionally attached the entire way through, and the soundtrack did not enlighten the ambience in any way, shape, or form either. It had a different art style than what I was used to, but it was still attractive, and appealing enough to keep my attention in the series.

    Elfen Lied
Heard many times that people have not liked this series because of the plot, or unnecessary/excessive nudity and/or gore. Regardless of the reason, I personally loved this series, and have watched it numerous times. There was something about the emotional connection that was created between myself as the audience, and Lucy (wasn't all that fond of Nyuu, to be honest). The whole idea of humanity potentially becoming extinct, and what-not, the hints of romance, along with a depressing plot surrounding the "alien" species, it made for an enjoyable anime to watch multiple times over. It was quite thought provoking in the sense that it questioned my relative faith in humanity even though it is fictional.

    PSYCHO-PASS
Another series that had me questioning justice and humanity by the time the series finished airing. Not only did it have a great cast as voice actors/actresses, the build-up throughout the anime kept me interested the entire way, and that's something that not a lot of series has been able to do; my lack of attention span has caused me to drop a generous amount of decent series ;; Although the animation quality was at times questionable, it was easily overlooked by the plot.

    Mirai Nikki
Was an interesting to say the least...Slightly confusing at some points because of certain elements, but nonetheless was an entertaining series filled with confusion, mystery, a psychotic character, all wrapped nicely into a decent series. Not to mention that I've always found the idea of time travel/parallel worlds always intriguing, and always appreciate when that has been used in manga, anime, or video games.

    Hotarubi no Mori e
Not entirely sure if movies count, but this particular one will leave a mark. Another emotional one. The main character has a striking resemblance to the protagonist in Natsume Yuujinchou, but regardless of the similarities in physical appearance, it was different in that it was more romance based. Like the ones previously mentioned, I love being able to emotionally connect with characters at some level, and this one tugged on the heartstrings. Must-watch!

    1. Higoroshi no Naku Koro ni (and Kai)

This anime is pretty much the top of its genre and for good reason. The chilling atmosphere of Hinamizawa at night, the background noise of the cicadas chirping at the extremely well executed horror and gore scenes. The intricate story line, amazing characters and unique premise only propel an already great anime to even greater heights. This is without a doubt my favourite anime of all time.

    2. Kokoro Connect
The characters, the premise and the feelz. These three integral aspects of what is possibly one of the most unique anime I have ever seen are pulled of exceptionally well. The funny moments made me laugh hysterically and the sad moments made me wish you could hug a fictional character.

This anime's truly strongest point though is its characters. Each of them has a surprising amount of depth given to them (except maybe Aoki but he is still developed and interesting) considering the small number of episodes compared to most live action dramas and each have interesting and well thought out strengths and flaws. The characters are relatable, the voice acting fits them perfectly and each character adds an amazing element to an already intriguing premise.

    3. Death Note
L and Light (N to a degree) are some of the most interesting characters I have seen. This anime has the most complex plot, good characters and a very interesting premise but it is the suspense incorporated into the complex plot that make it amazing. I was always itching to see who would come out on top and how they would do it.

    4. Elfen Lied
Honestly, if the gore and nudity bother you that's fine but I find it hard to believe people don't acknowledge this as a master piece. The story is both touching and horrific and it is certainly captivating with a unique premise serving as the centre piece for everything.. and then there is Lilium. Oh my God Lilium . (May contain nudity, I didn't check. Watch at own risk.)

    5. Puella Magi Madoka Magica
In the end this had to be the fifth spot. I love how it appears as though it will be one thing at first and turns out to be such a twisted and sad story. The artwork - especially on the witches - is amazing and the plot twists and over all story kept me begging for more.

This is a pretty rough list, my top five are definitely these anime but the order tends to change.

    Honourable mentions

Naruto Shippeden - It's a shounen anime, and those are not typically known for having complex plots or backstories nor good characters but this is not the case here. Naruto Shippuden has great action sequences, really knows how to push those emotional moments (although not always to the levels of some of the above anime), has a really developed story and has some truly fantastic characters such Shikamaru, Hinata, Itatchi, Jiraiya or even the main man himself.

