What do you want to do for a career? What did/are/going/whatever you study for?

I want to become a teacher, but I'm still not sure. Today I was talking to one of the school deans and he was saying he never regrets choosing this career path, but at the same time, sort of warned about the pay. I live in Florida and Florida pays teachers one of the lowest salaries in the country, if not the lowest. He also said that there are a lot of students becoming teachers that I would have to compete with as a job. Im kind of split: I love teaching, but at the same time I dont want to waste my time at college. Advice welcome lol.

Ah, Florida. I've been told by my own teachers that the pay isn't... The best. Although no doubt they love what they do. At one point I was also dabbling with the idea of being a college professor, but that dream was fleeting. Instead I've been studying the medical field for various reasons.

However. At this point in time, I'm pausing my college progress to focus on getting a hold of my newfound family life. As a result my goals drastically changed, and practically I've allowed myself to be more open with the career choices I could partake. One such could be a Pharmacy Technician. Or Medical Coder. Father has some good connections and could slide me into a good paying job as an assistant secretary of sorts at his current place of employment.

Unfortunately as for my desired career, I've never pursued. I don't regret it, otherwise I wouldn't be where I stand today (and I can't complain), yet there are nights I'm left wondering on "what-ifs."

I honestly have no idea. At first it was a nurse from a push by my parents, but that was way too competitive and tough so I backed out early. Then I went with graphic design/art since I could do that fairly well. Never could find a job though, most open positions require experience and I gave up and moved onto other things. Right now I work in higher education since that's where life took me. But come July I'm moving to another country 15 hours away by plane so things will change drastically... I'll see what my career ends up becoming by then. If I could go back on my degree at this point though, I'd definitely go into one of the engineering fields! Very good and in-demand positions that I wish I realized existed sooner.

For a while, I wanted to be a clinical psychologist as I'm passionate about helping people and mental health. However, recently I changed my mind and decided I'd rather have a career related to law. It's kind of unexpected because I always thought law was a "boring" career when I was younger but after learning a lot more about it at school, its opened my mind to how interesting it actually is. It wouldn't be an easy career to pursue but I think I'll still go for it regardless. I don't think I would want to go into criminal law though, so I'm trying to see what other options there are that relate to law.

I still have time to figure out what I want to do though so that answer might change but yup, law seems to be what I'm looking at right now. :D

I've basically always wanted to become a novel author and saw studies as just something I had to do to get a well paid job. Well, now I have a decenty paid job. And I'm realizing that I'm actually interested in what I'm doing after all. So maybe I wouldn't mind staying in academia and spend my life researching... difficult as it may be to find funds and time sometimes, and competitive as psyduck if you want to get them cool papers, I've also gotten a strange sense of freedom since starting my PhD position, like I know that what I'm doing and working on is actually for my sake instead of some customer, because I'm interested and both want to help myself and humanity. It's pretty cool. So I guess I do want to become Doctor Rika one day after all :)

Also I want to be borderline underweight and super cute in hipster clothing. x

Keep in mind that the average person changes career paths 5 times in their life, so what you choose to do might not be for life.
I always wanted to work with wildlife and I already work in the industry, but I don't know if I will go any further than I am right now. There's nowhere else for me to go unless I move far away.

I've recently become interested more in computers and such. I'm not too sure yet, but maybe something in programming or web development? I've also thought about something in medicine, such as pharmacy, but I'm thinking that might be too much of a long goal for me to pursue.

i'm currently studying veterinary bioscience in uni hoping to become a vet. ideally, I'd like to specialise in native wildlife and exotics (I live in Aus) with a particular interest in veterinary toxicology and animal interactions.

When I was in college I would have said a fantasy and children's lit author without hesitation. Now I am not so sure. My life has become much darker since then. My parents split up and my mother was run over by a truck driver. She's disabled now, and in a lot of pain. I love her and do my best to stay by her side. I am staying in a town that I hate because I won't leave her like this. I'm also resigned that I may have to stay in retail hell just to have enough money to survive and help support my loved ones. A part of me wants to sail away and travel to exciting foreign lands, write tales of great adventures and fall in love, but I don't think that is probably going to happen. But in the meantime in between selling bath products, writing essays and reviews for a few extra dollars on the side, cooking and looking out for my mom somewhere down the road I might get some creative writing and illustrations done and fulfill my dream after all, if not at least I'll have the adventures in my mind. That's the nice thing about writing.

My life goal is essentially to do cool things that matter.

I'm in corporate atm but only want to stay max 3 years to learn how corporate works and essentially how to sustainably make a profit.

Afterwards I want to start my own social enterprise or work in non-profits. If working for another non-profit I've found I love marketing and people/coaching so would be most interested in those two fields. Though I'm particularly interested in starting my own thing because I love being able to shape direction and look at the big picture of things, which you can't really do as a smaller cog in a bigger machine.

When I have life experience (say when I'm like 50) I'd like to head into education, and be the cool English teacher (I have a literature degree) who doesn't just teach people about books, but about the world.

Beware about some non-profits- not all are here because they're good. Take for instance a (let's call them a mini school) place I went to to learn some programming. They were so strict under the conditions that if you didn't complete all projects before the end of each section you would be removed and they weren't kidding.

I refused to turn in garbage and wanted to make something grand, but ended up running out of time and got kicked out while they left majority of the tab for the school really high on me. The only reason I went in the first place was to focus on programming to learn because I have a learning disability which is where public school failed for me. In short, make sure the non-profits you look at in the future DO good things- the surface isn't the only spot to look at...

As far as what I would like to do as a career.. Maybe a Programmer or scientist that works with a team/group of other bright people trying to expand our knowledge about the earth/ecosystem/etc to prevent disasters and better locate illegal activities that may cause problems for a lot of people/earth such as dumping nuclear waste into the ocean (being an extreme) to ensuring the waters from which we drink is clean/pure or at least could be brought into a higher safe purity if needed.

Later on I want to help lead a new community to be autonomous to any other nation (not kidding here) that implements a gift economy and is self-sustaining like what the Native Americans had before they were wiped out. I don't see a need for money or accumulating it. Money is just a form of control that everyone is apparently allowed to collect. All it does in short is increase influence(power). The gift economy is based on social influence/power that is earned by contributing the most to the community/society. To me that is true power because it is earned more fairly than how people in the world gain it through their currencies. It's not communism or capitalism. It's just a system without the smoke and mirrors that say what you own represents how great you are like what we have nearly everywhere else.

I really want to be an author, but if it doesn't look like it's going to work out in about 5 years time then I'll go to school so I can be a band director.

          I did science/engineering at university.

As for a career though, it's not so much about what you want to do - that's the easy part, it's more about who wants to employ you.

Used to want to be a teacher, but I'd have to get a degree in something I probably wouldn't want to study. Then I turned to art, and I might go into graphic design (missed out on the chance to join the graphic design program at my school, but then I'd also have to do a ton of things I didn't want to do), or study psychology. idk

I currently work as a analyst and consultant to a cybersecurity firm.

While my current job is great and my colleagues are all amazing people, I sometimes wonder if I could do some consultancy work on my own? It's probably something I'd like to try once I have enough experience and financial freedom to pursue running my own little business. That said, for my immediate future, I would like to have opportunities to be rotated to different departments to learn and improve myself as much as I can!
