Actually that image came from a blog pic of a show dog and the facial expression was too funny, so people started to use the amused look on the dog's face to convey surprised feelings and thus doge came to be.

And the name 'doge' was a typo of dog at the time that caught on.

I wonder when this meme even got started? Haven't seen it at all until late August - early September, so I'm guessing it should be sometime around then? o:
 
I agree, it was funny at first, but now like every other meme its just annoying as heck.