Azumanga Daioh - It's just so funny. I used to think I would never watch a slice of life an anime and I am not entirely sure how I ended up watching this but I'm glad that I did. There's pretty much no plot, which is typical of the genre, but the characters are amazing and when things are funny, hey truly do make you laugh. Osaka is probably the most amusing character ever.

Not in any particular order, I guess. I'll put a manga list as well. Do note that both lists are somewhat rough, and are subject to any change.

    Anime:

    1. Love Live! School Idol Project. (S1/S2)
    - Yes. That's right. I actually praise an idol anime to be one of my favourite of all time. I absolutely loved the first season, and although the second season may not be over, I'm having a fantastic time with it.

Funny enough, I was actually going to brush this series off when I first saw it, but I gave it a chance and it just sucked me in. It's a story about girls trying to be school idols alongside their antics. Simple premise, but it's the characters that really stuck with me. Almost all of the characters are all likeable and differentiable from one another, which makes it rather easy to have a favourite amongst them. In my case Maki, Umi, and Eli.

    2. Gintama - I actually watched the first fifty episodes waaaaay back, but completely forgot about it, haha. It wasn't until earlier this year that I sat down and gave it a serious watch. In return, I got an incredibly hilarious series that had me crying in my chair, filled with tears of feels, and on the edge of my seats during fights. Never before have I watched a series like that. That is until Gintama came along.

    3. AnoHana - THE FEELS. THE FEELS. THEY WERE TOO STROOOOOOOONG.

    4. Seitokai no Ichizon (First season only. Second season was meh.) - The antics of a student council and a man who desires a harem? That's a concept that I can get on board with. I'm sure that it's my bias that's acting up, but aside from Gintama and this series. I have never laughed so hard in watching an anime. Aside from comedy, the strong character interactions was another element that had me strongly gravitating to this anime.

    5. Fate/Zero - Big fan of TYPE-Moon's work, so strong feelings of bias are lurking with this choice. I'm not the biggest fan of Urobutchers work, but I believe he did a fantastic job with Fate/Zero. Heck, Fate/Zero was probably Urobutchers' happy wonderland when he was writing the light novels. A story where everyone basically suffers and dies, including the main character? Sounds right up his alley.

Anyways, I loved Fate/Zero. It has a vastly different tone than Fate/stay night, and that's what had originally attracted me. It was a rather gritty and dark take on the Holy Grail War, instead of Shirou spouting his flowery ideals to everyone. That and Ufotable did a fantastic job with this series. The anime adaptation was not lacking in any department (except for not using Emiya -time alter- anywhere in the series). The OST was fantastic, the visuals were great, and the choices for a lot of the voice actors was perfection.

    Manga:

    1. Mahou Sensei Negima - This was my teenage years of manga. Negima does hold a special place in my heart and I will probably will always call it my favourite manga of all time, haha. Even with an abundance of glaring plot holes and such, I had a great time with this series. I actually teared up slightly when this series finally ended, lol. Makes me slightly glad that it sort-of continues on in UQ Holder. Also, the Negi vs Rakan fight was the definition of epic. Even with all of the ass pulling, it was still entertaining.

    2. Iris Zero - Supernatural powers in a high school setting. And it's not battle?! Although, not finished and only having thirty three chapters available, I can confidently say that it's leaps and bounds in comparison to other manga that I've read. We have likable characters all around, especially a fantastic protagonist. A setting and concept that isn't wasted. And some rather interesting story arcs to go to boot.

    3. Arpeggio of Blue Steel - Ships. Battles. Battleships. And Takao.

    4. Cross Game - I'm a sucker for good slice-of-lifes and Cross Game was easily one of the best I have ever read. At first, I wasn't intrigued by it's simple concept and usage of baseball. But, boy was I ever wrong. Reading only ten chapters had me easily sucked in. I was pretty bummed out when I finally reached the end of the series, as it was rather hard to let go of it.

    5. Three way tie between Bakuman, Sora no Otoshimono, and TWGOK.

    1. Dragon Ball/Z
Probably one of the first anime I had ever seen. I've loved it forever, very good shounen. In my opinion the only good shounen/action/adventure anime I've ever seen. I feel it connected with me on all levels, like I could really enjoy all the characters unlike some anime where you hate some and love others whilst with this one I love everyone, villains, heroes etc.

