Appearance:
Maira, standing at 5'4" and weighing 93 lbs, isn't the prettiest girl around with the way her jagged bones jut out from under her dry, pale skin, and the way her long and wispy mud-colored hair seems to go everywhere. However, the part of her that's caused her the most stress has been the massive brown birthmark splotched over the left side of her face, covering most of her cheek and even around her eye a bit.
Her wardrobe is modest, consisting of plain dresses and long skirts with long sleeved blouses. She tends to stick to solid color clothing, usually in cool colors. Her feet are usually adorned with a pair of navy blue sneakers, and she doesn't wear any accessories or jewelry.
Personality:
Maira's struggle is one that is shared by an unfortunate many people. A lonely person who wants acceptance but fears rejection or betrayal, and so remains alone. She tries to remain distant, only speaking when spoken to and avoiding eye contact. Having dealt with petty insults for much of her life, Maira has grown rather thick skinned, so it can be difficult to pull any meaningful reaction from her, positive or negative.
Even ignoring from her efforts to repel people, she isn't a very good conversationalist, finding it difficult to figure out what to say. She doesn't have any real hobbies unless people-watching and daydreaming count, nor does she pay attention to any of the latest, hippest happenings. This makes her rather unappealing company.
At her core Maira is a kind and gentle girl with a good sense of right and wrong. However, she has a history of putting her "friends" over everything, casting aside her beliefs and doing whatever she can to please them if they so desire.
History:
Given up at two months old, Maira never knew her true parents and lived in an orphanage for most of her life. It was a lonely life, growing up knowing she was there because she'd been unwanted by her parents. Fellow children offered no comfort, as the massive birthmark on her face made her the target of frequent bullying. Those who could see past that were deterred by her quiet, boring disposition. Her caretakers offered little more than empty smiles as they scurried about to deal with the million other things going on, always being another mess to clean, or another crying child to calm down. There was no catching them when they were finished as they always went straight home the moment their shifts were up. It was just a job to them, after all.
After 10 whole years of this, it was no wonder Maira would do anything for the first person to accept her. She became close with a troublemaker by the name of Maya Devi, a violent, older girl who was feared within the orphanage despite her small frame. The two got into a lot of trouble together, be it shoplifting, fighting, or eventually selling drugs. Maira soon realized that Maya only really wanted an accomplice, but she didn't care. As long as she didn't have to be alone anymore, that was enough for her.
This didn't change when Maya left the orphanage at age 18. In fact, without having her caretakers breathing down her back, Maya's crimes worsened, and Maira was dragged right along with it all. One night, this happened to mean armed robbery. Maya had gotten her hands on a weapon and was eager to use it, so she dragged Maira to a gas station in the dead of night and robbed it. Or rather, tried to.
Maira was grabbing the money while Maya held the man behind the counter at gunpoint when the two were set upon by a heroic passerby. The confrontation didn't end well for the girls, but Maya was able to get away, leaving the then 12-year-old Maira at the law's mercy. She was arrested and sentenced to five years in prison as an accessory to armed robbery. Maya was never found.
She was recently released on probation, required to attend counseling and relocated to Simmonds School of Rebirth.
