I admit I tried this a few times as a kid. Was curious if it'd ever work/if I had to clear certain story conditions to be able to evolve it lol. Did you ever make any attempts, and were you disappointed when you learned it couldn't evolve at all?

Played too long ago to say for sure. (Knew about it when coming back many years later, however.) Probably tried and was disappointed. Who says you have to follow the anime so precisely? Could have made a nice Raichu sprite too.

I'm pretty sure I tried way back when I first played it as a kid. Can't remember what I thought about it though

I didn't bother trying to evolve my Pikachu as a kid because of the anime nostalgia factor. I thought Raichu was a jerk cuz of that one anime short (the one before the first movie if I recall), but now, Raichu is one of my favorites. I also really doubt I knew how to evolve Pokemon with stones, though I doubt I had any Pokemon like that on my team at the time. I might have had a Kadabra since I was never able to catch one in Sapphire as a kid, but I don't remember.

Please note this was around the time Black & White had come out (when I was in middle school) because when I first got the games, I was barely able to play Pokemon due to my poor reading ability at the time, hence I almost certainly never made it past Brock in Yellow.

Tried and succeeded. Though, we did that by trading it to Blue, evolving it and then trading it back. It was quite a shock when it turned out that Raichu doesn't follow you like Pikachu did. ^^"

I tried like several times. When the game said that pikachu refused to evolve I thought that maybe I had to max out its friendship so I would later try again. On my most recent playthrough years after I first played yellow I thought to try this again. Out of curiosity I tried to see what happens if I used a thunder stone after beating the elite four, and sadly that didn't work either. In all attempts I was disappointed each time.

Same, though more disappointed than shocked.

I also had Surf hacked onto Pika for the mini-game but couldn't play it as Raichu. It was neat to see Raichu still having a unique surfing animation in Stadium though.

I echo this. It's been almost 25 years (holy shit), but I have vague memories of trying and wondering what the Raichu would look like following me.
As much as I love Pikachu, I love Raichu as well, so I was probably disappointed but didn't hate it.

I think I was too scared to try this out of fear that I would break the game or my Pikachu would reject me 😅