    2. Akira
This would be one of the first cartoon films I ever saw. When I say cartoon I was only like 6 when I first saw this and it is one of the first animated movies I had ever seen. This movie blew my mind as a kid I mean, it was seriously f****d up. So much blood so much yelling and screaming and loud noises but now when I rewatch this I am blown away by the plot and just amazed at the characters and the development they go through. My favorite seinen ever is this.

    3. Mobile Suit Gundam
I grew up on this series, I mean I lived off the real robot genre, that genre is probably up there in my favorites (Seinen, Crime Mystery stuff, Slice of Life, Comedy) and that show was pretty heavy on character deaths like the whole series of gundam doesnt just send our little Char Aznable and Amuro into the shadow realm. It kills them...

    4. Digimon Adventure 01
I grew up on this as well. I was a pretty hardcore Digimon fan and I still am, I remember Digimon was for the cool kids because it wasn't so well known in kindergarten and stuff so we'd have these madass lunch boxes with these dinosaurs with lazer canons printed on them and all the other kids'd have pokemon stuff.

    5. Grave of the Fireflies
This one could possibly take over my number 1 spot but its not my favorite per say. I remember watching this movie thinking, hells yeah ghibli lets see you top off Laputa and Porco Rosso (yes those are my favorite ghibli films). But instead I was hit with something so emotionally breaking that I was in tears at the end of the movie. You see I was able to put myself in a position that the protagonist was in with his little sister and I had been in a position a little like that one except with no war and such but yeah. There was something about that movie that makes me so angry, upset, sad and depressed but I don't know what it is. It's based on a mans autobiography who is apologizing for the death of his sister due to malnutrition and its just an experience that I will never forget.

Would I really leave it on a sad note onto MANGA!

    1. Donyatsu
I love this manga for its weird comedy it's weird plot its weird everything but most importantly its a fun read where you can feel just cheerful reading it. yeah Dohnut Cats are my gulty pleasure

    2. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure
Hands down one of the best manga I have ever read. It's not necessarily shounen where as it's not exactly seinen sometimes there's a fine line between the two where the manga seems to float around. Yes the story is fairly shounen but the way its portrayed with some harsh death scenes i.e. Death 13 trying to kill kakyoin but he dodges and instead impales the dogs head. Its very graphic and the language they use is fairly heavy but the comedy is probably what keeps it on the shounen side of things.

    3. 666 Satan
This manga is done by the guy who makes Naruto's twin brother, so yeah before you go accusing this guy of plagiarism they are both twins and their influences come from the same people. I loved this manga I really enjoyed the serious yet cheerful plot even when things got heavy. A very good read but its english censorship fail is one you should know. It was changed to "O-Parts hunter" because satan is evil... lock up ur kids the pokamans after u

    4. Monster Hunter: Orage
Monster Hunter manga by the dude who does Fairy tail, it's pretty good I liked it heaps and it is really deserving of a continuation or anime.

    5. Dragon Quest: Dai no Daibōken
A manga based on well nothing that I've seen in any Dragon Quest game prbably the monsters universe but a very good read with it being original and all.

    hmm...
Yu yu Hakusho- It was my childhood chocolate, I still like to watch it now when all the other series get boring...
Naruto- I have a naruto addiction, sue me...I'm not even sure why I still like it, maybe I should move on...I just know I fell in love when I first saw it.
Full moon wo Saga♥♥♥♥e- A favourite from back when I was still into shoujo, a very touching animation.
Princess tutu-amazing story, it actually changed me into a lover of ballet.
i had a hard time remembering a final one so I decided to put my recent favourite:
Mawaru Peguindrum-Hauntingly beautiful, keeps you on the edge of your seat, I love it!
As for manga those favs are set in stone!
Hikaru no go- I love this manga so much!
Naruto- i adored its zero chapter.
Beck & Piano no Mori- hands down some the best mangas I've ever read these two..
Pygamalio- I'm a sucker for old mangas, this one is a work of art to me.
Baka to gogh- more on the mature side(if you can call these guys mature) but an underdog fav for me....
Man I really can't decide, I've got a fav for each genre so its practically impossible to narrow it down to five much less pick one!
