Question to all the readers:

When you read a gazillion novels, do you remember every bits & pieces of the novel if said, a year later?

I have not read a book since senior year, to be completely honest. I do read news, if that counts.
I normally judge someone in my mind pretty hard when someone says to me they don't read (I know it's not the same as what you said, but it bring it to mind). But for some reason, if its someone on a forum specifically (meaning if someone says it on Facebook or Twitter, this doesn't happen), I tend to not judge them. I think there's something about this form of communication that invalidates any claims to not reading, because our entire communication system is based on reading. I know it's not the same thing as reading a book, but its just something that happens.

Definitely not every detail. I tend to be a speed reader. I skim for what I find important/relevant to the story and skip over some of the smaller details. However, I usually do remember the bits that I do read for a long time, especially if it really sticks out (and it doesn't have to be a main plot point, perhaps just something I found funny or odd).

However, reading FanFiction definitely messes with the details I rememebr. My memory of the Harry Potter books has been completely distorted by years of reading FanFiction. I haven't read the original, canon novels in a long time, so I'd probably mix up details from FanFics I've read recently :P

Oh, FanFiction, the bane of my existence. xD

But I'd have to agree, as I normally find myself forgetting things I've read after some time. I like to think it's because I have a bad memory, though. I'll remember the important parts, but I might forget how the events led up to the climax or something like that. Or I'll forget the important parts and remember some really obscure detail. Yep, my mind's weird.

I used to have a problem where I'd read a whole page and remember none of it, so I'd have to read it again. Luckily now I am able to focus a bit better so I don't do that xD I try not to zone out while reading.

Ugh, I hate it when that happens. My focus is still terrible. Sometimes when my focus is good I still have to read and re-read and digest. So much effort for just a page...

Now imagine it's a song of ice and fire and you do this multiple times. You learn not to do it anymore xD

Oh God, reading. I don't like reading out of ny own accord, but when it's for an assignment or whatever I truly dig in. :3

I once read this story in a collection of short stories about a village that held an annual "lottery" to decide on someone to stone to death every 27th of June. Called it "population control". :<

Oh, The Lottery? People were so offended about that when it came out, when it was just telling us a truth about human nature haha.

Oh, you were alive and literate in 1948?

Good on you. :D

Unless I particularly enjoy the story, I don't really remember every detail about it. There are some books that I've read where some parts just stick with me no matter how much time passes since I've read it.

Then there are the books that I've read several times over that it's like I know every word in the book.

When I do read, there are times when I'm kind of tired or my mind tends to wander, so I miss scenes. I go back to reread what I missed. Usually, I'm focused on the book. I don't have time to reread right now, given that I want to finish reading seven books this month.

I get lost so easily when I read. My mind just struggles so much with concentrating on one thing for an extended time. I often forget scenes or space out when I read them entirely, so that's why I get lost. I usually have to go back and re-read the scenes in order for me to follow the story. Never have I had such a mixed feeling of love and hatred for another thing than reading.

Most of the time when I start a chapter of a book I just skim through it quickly then I go back and begin to read.. though it's really easy for me to lose my focus while reading, just like Mac said.. so I'd often have to go back and reread the page just to prevent me from forgetting any major details.

Also, I'm also one who only remembers things from a book if I had thought it was good.. otherwise, if I thought a story was bad, I wouldn't be able to remember it at all.

Sometimes when I'm reading, I would have to go back and reread a page maybe two or three times because my mind ends up drifting elsewhere midway. Or, I'll find myself reading the same few sentences repeatedly because I lost focus. It doesn't matter if the book is really good or outside of my interest, I'll just wander off to an intruding thought at times.

Reading on a computer often just reinforces the fact that I can lose my focus easily.. because whenever I try to read passages online, I'll just want to have the tendency to go online to other sites **cough** PC **cough** and just browse around on there. But that's only at home pretty much. Other than that, I'll be fine with reading on a computer at school. Guess it just depends on the environment I'm in haha

But this will be a challenge for me when I do start school next month, as 2 of my 5 classes will be online through Blackboard.
